Would you eat fish pie mix 1 day out of date?

Sorry, posted for traffic!

Bought fish pie mix a few days ago, put it in fridge and just pulled it out to make a fish pie and it's use by yesterday's date!

Do I use it or bin it? Paranoid as I'm feeding it to my 14 month old as well as me and DH!

Yes

Superstar22 · 25/07/2024 15:22

Yes

rubyslippers · 25/07/2024 15:22

Yes I would
smell it - you’ll tell if it’s off

Ineffable23 · 25/07/2024 15:22

As long as I had cooked it thoroughly I would, assuming it looked and smelt okay.

TheSingingBean · 25/07/2024 15:23

I would, I'm pretty relaxed about dates as long as the food actually looks and smells ok.

Dearg · 25/07/2024 15:24

I would go by smell. If it stinks, I would bin it.

Bjorkdidit · 25/07/2024 15:24

Yes, if it smells and looks OK, which I'd expect it would do as long as your fridge is the correct temperature.

I buy quite a lot of yellow sticker stuff, so regularly eat things a day out of date. Never found anything to be off.

Let's hope this thread is free of the 'no I wouldn't' people and for once no-one is throwing away food that is perfectly safe to eat.

Sisterdeloris · 25/07/2024 15:25

Doesnt fish smell bad even at the best of times?! Haha but yeah to quote my gran, there was no such thing as sell by in my day, you just sniffed stuff!

elm26 · 25/07/2024 15:34

Thanks everyone it just smells like it usually does, it's smoked haddock, salmon and cod mix so it smells fishy anyway, it looks fine and doesn't smell any different to what it usually does and it's DD's favourite dinner with peas so I'll take a chance!

Yeah probably but I'd give myself a tummy ache worrying that I'd get a tummy ache haha

muddyford · 25/07/2024 15:42

Yes, I would. You are cooking it.

roughride24 · 25/07/2024 15:42

If it smelt ok then yes. I've opened fish a day out before and was instantly aware it was off so I think you'd notice. Also just check if it feels slimy at all, that's usually a good giveaway.

DaggerIsle · 25/07/2024 15:44

Just to check- if it smells okay in package them 95% chance it's fine.
Worse case scenario you might suddenly get the off smell as fish is cooking.

Mental how people survived before food was wrapped in plastic with a date on it, isn't it?

Kitkat1523 · 25/07/2024 22:59

Yes

StripedPiggy · 25/07/2024 23:05

As long as it looks & smells normal, yes.

I have been ignoring ‘use by’ dates & applying common sense instead for decades. BUT I always make sure my fridge temperature is < 4C. Still alive, last time I checked.

Mental how people survived before food was wrapped in plastic with a date on it, isn't it?

Also mental how often this sort of question comes up on here.

What's changed and when did people go from using their own judgement to relying so heavily on very pessimistic dates?

I don't think I've ever found meat or fish off by the use by date or even a day or two after?

Then for dairy, eggs, some veg, it can last weeks after or even months for cheese.

When did people start to think you're supposed to keep butter in the fridge? That's another common one.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 26/07/2024 04:13

Unless your fridge is operating at a lower temp than recommended then yes. Definitely eat it.

Haha I know. Those dates are all a scam to make us waste food and buy more. I wish people would realise that. I never check them

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/07/2024 06:22

No as once I ate salmon out of date By one day. It didn't smell

But I was so so so sick

Goslingsforlife · 26/07/2024 06:24

i would eat it. these dates are a rough guide. Trust your nose. as long as it doesn't smell fishy!

Whatsnormalhere · 26/07/2024 06:25

No and wouldn’t consider it for your 14 month old!

DilemmaDelilah · 26/07/2024 07:36

No I wouldnt. I am aware that many people would, but I wouldnt. Some things I will eat when 'out of date' , but not uncooked fish or meat.

Seaglassandchampagne · 26/07/2024 07:50

How does it smell? You’ll know pretty quickly if it’s off. Use by dates tend to be more like guidelines than hard rules.

RenoDakota · 26/07/2024 07:59

No. I would eat practically anything after its date, apart from fish and chicken.
