Smoking outside in populated public places.

It was a beautiful day as I sat outside my local coffee shop with my 2 children, drinking smoothies and soaking up the sunshine.
Then BOOM, the table next to us lights up a cigarette and it blows our way.

The day before we were lining the streets for a tractor run…. We had a front view and the kids are at the front. Then BOOM, a man behind us lights up just as it’s beginning and is breathing the smoke down on us.

Why oh why is smoking allowed outside, and not just in designated smoking areas, where they can all sit and smoke together. It happens us all the time.

Yes they’re entitled to do it, but is it right? Hell no.

AIBU?

Correct.

I was laughing at your ridiculousness. Nothing perfect abou being selfish.

Cinocino · 23/07/2024 13:38

@InterIgnis They are smoking where they are legally entitled to. If you don’t like it then it absolutely is on you to move away.

I take it you have no issues with playing music out loud on busses, approaching women for their personal information in quiet spaces, even following vulnerable women and girls home, I mean if none of it is illegal what’s the problem right?

Let's not pretend that following someone home, presumably with mal intent, is comparable to someone minding their own business smoking a cigarette. It cheapens the actual threat to vulnerable people from stalking etc.

Excited101 · 23/07/2024 13:24

And they nearly always hold their cigarettes at the head height of small children walking/sitting in prams- it’s grim.

Yes.
Let's demand all smokers immediately apologise for having normal length arms.

(totally fine for the exhaust fumes of cars, buses and those tractors the OP wanted to get her kids closer to, though. Obvs)

You mean my statement of fact that you don’t like?

Laughing at it, and finding it ridiculous, doesn’t render it any less true.

Nope, none of those things are illegal.

Blowing smoke on someone who could have chest issues, could be young etc can very much involve mal intent. At best it’s an incredibly unpleasant thing to do to someone else, at worst it’s a health hazard.

It’s a grim thing to force on other people who are just trying to walk down the street to get from A to B.

Stop comparing a vile and unnecessary habit with diesel vehicles which perform important roles in society. 🤢

Nope, I support clean vehicles as well and have no issue with things like the CC and ULEZ which plenty of people take issue with.

What I do or don’t take issue with is irrelevant. If something is legal then as much as I may or may not like it, I’m not in position to demand someone stop doing it based on my own preferences.

No one is blowing smoke into anyone's lungs anymore than cars are blowing it into your lungs or cows are farting it into your lungs. If you follow someone home with the intention of scaring them, breaking in, doing something else, it is absolutely a crime. You're really quite a ridiculous person and could probably do with a cigarette to calm yourself down.

HoorahhoorahTheyaregoingaway · 23/07/2024 13:52

Werweisswohin · 23/07/2024 13:36

Again this word 'entitled'.
Let's just replace it with 'selfish' because that's what you being when you do it so close to others.

The smoker did not ask the non smoker to sit near them. The non smoker also doesn't mind their children getting full of fumes from lots of tractors either!

Actually people are as entitled to ask you to keep your cigarette stench away from them as you are to light up.

The non-smoker didn't ask the stinking smokers to stand/sit right next to them either. And stop comparing farm vehicles to stinking cigarette smoke.

You’ve yet to explain what my ridiculousness is. I stated a fact, that’s it. That you don’t like it isn’t my problem. Feel free to go write a strongly worded letter to an editor or something.

’My vile habit’? I neither smoke nor vape.

Cars don't blow cigarette smoke.
Cows don't tend to be farting in built up areas.

Why on earth are you defending such a vile habit it you're actually intelligent enough not to do it?
More ridiculousness perhaps.

The point is smokers go outside all the time for a cigarette rain shine or hail when you will be sat inside lovely and cosy! Then the sun comes out and you expect them to move, you can't have it both ways!

Their choice.

The entitled ones will say no.

Because the choices I make for myself don’t have to be the choices others make. Others are free to decide for themselves, and I respect their right to do so.

I’m also not inclined to ignore actual laws if I don’t happen to agree with them.

They’re all entitled to smoke where it’s legally allowed 🤷🏻‍♀️ entirely up to the individual.

So you respect the right of others not to have to breathe in the smoke of selfish smokers too then? 🤣

For the 100th time, being legally allowed does not mean you should have blatant disregard for others.

What like a tractor run??!!
