We are in London at the moment. Can I just say I like dogs and have no issue in general with owners, dogs etc as long as they are well behaved and considerate etc.
Was at the embankment tube station and was walking along the platform with my son and husband. Son was a bit ahead taking to another boy.
Suddenly my son and this lad going flying forward and ended up on a heap and this women starts shouting at them. Turns out her little dog was ok an extendable lead and the dog walked right in front of my son and the other lad. The dog was so near the platform edge. I shout back at the women that on what planet does she think having her dog on an extendable lead on the tube platform was ok. Everyone else is just looking in disbelief. Then member of tube staff just walks past ignoring the issue.

the women picks up her dog and storms off back up the platform.
WTF

@paperrocksiscissors Im a Londoner as in born & raised so know lots of other Londoners. Also someone who used the tube to get to school from a young age….

Towelmode · 21/07/2024 11:58

Maybe mine are more clever then

Fingers x, they need some luck in life 😆

crumblingschools · 21/07/2024 11:59

@paperrocksiscissors can you point out the bit in the OP’s post where she states the DC were charging about and acting irresponsibly

Longma · 21/07/2024 11:53

Paperrocksiscissors

You do realise that children who are Londoners have 11 year olds using the underground independently on their own, most days.
Doesn't mean they are running around and getting in people's way.

The op makes no mention of age, where they live, that the boys were running or not looking where they are going.

Why have you decided to come up with an imaginary scenario rather than just accept that a dog should not be in an extendable lead in an underground station?

Sigh, MN does love a pile on doesn't it?

OP says 'We are in London at the moment.' which suggest a visitor doesn't it?

The rest is assumption, but certainly valid for kids running, and under 10, guilty as charged, continue pile on, as you were.

Don't they all @Towelmode

Was it a full moon last night?

Apparently.

OP, you are so not being unreasonable. I nearly fell over one yesterday in Stonegate in York thanks to some twat. I’m sure many of us have been to York and can imagine how unsuitable a place for one it was. Nearly as unsuitable as a tube platform.

Needmorelego · 21/07/2024 12:02

I think @paperrocksiscissors is the dog owner and she's upset that her precious Fluffykins got told off.
🤔😂🐩

Willmafrockfit · 21/07/2024 12:09

all leads can fail!
not just extendible leads.

FOJN · 21/07/2024 12:11

paperrocksiscissors · 21/07/2024 10:40

Oh come off it, I've got kids, how else could they not see a lead across a relatively short platform?

'Son was a bit ahead with another boy'

So I assume they were walking slowly and discussing world politics and missed the lead in front of them?

Honestly I'm not trolling, I just think no London parent lets their kid be 'a bit ahead' on a platform down the tube, its bloody dangerous.

You seem to have made up a scenario and angered yourself in the process. OP doesn't say how old the children were or that they were running.

Extendable leads are usually made of very thin cord, typically no thicker than the washing line on a rotary dryer, so quite difficult to see even in good conditions. The dog was small so the lead would have been quite close to the ground.

Some are now made with a high viz flat tape which is about a centimetre in width, this does make them more visible but I haven't seen many in use.

Irridescantshimmmer · 21/07/2024 12:16

She's dog-shit crazy

Well said, she had no control of the dog and did not have the balls to apologise like a decent human being so she put 2 children at risk so yes you were right to call her out on it.

She should be on a short lead with the dog.

FOJN · 21/07/2024 12:18

Willmafrockfit · 21/07/2024 12:09

all leads can fail!
not just extendible leads.

Yes but I can see the entire length of my short lead at a glance and the handle loop and clip loops are double stitched. I can see if it's damaged and unsafe to use. My dog collar had a D ring each side of the plastic clip closure so even if that fails I still have some control and my dog is right next to me instead of metres away.

How many owners regularly pull out the entire length of an extendable lead to check if the cord is frayed or weakened? How many owners extend the lead to dry it after a walk in the rain to prevent the cord rotting? How does the owner check that the knot inside the reel is still secure and not unravelling? How can an owner see if the locking mechanism is still safe? The problem with extendable leads is that you are limited in how much you can do to check they are safe. You would usually only find out it's not when it fails in use.

jasminocereusbritannicus · 21/07/2024 12:34

I use an extendable lead, but I’m in control of it. It’s like driving you have to read the situation ahead and adjust the length accordingly, maybe ‘lock ‘ it on a short length for a while. People who just dont think about those around them are a menace .

