Smoking outside in populated public places.

It was a beautiful day as I sat outside my local coffee shop with my 2 children, drinking smoothies and soaking up the sunshine.
Then BOOM, the table next to us lights up a cigarette and it blows our way.

The day before we were lining the streets for a tractor run…. We had a front view and the kids are at the front. Then BOOM, a man behind us lights up just as it’s beginning and is breathing the smoke down on us.

Why oh why is smoking allowed outside, and not just in designated smoking areas, where they can all sit and smoke together. It happens us all the time.

Yes they’re entitled to do it, but is it right? Hell no.

What sort of cigarettes go "BOOM" when someone lights them up?

MohairTortoise · 22/07/2024 13:55

Most of the complaints about smoking or vaping seem to focus on the smell.
If smoking or vaping is banned in all public spaces, can we then move onto BO, smelly breath, food smells, dog shit smells and overpowering perfume? None of which are an addiction nor need to be smelt outside?
Once they are all banned, then maybe we can move onto transport smells by making all vehicles have zero emissions?

Bloom15 · 22/07/2024 13:55

@ClaudiaWankleman it's also a choice for a smoker to smoke. No one is making them

Werweisswohin · 22/07/2024 13:55

ClaudiaWankleman · 22/07/2024 13:51

Don't you think it's also quite selfish to expect to direct the perfectly legal behaviour of others, especially when those same others have already made concessions to you (by being outside)?

It's a word that's overused on MN, but it fits here - entitled.

The entitled ones are the smokers.
Nothing changes that fact.

Werweisswohin · 22/07/2024 13:56

Ginlfixit · 22/07/2024 13:53

How exactly? It wasn't smokers who lobbied to ban smoking indoors.

It is their choice to smoke. 🫣

emmetgirl · 22/07/2024 13:56

SemperIdem · 22/07/2024 12:47

Move if it bothers you so much. They’re not (currently) doing anything wrong.

I'm a non smoker and completely agree with you.
There are lots of smelly things outdoors. I'm sick of hearing people moaning about others doing something COMPLETELY LEGAL.
Get over it.

ns87 · 22/07/2024 13:56

Drives me mad too, you get out into the fresh air from a shop or transport straight into plumes of toxic smoke.

It's fairly antisocial to force most of those smells onto others too tbh, but cigarette smoke really is particularly vile smelling.

Meanwhile someone justifying smoking sounds......😵‍💫

I'm not justifying smoking - I'm saying that someone smoking outdoors in accordance with the law isn't being unreasonable. Do you often have problems following logic and reasoning?

californiaisdreaming · 22/07/2024 14:02

ScholesPanda · 22/07/2024 13:01

I know it seems to be an increasingly rare point of view, but I'd say it's a free country, and you should stop trying to control what everyone else around you is doing. Even if (the horror) you don't like it! You're not the main character in everyone's life story!

This is like saying it's ok to play music out loud on a bus where everyone can hear it, stop making yourself the main character in everyone else's life story.

ICanNeverRememberPasswords · 22/07/2024 14:02

Just because something is legal, doesn't make it ok. It's gross, it stinks, it's unhealthy. I wish they'd ban it.

Ponderingwindow · 22/07/2024 14:04

BIossomtoes · 22/07/2024 11:12

It has no impact on your health. The ill effects of passive smoking were the reason for the smoking ban indoors. The smell is irrelevant.

The smell is not irrelevant. The ingredients used to produce the flavor and smell are allergens for a number of people. Those allergens are being aerosolized by the vapes. They get on our skin and into our lungs and trigger allergic reactions.

flavored vapes are a menace.

PassingStranger · 22/07/2024 14:05

people just need to give up. Theres nothing nice about it.
Id be bloody embarrassed smoking as an adult.

Readytoevolve · 22/07/2024 12:57

@Klippityklopp people who post in AIBU also can have a sense of humour and find other peoples opinions funny.
it’s funny to me because it validates the difficulty people like me experience and the poor attitudes ( no fucks given) towards those impacted by such offenders.
Better to laugh than cry I say!

So really you don't think YABU, but you think posters you don't agree with you are worth laughing at as you find it funny that anyone would disagree with you?

Humans are allowed to do things that are legal around other humans, those others can then do what you and others are doing as in “whaaaaaa whaaaaa, someone’s doing something I don’t like it should be banned” and little by little others will listen and those things will be stopped. Bit by bit all pointless things like smoking, diesel tractors in a tractor parade, flying, manufacturing, drinking alcohol and overpopulating the planet with too many children will stop, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and with social media these opinions spread quicker, so that EVERYTHING that others object to is heard, and everything will be stopped, including something annoying you probably do or like!

californiaisdreaming · 22/07/2024 14:09

Since when is what a law abiding citizen does the bar on which you measure what it is and isn't ok to do?

It's ok to cheat on your spouse, all day everyday if you want.

Does that make it ok?

Errors · 22/07/2024 14:10

Werweisswohin · 22/07/2024 13:47

MN can't hate anyone - MN is a chat site. I'm with the MN members who hate smoking though. 🤢🤢🤢

Hahhhaa - you’re funny.
Absolute gold these comments

I mean, yeah. It is and it does.

wtfissummer · 22/07/2024 14:11

YANBU OP

Gross and selfish. I know it's not illegal but it is anti social

They have no self awareness though

And they stink

InterIgnis · 22/07/2024 14:12

Can’t say it bothers me tbh, as someone who doesn’t smoke. I have no desire to see it banned.

It's legal to, I meant

ns87 · 22/07/2024 14:13

Smoking really doesn't look cool, it looks like you are blowing a tiny tube. 😂

Get over it.

Lots of things are legal but you’re still a dick if you do it in close proximity to other people.

AlyssumandHelianthus · 22/07/2024 14:15

I've never smoked and I don't like the smell, but I think it's OTT to ban smoking outside.
Love the 'BOOM' and why oh why though 😂
