Desperate help - passport expired, travel on Wednesday

Nowanextraone · 20/07/2024 19:10

I feel sick. I don't understand how we have overlooked this as we renewed 2 of our other children's passports, but we've just seen our daughter's passport expired in January.

We are fucked aren't we? It says a child's passport can only be renewed urgently in a week.
I feel sick

Insurance won't even pay will it as it's our fault.

Just go, you've made the mistake of talking to somebody. Just make an appointment online, and turn up. Take birt certificates, school reports, anything you have that make it certain she is your daughter. If you don't try you don't get.

That's a poor attitude. I was in the same situation, made an appointment and they had pity. They are not ogres.

No one said they were ogres but they can't just have pity and ignore all the rules because they feel sorry for you. If they just ignored the rules then I'd be very surprised if they weren't all fired.

The simple fact is that children's passport cannot be renewed using the 24 hour option as confirmed by the website, multiple posters and the OP and to say otherwise is just giving others who may read your post false hope.

The OP is doing the right thing and hopefully it will be back soon but it's sometimes best to be realistic about the situation.

Can you get your money back or re-schedule?

KelliandJudi · 21/07/2024 20:44

Kjpt140v · 21/07/2024 20:31

Go to the passport office, you need an appointment. I did the same and had my passport within four hours.

🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

@Kjpt140v
You can’t just turn up. Op has made an appointment. But yes, the advice to take your dd and birth certificate is good. My dd went to her passport appointment and the woman said she struggled to recognise her but accepted it was dd. Dh also took his passport. It was her first adult passport btw, which is also only on a 7 day. As I said upthread applied for on Weds, arrived Fri, 2 weeks ago.

Thank you SO much everyone.
Sadly It's bad news. We spoke to the passport office at 9am and you definitely can't get a child's passport in 1 day. We've got an appointment tomorrow morning for the 1 week priority renewal but obviously won't be ready for our holiday. The flight doesn't leave until late Wednesday evening, so we won't cancel it until Wednesday's post arrives just in case there is a teeny chance.

We are going to have to lick our wounds and organise a cheap get away in a few weeks time.

2024 has included the death of my lovely MIL, our child being diagnosed with a lifelong very serious condition, our house sale and purchase falling through and now this. I really do want 2024 to fuck off.

I know this was my fault, and I literally can't believe we overlooked it, especially when we renewed the other passports 😢

We haven't told our daughter it's her passport as she's a sensitive little girl. We've told her it is an issue with the hotel so we need to change it 😬 We've said we are sorting her passport out tomorrow because it doesn't have long left on it.

If there’s any way both you and your partner can attend the appointment (with your passports for ID to show it’s nothing dodgy), I’d tell them all this and absolutely beg if there’s any way it could be expedited and you can collect in person rather than via post: to guarantee you get it. There are official positions and then human kindness and sometimes if you really plead your case politely, they might be able to make an exception, even if it’s bending the official rules. Failing that, how much would it cost to move your flights back a few days (or for one of you to and the other go ahead with other kids). Looks like others have got it on day 4.

Are you a child?

OneSugar1 · 21/07/2024 21:11

Is rescheduling the holiday a possibility to next summer instead?

SoSoller · 21/07/2024 21:17

Just an idea, but can you travel to Ireland without a passport?

GrazingSheep · 21/07/2024 21:19

What good would traveling to Ireland do?

SoSoller · 21/07/2024 21:20

They would still get to go on a family holiday, abroad (if they can afford that)

QuackQuackFuckThat · 21/07/2024 21:24

Don’t loose hope OP, it’s good that you have the appointment. Of course they can’t make promises but hopefully they can rush it through 🤞

This @Nowanextraone It’s a long shot given the official stance you’ve been told over the phone but there’s also still a chance on the day that you might find a more flexible/sympathetic approach from the person you see. There’s absolutely no harm in trying everything at this point!
wishing you lots and lots of luck

bluebeck · 21/07/2024 21:27

Wouldn’t it make more sense for one of you to travel with other DC and you book two extra flights when PP arrives?

You would lose less money that way surely and everyone gets a holiday.

Worse case scenario- one adult and one child goes on holiday, the other adult and daughter await the passport, so halving your losses is possible straightaway. Can do a little smoke and mirrors to explain this to your daughter. Once the passport arrives, check out price of flights and book as long as not horribly expensive.

Paul2023 · 21/07/2024 21:34

OP- maybe contact the holiday company first thing tomorrow and ask them how much it would be move the holiday dates? Explaining everything to them , they may be able to do it and it might not be as expensive as you may think.
If this is workable, then you wouldn’t have to worry about the passport arriving on time.

Perhaps the company will be understanding of the situation?

CalmConfident · 21/07/2024 21:41

Ok, I managed this once thanks to the lovely people at Newport passport office. You need to get an emergency appointment, BOTH parents need to attend in person. Take every bit of documentation you have including you marriage cert, all both certs, evidence of your holidays dates and destination, all passports, address id and then beg!!!! The longer timeframe for kids is to protect against parental out of country without permission .

CalmConfident · 21/07/2024 21:43

Do all this at your appointment tomorrow and they MIGHT take pity on you and help. Again….both parents must go and take everything single scrap of documentation you have and hope xxxx it’s totally their discretion for be super polite, patient and hope

CalmConfident · 21/07/2024 21:45

have photos done and certified as well by someone before you go to appointment. Take non signed ones too. I had to get a child out of bed in PJs…we realised when doing online check in due ski trip.

CalmConfident · 21/07/2024 21:45

Birth certificates too!!

CalmConfident · 21/07/2024 21:47

Good luck OP 🤞

Greenqueen40 · 21/07/2024 21:47

I don't understand why your DH and other child can't go as planned and you follow as soon as the passport is ready? Worse case scenario would be friday which means you only miss 2 days of your holiday, 5 days is better than nothing!

pollymere · 21/07/2024 21:57

This happened to a friend of mine. They had to drive to where an appointment was available and possibly stay overnight but they got the passport sorted in time. Ring them first thing on Monday and be flexible about where you can drive to in order to sort it out.

TTCournumberthree · 21/07/2024 21:59

i have everything crossed for you that it can by some chance arrive by Wednesday. It isn’t impossible, I’ve used the childs fast track service everytime for my kids and it’s never taken a week. Quickest was 2 working days and the longest was 4

Reallyquitejaded · 21/07/2024 22:04

Could you sell the holiday? That would give you some money for another break. You would need check whether names can be changed and to allow time to change names on bookings
