We are in London at the moment. Can I just say I like dogs and have no issue in general with owners, dogs etc as long as they are well behaved and considerate etc.
Was at the embankment tube station and was walking along the platform with my son and husband. Son was a bit ahead taking to another boy.
Suddenly my son and this lad going flying forward and ended up on a heap and this women starts shouting at them. Turns out her little dog was ok an extendable lead and the dog walked right in front of my son and the other lad. The dog was so near the platform edge. I shout back at the women that on what planet does she think having her dog on an extendable lead on the tube platform was ok. Everyone else is just looking in disbelief. Then member of tube staff just walks past ignoring the issue.

the women picks up her dog and storms off back up the platform.
WTF

Dh had cuts and bruises as came off his bike due to a half wit using one of these on a main bike path between two cities at commute time 🙄🙄

@paperrocksiscissors come off it. A crowded platform - adults don't even see bloody wheelie bags trailing behind. They're not places people are ambling along enjoying the views. The boys can just be walking along in conversation and dogs and leads randomly appear. Extendable lead is like kids running around with no supervision, except the kids here is the dog.

Sorry,

A crowded platform , you hit the nail on the head, unless those boys are over say 10, they shouldn't be as OP says 'a bit ahead'.

I don't know if they were walking or running, only OP does, neither do we know how 'bit ahead' they were.

This is my only point, you don't let your kids be 'bit ahead' down Embankment tube. as I said BOTH are at fault, that's all. I'm not defending the dog owner.

wtfissummer · 21/07/2024 10:50

vivainsomnia · 21/07/2024 10:12

Did one of the boys kicked the dog? That would indicate that the lead was not the issue but that they were not watching where they were going. In which case, they were at fault.

WTF🤣🤣🤣

'and was walking along the platform with my son and husband. Son was a bit ahead taking to another boy.'

Youre both in the wrong.

The woman should have the dog on a short lead, but as a Londoner , kids running about on a platform on the tube is DANGEROUS.

Not only is it very easy to lose a child on the underground, its dangerous as hell if they bump into someone and end up on the (electrified) rails!

You should have control of your children on the underground, its not a bloody playground and that dog owner was probably pissed because two boys were charging around on a platform. She , like me, probably lives here, not visiting like you, Londoners do not like children running around on the tube.

Was it a full moon last night?

GreenTeaLikesMe · 21/07/2024 10:54

In Japan you can't take a dog on public transport except in a closed carrier of some kind (carrier or dog pram, or a sling with a mesh top). Except guide dogs, obvs. It's a good rule. And train platforms should all have barriers these days! Platforms with no barriers are very dangerous to blind travelers, not to mention scary for parents with young kids.

Bahhhhhumbug · 21/07/2024 10:34

Dog owner who loves dogs but extendable lead hater here too.
Horrible case a while back in my area where a woman was crossing a zebra crossing with her mini daschund trailing behind her on one. A lorry driver (so therefore in a high cab ) had stopped to let her cross and thought the crossing was clear when she cleared it and proceeded. Killed the little daschund leaving the hysterical woman still holding the handle of the damn lead .Horrific.

The poor driver.

zingally · 21/07/2024 10:57

I suspect the woman's reaction was more out of fear and/or shock.

She could see for herself that she nearly caused a very dangerous accident. Both the two boys AND the dog could very easily have fallen onto the track, and SHE'D have been held responsible.

WorriedRelative · 21/07/2024 10:58

Extendable leads should be banned.

Not only are the dogs not under proper control they are much more difficult to see than a long lead.

My DH nearly came off his bike when some idiots stood to one side of a multi use path and the dog crossed to the other in front of him creating a trip wire. Luckily he was cycling slowly and saw what was going on.

Willmafrockfit · 21/07/2024 11:00

i do have an extendible lead but am very careful

That must have been so traumatic for the lorry driver. There are so many people who use extendable leads on the narrow canal towpath near me. Runners, cyclists, walkers - the lead takes up the whole towpath and sometimes it's hard to see when crowded.

