To be really sick of supermarkets treating paying customers like scum

Sainsbury's traps you in the self service pen of shame until you scan your receipt like a good little girl

Tesco won't take the security tags off your wine until you've not only paid but they've examined your receipt in detail to make sure your wine is paid for - sort of a performance so you remember your place

Waitrose makes a bit song and dance about doing the rescan of self scanning shops (I don't do self scanning because why would I sign up for this extra work?)

Just in Lidl and my wine set off the security alarm even though I've had the tags taken off and the security guard chased me out the door to try to get me to show him inside my bags (er no fuck off pal)

Aldi staff try to look in your shopping bags as you queue

Does anywhere NOT get a kick out of treating their profit drivers like filth any more?

I will probably just have to live off UHPs from the local Greggs at this rate

@S0livagant if the gates at the entrance are one way and I want to leave that way I generally just politely ask the security guard that's there to let me out.
They always oblige happily.

Awwww please please can I leave Mr nice security guard..

budgiegirl · 25/07/2024 15:18

It doesn't bother me at all - shops are just doing their best to stop shoplifting, which is on the increase. I'd rather they check my receipt than put their prices up even more than they already have. I've nothing to hide.

They're not accusing you, they're just treating all customers to same. Would you rather they made a judgement by how you looked? The unlikeliest looking people also steal you know.

My friend has a small boutique clothes shop, and theft has increased so much that she has to lock the door and just open it to let a few people in at a time. Not what she wants to do, but she has no choice if she wants to remain open.

No that hasn't always been the case. It goes against the code of our society. Innocent until proven guilty. If they think someone has committed a crime then deal with that....this system turns that on its head. You are being told you must prove you haven't committed a crime before you are allowed to leave.

Oh, give over 😂. You're not being accused of a crime when you're asked to show your receipt, they're not actually accusing you of theft.
Your posts positively reek of paranoia.

It's just we didn't use to have to do that. The entrance used to be open so you'd feel welcome. It's going backwards to how it was when I was a child.

Bluebirdover · 25/07/2024 15:20

Morrisons? They don't have these measures.

S0livagant · 25/07/2024 15:21

And why have an out gate then block it?

Security guards have always checked people’s bags or receipts for various reasons, you’re talking utter nonsense! It has nothing to do with a code of society, innocent until proven guilty is in legal terms, in terms of private premises they are perfectly entitled to check you haven’t popped something in your bag that you haven’t paid for at a self checkout, or if you paid at a manned checkout for that matter.

Really. How do you think scanning your little receipt like a good girl good girl can I have a biscuit stops theft?

Because it stops people leaving without paying.

I feel sorry for the supermarket assistants dealing with your passive aggressive sarcasm.

I'm not paranoid because I'm not imagining this. They are saying you can't leave unless you prove you haven't stolen anything.....you're therefore being detained surely?

No it doesn't. It only stops people leaving without paying for anything.

oh dear

i think you’ve misunderstood what “innocent until proven guilty means” @Comedycook 😳

Normallynumb · 25/07/2024 15:23

I agree with you
I'm disabled and use a Walker and leaving Sainsbury's is a frustrating obstacle course
I go to self scan as I only buy a few items at a time
If the machine doesn't shout at me first, I then set the alarm off because my wheels are too close to the barrier
Much further back and I can't reach to scan the bloody receipt to get out!
I get that it is because of shoplifting but it's exhausting and I can't afford to buy enough for an online delivery.

Needmorelego · 25/07/2024 15:24

@Comedycook no usually I say something like "can I come back through please" followed by "cheers mate".
Perfectly normal polite adult interaction.

Suspicious of every customer regardless of their behaviour then?

Hyperbole much? All these actions appear to fall within the realm of an appropriate and prudent reciprocal arrangement that co-exists between customer and provider of the goods.... Scum? Get a grip.

Needmorelego · 25/07/2024 15:26

@S0livagant I remember little turnstile style entrances in the 80s when I was a child.
I think our local Spar had some plus Bejam and Somerfield (which might have been called Fine Fare then).

How are you being detained when all that's asked of you is that you flash your receipt? Or are you too bloody minded to do this and prefer to spend far longer arguing the toss?

S0livagant · 25/07/2024 15:27

While the supermarkets are treating customers like criminals I can still buy my eggs locally and leave the cash in the honesty box. I'm continually trying to cut down on the money I give to supermarkets and I wish it could be fuck all.

So they are saying you can only leave once you have done this? Therefore your exit is impeded until you comply? Correct?

They had them in the Sainsbury's in town. Of course as a child I thought they were exciting. It really feels like we are going backwards though.

I was referring to the exit barriers which only let you out once you scan your receipt. This applies to everyone

Suspicious of every customer regardless of their behaviour then?

Who is to judge what "suspicious behaviour" is when it comes to shop lifting? Many have it down to a fine art now and display no "suspicious behaviours" at all anymore, brazen as you like! I'm pretty sure a security guard would get a lot more hassle if he approached someone he thought was acting suspiciously, rather than having proof such as no receipt for the goods in your hand or an alarm going off!

And what is suspicious anyway? I would find it suspicious if someone tried to leg it through a scanning area with a bag of groceries, not willing to produce a receipt for them, or if someone asked to remove a security tag before paying, or if someone walked through the security area and set off an alarm, but according to yourself and OP those are normal behaviours that the shops only have in place to make you feel like scum and detain you
