Posh accents on men are just awful

I’m talking Made in Chelsea type accents. For some reason there is a sex bias to this as they sound much better on females (wonder why this is).

I went to a private school in Berkshire so know my accent would potentially sound posh but to me (and most in the south) it is very bog standardly middle class.

Just curious if I’m the only who secretly thinks this? Got a voice note off of a guy I met on hinge and sadly the Pliny* accent killed the entire thing.

*plumy

Im not saying this to offend. I’m just curious why I recoil and if anyone experiences similar

This is just a personal opinion. I’m just putting it out as a random thought. If you’re going to take offence, then I think that’s a bit silly. Humans have irrational responses and I’m just sharing mine

What do you mean by ‘posh’, anyway? Ordinary RP? Or the kind of accent that was ‘BBC English’ decades ago?
Even the Royals only speak fairly standard RP nowadays. Well, except for Charles - he’s a bit more ‘cut glass’ than the younger ones.

CheeryUser · 20/07/2024 14:48

I quite like it!!

CremeEggThief · 20/07/2024 14:48

YANBU to have an opinion but YABU to state it as a fact.🙄

BatshitCrazyWoman · 20/07/2024 14:49

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/07/2024 14:25

And plumy? Sounds like something to do with feathers.

I think plumy = feathery 🪶 'Plummy' perhaps?

I literally say this is all just my opinion in my first post. And in my second post I reinforce the fact this is an opinion

But in the 10th century.

I'm sure I read somewhere he was descended from Bessie Blount or her family?

Plummy wasn’t being accepted by my phone so thought it was wrong.

You sound jealous.

I get a bit cross when people accuse women of being “jealous”. No one says that men are jealous, only women. What is it that the OP is jealous of?

I don’t love this thread - I think that disliking a particular accent is a bit weird. Is it more acceptable to dislike a posh accent than a Geordie one? If the OP had said she didn’t like men with Geordie accents, she would have been ripped apart.

BasiliskStare · 20/07/2024 14:54

I actually don't think the Made in Chelsea chaps have genuinely posh accents. I do find them hard to listen to because of the amounts of "like" and " mate"

NervousSubject · 20/07/2024 14:54

Croufer · 20/07/2024 14:51

Plummy wasn’t being accepted by my phone so thought it was wrong.

That’s disappointing, OP. I was genuinely imagining a Mountbatten with a mouthful of grouse feathers.

Agree an UC accent has to be deep and not too clipped: the most attractive thing about Boris is his voice

Erghhhh you are joking his acent is horrible.

Yes. He’s not a descendant of Bessie, but one of her relatives, I gather.

See I like King Charles'' accent. And Jacob Rees Mogg for that matter.

I cringe at the cockney/ estuary English that surrounds me a lot of the time lol

DonttouchthatLarry · 20/07/2024 15:04

Can't agree - Theo James' accent in 'The Gentlemen' is much more appealing to me than Vinnie Jones'.

Zanatdy · 20/07/2024 15:05

I really like a posh accent on a guy

Robodog · 20/07/2024 15:13

I follow the BBC archive and it struck me how, generally, voices were much nicer 50+ years back independent of region or class. More sing-songy and everyone is soft-spoken, almost whispering.

Me too. I have an RP accent myself. No idea about Made in Chelsea accents, I've never seen it.

ShinyPebble32 · 20/07/2024 15:20

I’m with you OP! There’s an absolutely 10/10 hunky dad on my school run, looks like he spends all day in the gym. He’s always in casual clothing so for some reason I imagined him with a regional accent, but heard him speaking the other day and he was really posh - put me right off 🤣

My husband's posh accent drives me insane.

Every conversation is like a job interview because he is so formal.

Sad

It's actually causing problems with our children, they cannot relax around him; whereas I'm more "well sweetie, how's it going?" and the children can reply saying "awk ok mum, I'm knackered, gonna chill for a bit."

My husband would be more: "Charles darling, how did your day treat you?" And expects a response like "yes, it was fine dad, thank you. I am extremely tired now though and might considering going upstairs for a little rest."

Kills me Sad my husband still shakes hands with his parents. Different upbringing, I'm a feral rat compared to them.

This is just plain weird. It's not like you didn't have prior notice of how he speaks before you married and had children with him.
Causing problems with your children... 🤯

Still hanging around patiently waiting to find out where “Pliny accent” came from…

Presumably he speaks Latin with a posh accent?

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 20/07/2024 15:31

I like it, I also went to boarding school but then I married a man from a London council estate (it didn't last) who was the exact opposite. I'd pick posh man happy in his own skin, over chip on the shoulder council estate man.

Leanmeansmitingmachine · 20/07/2024 15:42

They just sound normal?!

snowballsintheoven · 20/07/2024 15:56

To answer the curious PPs:

He's getting worse as he gets older. I have managed to get him to say "fuck" once per month but he looks terribly pained.

I do like him. I swear. But as he gets older he's getting more introverted and rod up arse-ish.

He's a senior Civil Servant and he reaches out to people. He once told me I could have a new car when "resources allow it."

He also told me during sex that he loved to feel me "expand." I don't think we've had sex since. Horrific.

PollyPeachum · 20/07/2024 15:56

I have a friend who has very similar accent to the late Queen's formal voice.
Every word carefully enunciated, even when she was angry, (a bit fiery as teenager). It was from her family, I met her DM And DGM.

I say, @Croufer old gel, what is this plumy Pliny accent you post of?

I'm rather fond of my fellow Old Estonian, Rees-Moggy.

He’s from Estonia??? 😲😲😲 🤭