TattiePants · 21/07/2024 12:46

You are definitely not being unreasonable. A few months ago I was driving and a woman was walking a dog on the path with an extendable lead. I don’t know if she made a mistake or the lead was faulty but the lead suddenly extended and the dog ran into the road and I hit it. Fortunately it was a glancing blow rather than under the wheels!

ThePure · 21/07/2024 12:52

I have tried to train my dog but he is a rescue flock guardian breed and inherently he is just not as trainable as your average lab. He knows all the commands but it's in his nature to 'operate independently' so sometimes he decides I do not know best. He is 100% loyal but not 100% obedient. I think it is accepted that some dogs are more difficult to have off lead due to prey drive like many beagles, terriers or greyhounds

I therefore find a long line a really useful tool for country walks so he can have some freedom and I can still have control. I always switch to a short lead in urban places, near roads etc.

It is a fixed thick line that I manually reel in and out. I would not use a retractable lead because he is a big dog and it might snap or fail. Plus if we get tangled with the thick line there is not much chance of injury vs the nylon cheese wire ones. It took both of us a while to get used to using it though and in the early days we used to get tangled but both of us have figured it out now.

The main downside of the kind of long line I use is that it can trail on the ground and get wet and muddy in winter and then your hands and clothes get muddy. I just wear crappy old clothes for dog walking and wash them often but I think people use extendable leads because they are easier to handle and don't get dirty.

I think there probably is a time and a place for extendable leads for small dogs in off road areas but I do wish people would understand the limitations and not use them in places where it is unsafe.

marshmallowfinder · 21/07/2024 13:10

Awful and idiotic womAn.

Northumberlandgirl · 21/07/2024 13:21

I hate extendable leads and don’t have one for my dogs. They’re dangerous for those with poor sight as the cord is so thin. They’re dangerous for the dog as it allows them to get up momentum and I’ve seen them snap. I use a long training lead. It has several d rings to enable the user to lengthen or shorten the lead as required. A friend uses an extendable lead on our walks allowing her dog to run around and in front of us. I hate it.

Redgreenfroggy · 21/07/2024 16:58

@paperrocksiscissors
if the boys where any closer to us I would have been tripping over their ankles. It’s a wonder I didn’t go as well. Also you don’t walk around looking at your feet (also would be dangerous on a tube platform).
Would you rather we had been walking 5 of us in a row. Me Dh and our 3 kids and our friends 4 in a row with their 2 kids. Or maybe we could have walked 9 in a row.

Redgreenfroggy · 21/07/2024 16:59

Those extendable leads should be banned. We have a rescue and were advised against getting extendable leads as you have no control over the dog, it might as well not be on a lead.

100% this. They are so dangerous.

Childrenofthestones · 22/07/2024 18:26

The world is full of assholes 😒

FastFood · 22/07/2024 18:36

I hate extendable leads for that reason.
Also, a small dog on busy tube / train platform should be carried.
l have a tiny dog, who walks beautully on the lead and is Very used to public transport, but I always carry him when its busy, it must be super stressful to be caught in a forest of legs.

Packetofcrispsplease · 22/07/2024 18:56

Extendable leads are dangerous , especially in busy areas .
The owners don’t have full control of the dog and it could end up in the road or someone trip over the lead .
I won’t use one I like a fixed lead attached to the back of my dog’s harness

Redgreenfroggy · 22/07/2024 18:57

Hi not sure people are reading this thread now but my friends went on the bus tour today with their kids. We went to the tower as have done the bus tour only a year ago.

She got on the bus with her little dog and was on the top deck at the back letting her dog go to the front on its extendable lead. Sniffing round the stairs.

My friends husband said he had visions of the dog falling down the stairs and hanging on its lead with the women holding the other end on the back of the bus totally oblivious. a women at the front told her to call the dog back but she just said “oh he is friendly”. Er no the point really.

The driver must be able to see up there with a camera or someone getting off told him as one of the guides got on at a stop and told her to either put the dog on her knee or get off the bus. She did as she was told.

bloody small world

Amazing 😅

Extendable leads are for people who didn't train their dogs.

Was at a busy cliff top recently, where people were peering over the edge to look at seals. Already pretty dangerous, as the cliff overhangs in parts and you can't see where from the top. Some absolutely moronic woman had a lively young lab on an extendable lead that was weaving between people. Really thought someone was going to be pulled over and fall down the cliff face.
