We are in London at the moment. Can I just say I like dogs and have no issue in general with owners, dogs etc as long as they are well behaved and considerate etc.
Was at the embankment tube station and was walking along the platform with my son and husband. Son was a bit ahead taking to another boy.
Suddenly my son and this lad going flying forward and ended up on a heap and this women starts shouting at them. Turns out her little dog was ok an extendable lead and the dog walked right in front of my son and the other lad. The dog was so near the platform edge. I shout back at the women that on what planet does she think having her dog on an extendable lead on the tube platform was ok. Everyone else is just looking in disbelief. Then member of tube staff just walks past ignoring the issue.

the women picks up her dog and storms off back up the platform.
WTF

Unbelievable. My friend died when she fell into a tube like when a train was coming. Can’t believe this woman’s stupidity

supersop60 · 21/07/2024 10:21

Surely you'd want to keep your dog close for its own safety.
Glad the boys are OK.

Runssometimes · 21/07/2024 10:24

I hate extendable leads. IMHO they are for people who won’t train their dog to walk to heel or recall. She’s been totally unreasonable. I regularly brought my large Labrador dog on the tube and ensured he wasn’t in anyone’s way or a trip hazard, sadly some people are just very entitled. It would have been very dangerous for a partially sighted person as those leads can be hard to see - particularly in a busy area. Dog should be under close control for its own and others’ safety.
Glad to hear the boys are ok, but I’d be furious about this too.

JL690 · 21/07/2024 10:28

The dog owner was in the wrong. I hate these extending leads because many dog owners use them as a token gesture that their dog is under control. I can't believe the number of owners who let their dogs wander across busy cycle paths with these leads, blocking the path and getting upset when cyclists complain.

Priekebejen · 21/07/2024 10:29

YANBU. Hope your son and his friend are okay. Dog owners can be so entitled! Even to the point now where they’re allowed in restaurants and cafes.

Catdoorman · 21/07/2024 10:30

We used an extendable lead on our elderly, slightly deaf dog on beaches and in fields, so she could have some freedom, It was easier to recall her. she always wore a harness and short lead anywhere else, you're just not able to effectively control a dog otherwise. Very recently a friend of mine had to rescue a dog who was being walked by a child using an extendable lead, it had run out into traffic and been hit by a car. It was bruised and crying, but no serious injuries. The child's mother was wandering along behind. My friend explained the dangers of these leads, but honestly it's obvious. I do wonder how the insurance companies would view a claim regarding accidents involving these types of lead.

Perplexed20 · 21/07/2024 10:32

I'm a dog owner. Mu dog sometimes comes with me on the tube.
I hate extendable leads in any situation.

Thelnebriati · 21/07/2024 10:32

YANBU. Some people use their dog to act out against other people in ways they couldn't do themselves.

79Helene · 21/07/2024 10:32

We've never taken ours on the Tube - it's too fraught for them down there, especially the more central you get. And I firmly believe extendable leads should be banned anyway.

Bahhhhhumbug · 21/07/2024 10:34

Dog owner who loves dogs but extendable lead hater here too.
Horrible case a while back in my area where a woman was crossing a zebra crossing with her mini daschund trailing behind her on one. A lorry driver (so therefore in a high cab ) had stopped to let her cross and thought the crossing was clear when she cleared it and proceeded. Killed the little daschund leaving the hysterical woman still holding the handle of the damn lead .Horrific.

paperrocksiscissors · 21/07/2024 10:35

'and was walking along the platform with my son and husband. Son was a bit ahead taking to another boy.'

Youre both in the wrong.

The woman should have the dog on a short lead, but as a Londoner , kids running about on a platform on the tube is DANGEROUS.

Not only is it very easy to lose a child on the underground, its dangerous as hell if they bump into someone and end up on the (electrified) rails!

