Dogs in restaurants

MealDealDreamz · 21/07/2024 10:50

Informal dining and cafes, fine. Pubs, fine. But only if dogs are on the floor and reasonably well behaved (by that I mean not barking all the time).Restaurant not fine. Am I alone in this?
If I am paying to go somewhere specifically to enjoy the food and pay extra for it and want to enjoy a special evening (birthday) why do I have to put up with a dog lying on the floor at the table next to me?. I just don't think this is necessary or acceptable. Am I totally alone in this?

absolutely! But most people will clean their teeth not long after. Dogs cannot clean their own teeth. Nor can they wipe their own bum hole🤷‍♀️

Most people? I think you have way too much faith in people.
And you and many others on this thread seem very worried about germs. Our bodies are pretty good at protecting us so there's no point worrying about any of it whether it's from human or animal.

@SurferDog

yes most people do clean their teeth

And not everyone has a good immune system.

agreed, vastly majority of people do

Uiommpourting · 22/07/2024 10:18

Our dog has her teeth cleaned every day.

@LuckySantangelo35 Obviously this derails the thread so apologies to other posters but

you don't know this.

@sunglassesonthetable

i do. Just like I know that humans are more hygienic than dogs.

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2024 11:35

When my son was bitten by another child and it broke the skin the GP insisted on a tetanus. She said human bites are more bacteria laden than dogs. But hey.

There is bacteria everywhere tbh. And you too apparently with your nationwide survey on teeth cleaning.😂👍🏻😂

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2024 11:41

I totally understand some people don't want dogs in a restaurant though. That's fine.

Check ahead. Internet and all that.

KimberleyClark · 22/07/2024 11:43

Unless you have an allergy, what is the dog lying on the floor at the next table actually doing to you?

MrNarwhal · 22/07/2024 11:44

I love dogs, I even work in animal rescue with dogs, but I'm so sick of them being everywhere. So I agree op. My children are both nervous of dogs. Yesterday I had to take my son off a play park climbing frame because someone let their dog climb up on it and the dog was coming towards my son. He was petrified. I am so sick of having to look out for dogs in every cafe, restaurant and shop because they are now everywhere humans go.

Making the place stink of smelly dog. Some are worse than others, but even clean dogs have an unpleasant smell that their owners either don't notice or are able to tolerate.

Other people can smell their stinky pets though and don't want dog odours assaulting their nostrils when they are trying to enjoy a meal.

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2024 13:28

Fair enough. Don't eat there. Or check ahead.

HappyWorkingMummy · 22/07/2024 13:29

We have and love dogs but don't always want smelly and barking ones in dining establishments.

There could be dog friendly sections as a fair compromise

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2024 13:32

The only "compromise " is from the restraunt OWNERS..

THEY make the rules.

And money talks. If posters don't like it. Vote with your feet.

Just keep them out of restaurants and cafes.

It's not hard. People have managed perfectly well to keep dogs out of restaurants for many, many decades.

Leave them at home when you go out to eat, or stay at home yourselves.

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2024 14:04

And equally it's not hard to understand that the Restaurant OWNERS make the rules. Speak to them.

Newsflash. Times change.

@AllyCart

AvrielFinch · 22/07/2024 14:22

Times change. It used to be children were a rarity in restaurants, especially young children. Young children are now welcome in most restaurants.

ChesterDrawz · 22/07/2024 14:23

What seems to have happened is a lot of hard-of-thinking people bought dogs during Covid lockdowns - obviously thought they could send them back when they'd done with them - and now expect to take them everywhere.

One of our local pubs has banned dogs again now - they'd already banned them when raining - and the ban has seen regulars return after many left due to a quiet few drinks being regularly ruined by the smell and noise of dogs.

The pub advertised the ban on social media and the landlord said they were overwhelmed by support, even from dog owners!

SurferDog · 21/07/2024 19:57

Humans don’t lick their bare arseholes do they?

No, but some lick other people's arseholes. Rimming anyone? 😅

I think rimming is still considered out of order in restaurants and on trains. But give it time......

You are holding dogs to the same standards as humans.

I could argue that dogs are more hygienic, as they lick their bum holes clean. Most people think a wipe with dry tissue is enough (it isn't).

Are cats hygienic? They are washing themselves all the time. If humans cleaned themselves like cats, then they would be coating their hands with saliva and rubbing it al over themselves. Not so hygienic then.

Anyway, a dog licking itself under a table is not somehow making germs appear on your food.

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2024 14:33

Exactly. Up to the OWNERS of the Pub. They say what goes.

But obviously it's very hard of thinking to think you know what other people are thinking @PaleSunshineOfHope

It is up to the owner of the establishment. If dogs are allowed then there is nothing wrong with dogs being there.

I don't understand why dog owners are labelled "entitled" when comments like yours are exactly that.

Just as places than ban children also get a lot of support.
Most people are fine with children and dogs in restaurants and cafes. A small number of people object to one or both being present. They tend to be vociferous in their opinions.

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2024 15:16

I completely accept some don't want dogs in restaurants.

I get some don't mind.

And I also accept that is entirely up to the owners of any restaurant. Thems the rules.

What I do not understand is if dogs are allowed in somewhere posters are bleating " don't take them" . Like dog owners should self remove from something they are allowed to do.

Rather than the objectors checking first and taking their custom elsewhere.

I have a dog but I wouldn't take him to a restaurant. He wouldn't settle.

But other people's dogs. Don't care unless the rules say no.
