To be really sick of supermarkets treating paying customers like scum

Sainsbury's traps you in the self service pen of shame until you scan your receipt like a good little girl

Tesco won't take the security tags off your wine until you've not only paid but they've examined your receipt in detail to make sure your wine is paid for - sort of a performance so you remember your place

Waitrose makes a bit song and dance about doing the rescan of self scanning shops (I don't do self scanning because why would I sign up for this extra work?)

Just in Lidl and my wine set off the security alarm even though I've had the tags taken off and the security guard chased me out the door to try to get me to show him inside my bags (er no fuck off pal)

Aldi staff try to look in your shopping bags as you queue

Does anywhere NOT get a kick out of treating their profit drivers like filth any more?

I will probably just have to live off UHPs from the local Greggs at this rate

Ive never experienced any of this 🤷‍♀️.

PurpleDiva22 · 25/07/2024 14:57

I'm confused why you can't see how these things make sense....

Proving youve paid for the item before removing the tag: around here if people manage to get items out of the shop without the alarm going off, they bring them back because they "forgot to take the security tag off". It's quite common to be asked for proof of purchase.

Your item set off the security alarm.... I'm not really sure why you are surprised or angry you were asked to show your bags? It's literally the point of the alarm? As with any technology, they come with a fault like wrongly going off but 9 times out of 10 they work!

We don't have Waitrose but Tesco do the self scan rescan once every couple of shops. They don't know who I am, they don't know I'm an honest person, it doesn't really bother me they want to check every so often that I'm using their system correctly?

You are very angry for no reason!

God, you sound exhausting, op. I bet you think you're being all edgy and sticking it to the Man. You just sound like a not very bright teenager pissed off at their mum.

Well it is the school holidays now isn't it.

Wait until the OP notices that most self scan tills now have cameras on so you can get a close up of all your chins so they have evidence if you're putting through courgettes as carrots.

SummerSnowstorm · 25/07/2024 14:53

It's partly culture changing over time, more awareness that police won't do anything unless there's excessive violence, and some of it seems to be organised crime. Again likely worsened by the state of the police and how stretched they are, which is again worsened by societal changes.
CoL will contribute to some cases, and gives them more customers, but it's far from the only cause otherwise it would be widespread across young families rather than primarily being groups of 18-30 males.

I'd say women do it too. Just that it's young men boldly walking out. Women are more likely to pay for some things and hide other things.

BuzzKiller · 25/07/2024 14:56

It doesn’t help that there are no consequences for low level theft (I heard a rumour that the police won’t be called unless the theft amounts to over £250. Unsure whether that’s accurate or not though!)

The police may be called but unless you live in Sleepytown they almost certainly won't come.

I think it’s only a matter of time before supermarkets where you can just wander around and pick stuff up are gone. As soon as they can fully mechanise and automate the picking process I predict supermarkets will be nothing more than collection points for prepaid orders, fulfilled by robots in a few giant warehouses. Which will solve lots of OPs problems, as shop lifting will be a thing of the past.

MartyFunkhouser · 25/07/2024 14:58

Can’t say I relate to any of this. We do our shopping in Tesco and mostly a small local M&S.

Di you live in a bad area, OP?

SummerSnowstorm · 25/07/2024 14:56

You do realise that the people you're causing drama and confrontation with are doing their job?
They aren't the ones who thought up the security measures.

Indeed but hopefully they can feed up the chain. And also even if they are only obeying orders, I don't necessarily have to cooperate with their policy. I have to live within the law of this country, that's all.

RLouiseH · 25/07/2024 14:58

I know what you mean- I don’t mind the measures but it’s the way we can be treated.

