To be really sick of supermarkets treating paying customers like scum

Sainsbury's traps you in the self service pen of shame until you scan your receipt like a good little girl

Tesco won't take the security tags off your wine until you've not only paid but they've examined your receipt in detail to make sure your wine is paid for - sort of a performance so you remember your place

Waitrose makes a bit song and dance about doing the rescan of self scanning shops (I don't do self scanning because why would I sign up for this extra work?)

Just in Lidl and my wine set off the security alarm even though I've had the tags taken off and the security guard chased me out the door to try to get me to show him inside my bags (er no fuck off pal)

Aldi staff try to look in your shopping bags as you queue

Does anywhere NOT get a kick out of treating their profit drivers like filth any more?

I will probably just have to live off UHPs from the local Greggs at this rate

I do wonder about the health and safety aspect of all of these gates, especially where it is also gated to get into the store, for example if the store needed to be evacuated in an emergency.

Experience tells me that needing a receipt to exit (or to ask to be let out without buying anything) is problematic if you need to rush out.....morning sickness was so much fun!

Where have you had to ask to be let out without buying anything?

My local Sainsbury's has all the security features the OP mentions. If you want to go out without buying anything you walk towards the exit gate and it opens for you automatically.

Laserwho · 26/07/2024 06:50

Shops need to take security measures. But I think ops description is unrealistic, why would security bother you if you haven't been stealing? In Aldi yes they do ask to look in your bags, all you have to do is lift up your bag so they can see in side. Job done, why complain about it? Of course you need to pay for alcohol before the tags removed. Of course security will talk to you if the security light and buzzer goes of as you are leaving the shop. If you hear it just stop and go back and speak to them, if you continue to leave the shop they will run after you, what do you expect? Jeez some people .

The receipt scanner barriers and the physical blocking could amount to illegal detention.

False accusations of theft raise all sorts of legal issues. You can't ban people on a whim.

Harassment by security staff can raise discrimination issues.

The employer has to ensure that their employees don't behave unlawfully to members of the public and that the inside of the shop is safe.

It’s not unlawful detention - you are not detained. You are briefly segregated, at most encouraged to go a certain way. It is not a detention.

Further upthread you said nobody is fearful of a theft conviction now you think a false accusation is problematic?

If they check everyone in the same way how do you think that will give rise to discrimination.

Youre reaching OP. I thought you’d calm down as the thread went on but you appear to have gained traction.

I don’t think any of these places are treating customers like scum.

sled service check outs if not monitored properly make it easy for actual scum to shop lift.

and I’ve seen many times on here ppl admitting to little indiscretions on the self service check outs.

and whenever I’ve had my shopping rescanned at Waitrose they’ve been nothing but friendly and apologetic.

If you don’t like it, do online or use the manned tills,

Er.....yes.....Sainsbury's. Not because it was a big deal aside the fact I needed to leave QUICKLY. They've installed one way gates INTO the store, gates were closed to the manned tills and I tried to get out through the self service area to the toilets and didn't have a receipt as I'd not bought anything. I had to ask the staff member on the self serve to let me out. Not an issue that bothers me day-to-day but was that day and I imagine will be equally fun when we get to potty training stage.

There would have been another exit gate that didn't require you to show proof of purchase.

If the exit gate opens automatically, why do you need to scan your receipt? My local doesn't open unless you scan your receipt and has gates into the store so you can't go out the main entrance and so have to leave via the till area. The assistant is quite happy to scan you out so personally don't think it's that big a deal other than if you need to leave quickly for some reason.

The measures are about 'security theatre'.

To many hardcore shoplifters they will make no difference whatsoever they'll just carry on. However to casual shoplifters when they walk into a store that has more security features it'll heighten their sense of nervousness and possibly stop them from shroplifting that's all it's about and I support shops in this.

Well I don't know how you would get out without showing a receipt in some way unless you waited for someone to come in the barriers and rushed out.

Not quite sure what your point is though. Did I feel like I was hounded as a shoplifter? Nope. Was it inconvenient? Yep. Can I imagine other scenarios whereby it will be inconvenient? Yep. Ultimately it is them that is going to have to deal with the mess. I'm far from the only woman who has to deal with morning sickness AND the weekly shop and that's without considering all the other reasons people might need to get out quickly.

Hateam · 26/07/2024 07:31

Anyway, the worst anybody can say about this is that it is a mild irritation that is easily avoided.

This is exactly how they do it, it’s so common and why they’ve had to implement the receipt scan.

So just don't have the bloody self scan tills.

Get everyone to go through a manned till do the shop staff scan everything. Then if stuff is " missed" then they can't be blaming the customer . If shops don't trust the customers then don't make them do the checking out work then want to micromanage it

Seems the shops must lose less from thefts at self scans than they save not employing enough staff to man the tills though

I agree with @SherbetSweeties if people don’t like self service, join a queue at a staffed till. I like wandering round Sainsbury’s with my scanner. Been asked just once to have my shopping checked, no problem, the very polite staff member was just doing their job.

Supermarkets are struggling to maintain their margins and many UK supermarkets are now only propped up by their international chains where they’re performing better.

Theft is a huge source of leakage and with the COL it’s also becoming even more prevalent.

So, yes, I think YABU, it’s a reaction to the increase in theft and a desire to be profitable as a business.

What are you on about? Tesco made .£2.3 billion in profit last year, up by £800million.

They are using the cost of living as a cover for corporate greed.

None of which excuses theft mind.

I only went into the self checkout area BECAUSE I wanted to leave quickly.

The main shop ONLY has barriers INTO the store, NOT out of it so to leave you HAVE to go via the till area. On this particular occasion of the 2 or 3 manned tills they were all closed with barriers across. The ONLY way to leave was via the self serve area (either baskets, trolleys or hand scanner thing) and those all need a receipt to scan out of or to be let out by staff (or I suppose to run out when someone else scans a receipt). You are talking as if you know my local store and it's layout which is mildly concerning. As I say it doesn't bother me day to day, but it isn't ideal and actually a scanner to 'scan out' the main door would possibly be more convenient given this stores particular layout. I recently visited a different store and the toilets were INSIDE the main store (not beyond the checkouts) which totally resolved the issues I had personally. I didn't note the possible entrances/exits in and out though as it was a one off visit, I'd got nothing to hide and just went about my day.

Upandaway1000 · 26/07/2024 07:48

I was thinking this just yesterday. I spend 400 a month in Sainsburys and the service is shocking, there is only 1 til open so you have to self scan. Imagine any other shop or service you pay that much for treating you the same? I could get a membership to a luxury spa and two treatments per month for the same price!!
