To have a glass of wine while pregnant?

Third trimester, I know it's not recommended but ... really fancy a glass of wine. Would you?

OP posts:

Very occasionally in my last pregnancy. I worked out how much 1 unit was and that’s what I had 😂

Edingril · 21/07/2024 10:49

No and if I need to ask I would know the answer is no in the first place

AlmaCogansFrockFan · 21/07/2024 11:49

To Begs the Question, thanks for your concern, no damage caused, I was a sensible drinker as an adult.

@MidnightPatrol alcohol crosses the placenta and enters the baby's bloodstream.
I just wonder how many posters who say it's fine would be happy to give their baby a bit of wine once born? You wouldn't would you. So why expose your baby to it when pregnant?!

This makes no sense. Once the baby is born, it should only be fed milk. So should the OP stick to drinking milk only while pregnant. Don't be silly.

TheKeatingFive · 21/07/2024 11:54

when people are saying show us the research to say one drink doesn’t do harm, remember it is difficult to do direct studies…..because it’s unethical! unethical to ask a mother to consume alcohol for research when we don’t know the effects on the baby. We know alcohol isn’t good for you, we know the negative effects it has on the body sonorous can’t ask women to participate and voluntarily pass this to babies blood.

There should then, be clear macro data that shows differences in outcomes pre and post recommendations changing. Or comparing outcomes in different countries with different recommendations.

This data never seems to materialise either.

I would order a small glass and have a few mouthfuls of it for the taste only. In third trim the placenta is sharing what’s in your blood with them so I wouldn’t have more than that . But it’s all about your personal risk tolerance.

A glass of wine won’t likely do anything but medically it’s not no risk, so up to you. Just coz others do it doesn’t make it no risk, so it’s a personal decision.

i had a real craving for red wine in my 3rd trim. However when I eventually got a glass it tasted like metal!! So my body was saying no. It might be you don’t like it after a few mouthfuls!

It makes no sense if you don't understand how body processes food as opposed to alcohol. Alcohol is absorbed into your blood which you share with the baby. The effect on the baby's blood alcohol is no different than if it had drank the wine. Chips are not absorbed into your blood as chips. It's not like feeding the baby chips.

Goldusty · 21/07/2024 12:09

Fgs that you even have to ask this question shows that you can't care enough about the possible effects this could have on your baby. And for what? Is it worth it?!

It doesn't show that at all. Get a grip.

Yet there is zero evidence that one small glass of wine has any ill effects.

It does make sense. Food is turned into energy which then goes into the mother's blood and to the baby. It doesn't matter what food it is is the same process.
However alcohol as a psychoactive substance can pass to the baby and impact them. It's the same with pharmaceutical drugs which is why we caution on which ones can be taken during pregnancy.

Krumblina, you are wasting your time trying to educate the 'stupid'

Ok Dr Keating

Are you disputing this? Or just diverting with what you imagine is a clever/funny comment?

I am. A PhD thanks.

Ok Dr Keating

So after being judgemental and sanctimonious, you’re now mocking people who disagree with you when they state fact?

Me too! So the Dr Keating comment is not quite the burn the poster might think 😂

Mercurial123 · 21/07/2024 12:43

No I wouldn't.

Does that "stupid" include all of the medical professionals and research scientists who say that one glass in the third trimester (and two in the second) does no harm?

I think it's the classic 'everyone who doesn't agree with me is stooopid' response.

orangeleopard · 21/07/2024 13:06

Not sure why people can’t just not drink whilst pregnant. Why would you risk it, for what reason? There’s no ‘safe’ amount, and I think it’s very selfish that people are willing to put their baby at risk.
