We are in London at the moment. Can I just say I like dogs and have no issue in general with owners, dogs etc as long as they are well behaved and considerate etc.
Was at the embankment tube station and was walking along the platform with my son and husband. Son was a bit ahead taking to another boy.
Suddenly my son and this lad going flying forward and ended up on a heap and this women starts shouting at them. Turns out her little dog was ok an extendable lead and the dog walked right in front of my son and the other lad. The dog was so near the platform edge. I shout back at the women that on what planet does she think having her dog on an extendable lead on the tube platform was ok. Everyone else is just looking in disbelief. Then member of tube staff just walks past ignoring the issue.

the women picks up her dog and storms off back up the platform.
WTF

She's an idiot.

Sunshineafterthehail · 21/07/2024 09:44

Because some people should not own a ddog....

ThePure · 21/07/2024 09:46

I think a lot of people do think that on an extendable lead is the same as being on a fixed short lead when it clearly is not. I don't use one for my ddog. I have a long line for fields and parks that is clipped to his harness and a short lead for pavements and built up areas clipped to his collar and actually the switch of lead is part of his cue to walk nicely. The key is your dog being under control and on an extendable lead is not necessarily under control. She was in the wrong and should have apologised

Willmafrockfit · 21/07/2024 09:48

so dangerous

Anewuser · 21/07/2024 09:49

You are not unreasonable, if I gave her the benefit of doubt, maybe she reacted like that as she was scared or embarrassed. Truth is, she’s an idiot.

Glad your son and his friend are ok.

ThePure · 21/07/2024 09:50

Can't imagine taking my dog on the tube though tbh. He'd be a nightmare. He isn't a suitable dog for urban life. My MIL has a small dog (mini dachshund) and she takes it all kind of places I would never take mine restaurants, shops etc. It's just a different concept of dog ownership to mine.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 21/07/2024 09:51

I would prefer dogs (apart from assistance dogs) not to be on the tube. I was on the Victoria line recently and two dogs suddenly went for each other making me jump out of my skin. Then saw another one on Friday (32 degrees at street level) panting on the tube whilst its idiot owners slopped water on the floor for it to drink. (Which it ignored just leaving a massive puddle for someone to slip on).

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 21/07/2024 09:54

Those extendable leads should be banned. We have a rescue and were advised against getting extendable leads as you have no control over the dog, it might as well not be on a lead.

Tagyoureit · 21/07/2024 09:54

She was completely in wrong and so was the member of staff who ignored the whole thing. The boys could have ended up on the tracks tripping over an extended lead like that. I hope they're OK!

Tartfullodger · 21/07/2024 09:54

I had a woman doing this on the high street completely blocking the whole pathway with her one side of the pavement and the dog the other so nobody could get past. Some people are just oblivious.

LlynTegid · 21/07/2024 09:54

Well looked after and controlled dogs I welcome, indeed if there is one on the tube and I get off before the person I will try to acknowledge this, saying something like 'lovely dog'.

I agree there are some people who should not have dogs, the example at Embankment station is one.

FOJN · 21/07/2024 09:57

I'm a dog owner and I think extendable leads should be banned. I understand there is a place for them but too many owners either don't know how to use them or don't realise what a hazard they are to other people.

I agree, who the hell has an unlocked extendable lead in a relatively confined space and near a tube line.

I'm sure there will be a personal injury case one day which might change things.

Redgreenfroggy · 21/07/2024 10:03

No issue at all with well behaved dogs and owners. They are ok yes just a bit shaken as my son was quite near the track.

Another extendable dog lead hater.

They make users feel they have control over their dog whilst in practice they may have very little.

Redgreenfroggy · 21/07/2024 10:05

the dog was so small it could easy have been stepped on as well. My husband said it so nearly went over the side.

those leads are a nightmare. We were walking on the beach with our very well trained dog off lead but beside us a dog on an extendable lead went for her the owner dropped the lead then grabbed the rope bit between her hand she got a terrible rope burn on her hands, that somehow was our fault!!

vivainsomnia · 21/07/2024 10:12

Did one of the boys kicked the dog? That would indicate that the lead was not the issue but that they were not watching where they were going. In which case, they were at fault.

Willmafrockfit · 21/07/2024 10:12

my dm has a friend who tripped over an extendible lead and broke her hip

There's always one.

vivainsomnia · 21/07/2024 10:12

Sorry, misread. She was indeed an idiot!

Redgreenfroggy · 21/07/2024 10:13

No they both went flying over the lead. But to be honest you don’t expect a small dog to be or dog lead to be between the platform edge and the platform wall. The women was against the wall, the dog was sniffing round the edge of the platform.

I read the dog was OK when it was a misspelling of 'ON'. I typed that I got it wrong as you did.

No need for generalisations.

Yeah, an idiot. Why did she tell the boys off?

timenowplease · 21/07/2024 10:16

I've started to think people do this because they're desperate for some kind of interaction with other people and they're using the dog for that.

If the dog jumps at you they expect you to stop and talk to them. I just blank them now. The amount of times I've been called bitch or similar is quite striking.

Willmafrockfit · 21/07/2024 10:17

that is shocking @timenowplease

NT trust place i go to asks people to exchange the extendible leads for shorter leads
