Dogs in restaurants

Informal dining and cafes, fine. Pubs, fine. But only if dogs are on the floor and reasonably well behaved (by that I mean not barking all the time).Restaurant not fine. Am I alone in this?
If I am paying to go somewhere specifically to enjoy the food and pay extra for it and want to enjoy a special evening (birthday) why do I have to put up with a dog lying on the floor at the table next to me?. I just don't think this is necessary or acceptable. Am I totally alone in this?

I'm a dog owner.

They don't belong in restaurants. Cafe/pub is OK but not a nice restaurant. Its just selfish.

I'm still recovering from seeing one have a poo at a table across from me. The owner knew and did nothing to clean it/tell the staff. Absolutely grim.

Appalling

@Willyoujustbequiet

Didn't it noticeably stink the place out?

No. It was busy and the dog was under a table. But you could tell from the off the were irresponsible owners and I saw as they were directly across from me.

It never occurred to me that a dog owner would behave like that in a restaurant.

You could tell "from the off" that they were irresponsible dog owners?
How?

They had a dog. In a restaurant.

QED.

They put the smaller one on the table and the other was barking and they did nothing to calm it.

If dogs are allowed, then what are they doing wrong, and how are they irresponsible?

GinAndBeerIt · 22/07/2024 16:15

If I owned a restaurant, cafe, pub etc I would welcome dogs because it's more money in my till.

Just keep them out of restaurants and cafes.

It's not hard. People have managed perfectly well to keep dogs out of restaurants for many, many decades.

Leave them at home when you go out to eat, or stay at home yourselves.

Nope. If my dog is with me, we will still continue to frequent dog friendly places

It's not selfish to take your well behaved dog to a dog friendly place

I'm not an irresponsible dog owner and my dog has been to restaurants he's been allowed into. So your method to tell if people are irresponsible is flawed.

As I said it's fine in a cafe/pub if they are well behaved but no not in a nice restaurant when it's not marketed as dog friendly.

It's absolutely selfish.

We've just come back from a weekend at a hotel which had 2 pools. There was a smaller, shallower one which was clearly suitable young children, although there was no signage and no actual 'rule' that said it was the case.

The small pool wasn't full of adults treating it like a hot tub, though, because it clearly wasn't where adults should be and people respected that. There are other more suitable places for the adults to go without inconveniencing/annoying others 'just because they can'.

No. It's up to the owners of any establishment. They have the say.

You didn't say anything about the restaurant not being dog friendly in your comment.

Maybe the owners rang up and asked before turning up. A place can be dog friendly without it being marketed as such.

That has nothing to do with an eatery that has signs up saying dogs are welcome.

Our local cafe is considering banning dogs now as they have been disruptive. They are seeing more and more entitled owners ( ones who allow dogs on the sofas and up at the table, dogs barking, dogs lying in the middle of the thoroughfare tripping up waitresses etc) Totally understand that it’s not actually the dogs fault but the lack of thought and training by the owners. It’s a shame really but think it will swing back to less allowed in cafes and pubs just because of the many who don’t/won’t train or treat their animals properly.

But they do market as dog friendly or they wouldn't be, dog friendly?

No it's up to the owners of the establishment.

If people had gone into the small pool the hotel would have the final word on it.

You can't take a dog somewhere the owner says NO DOGS.

You're stretching there. If they couldn't be arsed to clean up after their dog it's highly unlikely they were thoughtful to ring the venue beforehand.

So rather than adults think, "that small pool looks a lovely size/depth to sit and relax in, but I'm not going to because that would be unfair on others", they should instead just say "fuck it, the management can come and tell us to get out if they don't like it. I'm allowed so fuck everyone else's enjoyment."

But they were there with dogs, so clearly allowed.