You should have control of your children on the underground, its not a bloody playground and that dog owner was probably pissed because two boys were charging around on a platform. She , like me, probably lives here, not visiting like you, Londoners do not like children running around on the tube.

crumblingschools · 21/07/2024 10:38

Where does OP say the children were running about @paperrocksiscissors

Willmafrockfit · 21/07/2024 10:39

is @paperrocksiscissors arguing just for the sake of it?

CaraVann · 21/07/2024 10:39

I’m a dog owner, lover and dog walker. I hate extendable leads. There is no control. My friend sadly killed a dog when the owner was paying zero attention and the poor thing leapt out into the road and in front of my friends car. She was devastated.

OneTC · 21/07/2024 10:39

Riding in a dedicated bike lane in the park the other day and I saw a dog on one side of the path, owner on the other side and didn't realise until quite late that they were connected. I was going pretty slow in anticipation of the dog running back to it's owner anyway so I did manage to stop in time but I'm sure lot's of people wouldn't have seen it. And she grumbled at me about looking where I'm going Grin

I also don't get why they're made out of such thin cord now, the ones that were made out of nylon tape at least you could see them easily

Nevergoodenoughforthem · 21/07/2024 10:39

@paperrocksiscissors I think you’ve made a number of assumptions here. The OP doesn’t say her DC was running, she said slightly ahead which is very normal as it’s impossible to walk more than two abreast on most tube stations which you might not be aware of.

Marbledwhite · 21/07/2024 10:40

Some people are so stupid and thoughtless.

A neighbour's dog was killed because of its extendable lead. She did have the lead locked in the short position as she was walking on the narrow pavement beside a busy road, but the dog lunged at another dog across the street, the lead unlocked itself and her dog was run over by a car.

That must have been so traumatic for the lorry driver. There are so many people who use extendable leads on the narrow canal towpath near me. Runners, cyclists, walkers - the lead takes up the whole towpath and sometimes it's hard to see when crowded.

My pet peeve on the tube is owners who let dogs sit in the seats! What's the point of national rail asking people to not put their feet on the seats when dogs do it. It's just gross. Also the really small sausage dogs on extendable leads - seen quite a few of those, saw one on the stairs! When people are rushing down stairs to catch a train who TF can see a tiny dog in a big crowd. Would be like someone leaving their baby to crawl around the platform/station.

Oh come off it, I've got kids, how else could they not see a lead across a relatively short platform?

'Son was a bit ahead with another boy'

So I assume they were walking slowly and discussing world politics and missed the lead in front of them?

Honestly I'm not trolling, I just think no London parent lets their kid be 'a bit ahead' on a platform down the tube, its bloody dangerous.

They weren’t running about, you’ve got yourself all worked up over an imaginary situation.

Goldengirl123 · 21/07/2024 10:43

My sister has these ridiculous leads. Fine if you are in a park but not where people are walking. One of them tripped me up and I broke my wrist. Idiots

Shityshitybangbang · 21/07/2024 10:44

I don’t know how many times I have really ran over a dog with these leads. Owners walking along the pavement and dog jumps on the road. So annoying and dangerous

renoleno · 21/07/2024 10:45

@paperrocksiscissors come off it. A crowded platform - adults don't even see bloody wheelie bags trailing behind. They're not places people are ambling along enjoying the views. The boys can just be walking along in conversation and dogs and leads randomly appear. Extendable lead is like kids running around with no supervision, except the kids here is the dog.

BileBeansSara · 21/07/2024 10:46

I killed a dog on a flexi lead on my way to work in my van. It just ran into the road and went under the back wheels.

They are the devils work.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 21/07/2024 10:48

I HATE extendable dog leads. They shouldn't be sold. Dangerous horrible things. You cannot have cl trol of your dog on an extendable lead. She was completely at fault.

I also love dogs. But am sick of this must take my dog everywhere with me attitude. Your dog is not a child. If my child or I started pissing up every wall and snifffing people in cafes, people would be appalled. Your dog doing it? Yeah that's fine.
