Is It true labour are adding on a 20% VAT on private schools? Literally the first I’ve heard of it from MN - can’t work out if it’s real or a joke?

So I’ve googled it… it’s true - who knew this ????

What I’ll do now is make lots of posts asking what we all think of it and consider the impact and really get into the fine detail of it as it’s very interesting and life changing to me personally

Who knew? Well, me for a start and I don’t even have kids!

SoupDragon · 24/07/2024 10:19

Gosh, how witty and original of you OP! My sides are literally splitting and my tea has been spat out.

🙄

It was in their manifesto.

Welcome to COMMUNISM. If you voted for KIEV Starmer I hope you're happy now.

You are either being sarcastic or you are very very foolish.

Apollo365 · 24/07/2024 10:31

OP is being sarcy! Come on guys.

OP is being very saucy … yep I am 🤣… I’m bored to death of the posts about it. There’s 600,000 in private schools - there’s 10,300 children in school in the UK so around a 5%. It’s all we hear about on here- same arguments, I’m unsure why people are trying to change others minds over it!

Oh I see what you did there! Kier / Kiev. Very clever! Totally validates your closely reasoned argument. I’m VERY impressed. (Although I think Ukraine has a multi-party democracy).

AvrielFinch · 24/07/2024 11:04

Because they think if they can scaremonger, public pressure will force the government to change the policy. That is why they claim there will be no school places in good state schools, it will all cost taxpayers more and we will all have to pay an extra 20% on nurseries. Its all rubbish. And pretty obviously rubbish.
They obviously think parents of state school kids are all a bit thick.

Sockmate123 · 24/07/2024 11:12

Genuine question on this funny thread 🙈 but what does CF stand for? I don't know, nor brand new to MN but not a veteran either 🤣🤣

amymel2016 · 24/07/2024 11:20

Are you sure OP? I simply cannot afford another 20%! We’ve promised Tristan a brand new pony this year and Tabitha a new grand piano for her bedroom. Gosh, I really hope they stop the teachers there getting a discounted rate, I’ve never thought it was fair that they get money off just for working there, if they can’t afford full fees then go to state! Also, how will the state system cope?! This is the end of civilisation as we know it.

Because this isn’t good “satire”. It’s a poor imitation of it that has fallen flat.

Cheeky fuck CF stands for - I don’t know where but on this site there’s a whole page of what the initials stand for. No idea where though 🙈

I literally feel this… is there a way @mumsnet can move the conversations into the education section?

Oh and I say this as a private school parent - I give zero fucks about the VAT added. I don’t expect anyone else to care - it’s a pointless conversation to have! We pay or we move our kids- done! Not sure what the rallying around really is - there’s plenty of legitimate forums where action is being taken for those who oppose the proposal and MN is not one!

I think you should really start several threads about it, there definitely haven't been enough on MN so far.

There have been plenty of other threads on mumsnet recently, and this topic hasn't been trending for days. You must have gone to some trouble to find the relevant threads. I'm not sure how you can be bored by something that there's no need for you to read about if you don't want to, or why you chose to start another thread on a topic you find so tedious. 🙄

There’s literally one now on the first page asking for pro voters and yesterday another and it reached the max comments! They’re everywhere

Have you been living under a rock? It’s been in all the news for past couple of months with the elections

Jonesthebootmaker · 24/07/2024 16:12

Parents of those children in private education - this message is directed at you.

  1. There’s a fantastic, informative Facebook group you can join which gives up to date information about the policy and also weekly updates about the motions in place to contest the policy. It didn’t get passed before due to these contested issues- there is a council opposing it and going down the legal route.
  1. If the policy gets passed - private schools will look at reducing the fees they currently charge and then (as it will be a legal requirement to do so) add the VAT on so it’s inline with the current fees. They will take away bursaries and scholarships as to not increase the fees further. (Appreciate that’s not ideal for those children who currently have them but they can’t justify increasing fees and others having it for discounted or free).
  1. If the policy comes into place, private schools can now claim back the VAT from building work from previous years and going forward, this will allow them to absorb some of the costs.
  1. Those parents of children who have put their child in due to SEN needs - two points- firstly - if your child needs an EHCP start the process. There’s some brilliant third parties who will help you get this and help you with the tribunal appeal. This means the EHCP can go to state school with you if you move OR it means you won’t pay the VAT as labour said children with EHCPs are exempt.
Secondly, if your child doesn’t have the need level and wouldn’t get an EHCP talk to the school, I’m sure they would prefer to keep you than lose you over a relatively small about of money.
  1. Those parents with their own businesses- get an account and use your child allowance gift aid that is tax free (just this alone pays for the VAT in one year).
  1. If you need to move into state schools- you can move location to a Grammar school area or better school. If you do this before the natural period of transitions you’ll be guaranteed a place. Don’t panic!
  1. Lastly- private school parents - I’m not sure Mumsnet is the best place to discuss a policy that doesn’t apply to many and doesn’t involve them. Parents who oppose it need to be on the plenty of forums who are taking action rather than arguing with people who are against private schools/ have no political sway either way/ it’s not their personal business and argue when those in private schools put forward logical , backed up arguments.