My pet peeve on the tube is owners who let dogs sit in the seats! What's the point of national rail asking people to not put their feet on the seats when dogs do it. It's just gross. Also the really small sausage dogs on extendable leads - seen quite a few of those, saw one on the stairs! When people are rushing down stairs to catch a train who TF can see a tiny dog in a big crowd. Would be like someone leaving their baby to crawl around the platform/station.

Yes it was horrific for all involved ,the driver was devastated but completely exonerated as the woman wasn't looking back or anything to indicate was waiting for her dog just walked across and carried on with the thin cord lead just trailing behind from her hand. She had the handle in her right hand too so the other side to the driver's view of her.
It's a crossing to a beach as well so lots of families about, dreadful.
Also the lock position can fail on them leaving them able to extend if dog bolts. Should be banned.

Poolstream · 21/07/2024 11:02

For the 11 years of our dog’s life I never bought and extendable lead.
They have no place in busy, urban areas.

WHAT?? That's a stretch..(pardon the pun)

Any dog owner using an extendable lead HAS NO CONTROL over their animal.

OhMyGiddyAunt · 21/07/2024 11:04

Extendable leads are a nightmare.

Not long ago I was walking out of a shop doorway into a busy street and, if it weren't for DD who spotted it, would have fallen over an extendable lead that was across the door way!

Dog owner was looking in the shop window on one side of the doorway oblivious to the fact that the dog had wandered off to the other side of the doorway creating a perfect trip wire!

paperrocksiscissors · 21/07/2024 11:04

wtfissummer · 21/07/2024 10:53

Was it a full moon last night?

I take it all back @wtfissummer

Whenever people come to London, let your kids do what they want, let them go ahead on the platform with 630 volts on the live rails just below them, with no barrier to fall onto them.

Whats the worst that could happen?

Halfheadhighlights · 21/07/2024 11:04

These extendable leads are such a nuisance. Another thick entitled dog owner strikes again

WorriedRelative · 21/07/2024 11:05

I know someone who nearly lost some fingers due to an extendable lead. He was walking his dog on one and grabbed the cord part to pull the dog back because another came up to it and was being aggressive. His dog lunged and the cord went through his hand like cheese wire. Horrible injury that required lots of specialist treatment.

Don't use them.

If your dog doesn't have good recall and you want to give it some freedom get a long lead for the park/beach and use a short one everywhere else.

Needmorelego · 21/07/2024 11:08

@paperrocksiscissors if I am on a Tube platform I prefer my daughter to walk AHEAD of me so I can see her.
If she was behind me surely that's more dangerous.

Bunnycat101 · 21/07/2024 11:09

There is a time and a place. Massive open fields are one thing but they just aren’t suitable in an urban environment and especially not the tube. I’m surprised she’s not taken people out before to be honest. Anything long and thin pulled taught near people is always going to be a trip hazard. It’s just common sense (which too many people seem to lack!).

Bromptotoo · 21/07/2024 11:10

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 21/07/2024 09:54

Those extendable leads should be banned. We have a rescue and were advised against getting extendable leads as you have no control over the dog, it might as well not be on a lead.

That, exactly. Lost count of the times I've come close to being offed from my bike in London because doggo decided to go to the full extent of his lead and into the carriageway.

Needmorelego · 21/07/2024 11:11

@paperrocksiscissors also the OP just said "son". He could be 17 🤔

Oh for goodness sake @Needmorelego there's ahead and theres in front of you, don't be facetious

Needmorelego · 21/07/2024 11:13

@paperrocksiscissors what's the difference?
A metre ahead? 2 metres?

Corrag · 21/07/2024 11:13

I disagree that extendable leads should be banned. If used properly they're fine. As usual, it's the idiots that spoil things. User error.

I use an extendable lead but it's only in the free position when it's safe to do so, never when there are other people or cars around.

Needmorelego · 21/07/2024 11:11

My post only refers to primary age kids @Needmorelego , most London parents would be the same.