I bought a dress from Tesco the other day at self checkout (along with a few grocery items) and after I scanned it, before bagging it, I walked a few steps over to where the member of staff was stood and showed the tag and asked if she was okay to remove it. Really shortly she said “where’s your receipt?” And I said “oh sorry I’ve just scanned it, I’ve not finished with my other bits yet.” And SO rudely she said “well I’m not going to take the tag off until you’ve paid, you need to pay first then bring me the receipt to prove it.” I don’t feel it comes off strong enough when I type it but she said it so rudely/patronisingly and I felt really embarrassed. I apologised and went back to my machine and carried on scanning/bagging and then when I had finished up I took the dress and receipt over to her, and she took it off without a word to me.
I feel like their system makes sense, I get why they do it, it just hasn’t occurred to me as I scanned, and ultimately I feel she did NOT need to speak to me like that, a simple smile and a “Oo I’ll do it once you’re finished up, just pop back over to me with the recipt!” Said in in friendly tone, would’ve been much better.

It's not their job to look inside people's private property and they have no right to demand it.

Really. How do you think scanning your little receipt like a good girl good girl can I have a biscuit stops theft?

I would examine yourself carefully to see why this is so triggering for you.

ScottishScouser · 25/07/2024 14:59

Its area dependent

They don't do that where I live - in fact the tags off the wine are often removed when were in the queue for self serve chatting to the staff.

I'm in the highlands.

But where my mother is... the staff have body cams and its everything like you describe.

She's in Liverpool

So what do you think the protocol should be in that situation?

Strathfan · 25/07/2024 15:00

“Sainsbury's traps you in the self service pen of shame until you scan your receipt like a good little girl”

😂😂😂 god yes!!! Our local one doesn’t do this but my mums one does. Ridiculous. Put me off going there again.

mitogoshi · 25/07/2024 15:00

Have no clue what you're talking about. Never experienced any of these things. And yes i use self checkouts and yes I buy alcohol. I've never had to scan a receipt to get out either

VickyEadieofThigh · 25/07/2024 15:01

My Tesco doesn't have security tags on wine so there's none of that going on.

Mrsttcno1 · 25/07/2024 15:01

Some people actually do just love a winge don’t they🤣 all of these things do reduce theft. Putting the barrier in the self service area means you at least have to buy SOMETHING to get out, you can’t simply walk straight on through.

Of course they need to check you’ve paid for the wine/spirit before they take the security tag off- that is literally the point of security tags.

OF COURSE if you set the security alarm off when leaving a store they can check to see if you only have the items you’ve paid for or any additional.

ALL of these things reduce theft, or at least discourage people as they know there is at least hoops to jump through to be successful. If there was no security tags, no receipt scan to leave self checkout and no security on the door then it would be incredibly easy to just pick up a bottle of wine and walk straight out without paying.

Needmorelego · 25/07/2024 15:01

Not really, a private business is private property and has every right to enforce its own rules and ban would be customers who don’t comply and make a commotion every time they come into store wasting their resources.
If you don’t want to cooperate with their policy then your only right is to choose not to shop there, not to go and do whatever the fuck you like.

Lovemycat2023 · 25/07/2024 15:03

TerfTalking · 25/07/2024 14:42

Must be the area you live in. My town has a Tesco, Sainsbo and Lidl and we have none of these.

The Tesco tag thing doesn’t make sense, if you go through a till they take it off whilst you are putting your stuff through, if you go through self scan once you’ve paid they take it off, they don’t check your receipt as they can see it on the screen and The Red light flashes when you indicate you have an item with tags so there’s usually staff close by. I’ve never had to show a receipt in Tesco for a tagged item.

I had this recently in a Tesco - I asked for the tag to be removed when the assistant came over to the self scan to confirm my age. She didn’t do it, I asked her to explain and she sort of said “after you’ve paid”. I was really confused. So I paid, packed my bags, and then had to wait for her to come over again. Now it makes sense. I don’t usually shop in person and think they’ve changed how they do it.

Comedycook · 25/07/2024 15:03

zzar45 · 25/07/2024 14:56

You’re very cool.

Indeed. I certainly think it's a shame so many people are such sheep that they will comply with being detained by a shop until they prove their innocence.

Me neither. And I buy a lot of alcohol! They don't have security tags on the wine, at my local Asda, they do on the spirits though. Is it really a big deal to show your receipt though anyway? First world problems.
