Posh accents on men are just awful

I’m talking Made in Chelsea type accents. For some reason there is a sex bias to this as they sound much better on females (wonder why this is).

I went to a private school in Berkshire so know my accent would potentially sound posh but to me (and most in the south) it is very bog standardly middle class.

Just curious if I’m the only who secretly thinks this? Got a voice note off of a guy I met on hinge and sadly the Pliny* accent killed the entire thing.

*plumy

Im not saying this to offend. I’m just curious why I recoil and if anyone experiences similar

This is just a personal opinion. I’m just putting it out as a random thought. If you’re going to take offence, then I think that’s a bit silly. Humans have irrational responses and I’m just sharing mine

The made in Chelsea accent is awful on the women and the men. Its affected vocal fry is dreadful.

A proper upper class accent is nice when it's natural and not put on.

Vocal fry is absolutely hideous.

Makes me want to get an oil can and smooth out their vocal folds to remove the grating, dry rasping sound.

This is a severe vocal fry.

I known what you mean, in that we like what we like. I find Northern accents attractive, ie Yorkshire, Northern Northumberland and Scottish. I don't like a southern working class accent as I don't like the Geezer types. I like a well spoken Southerner or Midlander but hate fake accents.

People take the piss out of Essex accents all the time.

Just relax. You can have slightly spicy opinions without being a terrible person.

Not everything needs to Uber politically correct.

Just a light hearted musing.

Oh it’s the ‘it’s just banter’ brigade who think they can be incredibly rude to or about others and then pass it off as lighthearted fun if people disagree with them 🙄 if you’re going to be bitchy, at least own it.

ElleintheWoods · 20/07/2024 13:57

Tongue in cheek obviously.

But depends on the whole package. The accent alone isn’t off-putting for me, but I know some men that have quite a deep, formal voice to go with it, wear an old-fashioned suit and talk about being around ‘the right kind of chaps’ in a private members club in the City. Sounds cliche but they still very much exist!

I don’t have an issue per se but couldn’t be attracted to someone like that.

General well-spoken and proper sentences/ vocabulary is much preferred though. But I’m also a sucker for regional accents, well-spoken with hints of a regional accent certainly does it for me.

Yes. Yes indeed. 🤣

Edited

Some Northern accents are lovely. Yorkshire...{Ok, it's a big County- but some lovely accents there}

Sure this thread has bitchy undertones. That’s okay.

If you’re comfortable being bitchy, then good for you.

Yes because I’m an adult with thick skin. I’m not saying we should round up every Xander and Barnaby and shoot them. Their accents go through me. That is all.

I don't think it would be the accents which would make me unable to get through Made In Chelsea tbh. There aren't many accents I dislike, but the posh public schoolboy one isn't one of them.

Willmafrockfit · 20/07/2024 14:05

i was listening to Jason Watkins,
such a great voice

Willmafrockfit · 20/07/2024 14:06

TheShellBeach · 20/07/2024 14:07

Anton Lesser.

I could have sex with his voice.

Beckypl · 20/07/2024 14:07

How shallow.

That’s fair enough, but then you have to accept others saying they think you’re being unpleasant and not say that everyone else should just accept it because it’s ‘lighthearted’. You can share your opinions and others can tell you they think you’re being bitchy and unkind by calling other people ‘awful’ for something they can’t help.

And no, I’m not posh, I’m an Essex girl.

Beckypl · 20/07/2024 14:07

Also 😴

WhodoVoodoo · 20/07/2024 14:08

How posh are we talking? Captain James posh or Jacob RM?

Yes people can be shallow. News Flash.

I get it OP. I have RP, none of my boyfriends or neither of my husbands have anything remotely near the same accent.

I think it is biological, I am just attracted to other, so I have a better spread of genes 🤣

That's my excuse. And is science! ( in my head)

I think it can sound like an anachronism in todays world but frankly if he’s a lovely bloke, looks good, massive etc etc then I think I could get over that

It's all about tone, not about accent. I remember when I worked in radio there was loads of research done that proved people like deep voices, not high-pitched ones. If you played people a tape of Ringo Starr or Michael Angelis speaking they would say they liked Scouse accents. If you played them one of Sonia, not so much.
