To be really sick of supermarkets treating paying customers like scum

Sainsbury's traps you in the self service pen of shame until you scan your receipt like a good little girl

Tesco won't take the security tags off your wine until you've not only paid but they've examined your receipt in detail to make sure your wine is paid for - sort of a performance so you remember your place

Waitrose makes a bit song and dance about doing the rescan of self scanning shops (I don't do self scanning because why would I sign up for this extra work?)

Just in Lidl and my wine set off the security alarm even though I've had the tags taken off and the security guard chased me out the door to try to get me to show him inside my bags (er no fuck off pal)

Aldi staff try to look in your shopping bags as you queue

Does anywhere NOT get a kick out of treating their profit drivers like filth any more?

I will probably just have to live off UHPs from the local Greggs at this rate

@Comedycook

you really don’t like security guards do you? I've rarely come across a security guard who wasn't an ignorant, rude jobsworth

politicalintrigue · 25/07/2024 15:32

and by the sold d of it @Comedycook you have had multiple runs in with security guards

Comedycook · 25/07/2024 15:28

So they are saying you can only leave once you have done this? Therefore your exit is impeded until you comply? Correct?

It's part of the process, it's not an accusation of theft.
You sound like a wannabe barrister who is woefully uninformed.
Why on earth does this burn your hide so much?

Not really.

Two weeks post partum and with my newborn baby in tow a security tag set off the barrier.... checkout assistant didn't remove it. I showed my receipt and it was returned to me. He then asked to see it again and he told me this was because he needed to know which checkout operator had made the mistake. I refused to show it again and I had no wish for the staff member to get into trouble. He proceeded to block my path and refused to let me leave. Do you think that's acceptable?

That's insane. Hope he got the trouble he claimed to be planning for his colleague.

@OptimismvsRealism @Comedycook oh ffs.... it's not always about getting the Sales Assistant in "trouble" sometimes it's just making sure they are aware of a procedure they either wasn't told they need to do or how to do it.

Any shop or chain they not caught you shoplifting in yet. I actually find I don't do this so I dont have similar issues too you.

Maybe it's just me. 💁

Yep and their training process is nothing to do with me nor my responsibility. I had proved that I had paid for the item. My end of the bargain was complete. He had no right to physically stand in front of me and my two week old baby at that point and block my path

i think you’re best bet is online OP

i fear that there is so much you’re pissed off about in the world, you’re going to head butt a security guard and get arrested in the near future

Small, local shops. Buy direct from the farm gate or market.

Toetouchingtitties · 25/07/2024 15:45

I have to agree when it comes to Sainsbury’s. Their approach is to hold you against your will for no lawful reason.

Needmorelego · 25/07/2024 15:46

@Comedycook and again I am proved that I am so glad I got out of retail.
How many seconds would it have taken to show him the receipt a second time so he can just glance at it again?
About 10.....

I'd proven I hadn't stolen. I am obliged to do nothing else. What kind of man then thinks he can stand in front of a woman with a baby to stop her leaving.

a twat

but bugger all to do with this issue

he was trying to see which colleague had made a mistake. Very reasonable. Nothing to do with suspecting you of anything.

His response to you stamping your feet and refusing to was not acceptable though

So… you showed him or… you’re still there?

exactly

someone like this must have so many instances in their day where they dig their heels in and refuse to do something because they don’t have to. What a depressing way to live

Needmorelego · 25/07/2024 15:50

@Comedycook he probably wasn't "accusing" you of stealing - he was likely asking to double check because if a tag actives the alarm it can just be down to the simple error that it hasn't been removed.
Would you rather get all the way home to discover you can't remove a tag and so can't use the product?
And then he just wanted to see which sales assistant it was so he can let them know (not get them in "trouble").

No the situation was the alarm went off because the tag was still on the item. I was perfectly fine to show my receipt. The tag was then removed. I then went to leave. He remembered he was meant to check the receipt to see which staff member had served me and had forgotten to remove. I said no he couldn't see it again. I didn't want anyone to get into trouble. He then stood in front of me and when I tried to step around him to leave proceeded to stay in front of me and stop me until I raised my voice and demanded he let me leave.

can you not see reasonable to find out colleague so that they can be reminded to take off tags

totally reasonable
