Posh accents on men are just awful

I’m talking Made in Chelsea type accents. For some reason there is a sex bias to this as they sound much better on females (wonder why this is).

I went to a private school in Berkshire so know my accent would potentially sound posh but to me (and most in the south) it is very bog standardly middle class.

Just curious if I’m the only who secretly thinks this? Got a voice note off of a guy I met on hinge and sadly the Pliny* accent killed the entire thing.

*plumy

Im not saying this to offend. I’m just curious why I recoil and if anyone experiences similar

This is just a personal opinion. I’m just putting it out as a random thought. If you’re going to take offence, then I think that’s a bit silly. Humans have irrational responses and I’m just sharing mine

You sound jealous.

twohotwaterbottles · 20/07/2024 13:21

I'm from Yorkshire and love a posh accent. It does it for me 😂

Or an Irish accent. Any Irish accent.😍

Croufer · 20/07/2024 13:23

I love an Irish accent (ROI) on a man and a Cumbrian accent

I prefer it to the "nah innit" brigade but neutral is better.

I can't stand it from anyone but I guess it's not necessarily their fault.

The worst imo is an affected posh accent put on by a social climber. It's usually a bit too breathy and a little too high. Quite funny to notice though.

I think what you describe as an affected accent is what I don’t like.

For example Prince William’s, okay it’s not my favourite accent, but it doesn’t sound as bad as some of the guys on MIC who do have the high voice that you mentioned. Which I literally can’t watch.

How could you say that? Our Yorkshire is far superior 🤣.

You sound posh 😂

I can just tell...

Tulip2478 · 20/07/2024 13:36

I don't like any southern English accents at all (apart from some in the South West) but that's just my opinion, it's not like anybody can help it!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 20/07/2024 13:37

I have dated three men from Yorkshire, none with a broad accent, but I love it. Can't stand an estuary English accent. 'Posh' I can take or leave

I often get accused of 'being posh' but I'm just well spoken (born and brought up in the Home Counties). Some men seem to really go for it 😂😂

ACynicalDad · 20/07/2024 13:38

Make this about working class men and it’s seen as abhorrent… so unnecessary.

LordPercyPercy · 20/07/2024 13:40

My husband's posh accent drives me insane.

I feel a bit sorry for him. He could have married someone who actually appreciates him for who he is, and had children he could relate to.

Inthemosquitogarden · 20/07/2024 13:40

Dh has a posho accent, main difficulty is when he talks about “pulling the door to” [shutting the door”], “deyuuuuuvet” [duvet] and “rum” which it took me a while to twig was “room”. But I think I prefer it to someone who drops their h’s.

My husband's posh accent drives me insane.

Every conversation is like a job interview because he is so formal.

Sad

It's actually causing problems with our children, they cannot relax around him; whereas I'm more "well sweetie, how's it going?" and the children can reply saying "awk ok mum, I'm knackered, gonna chill for a bit."

My husband would be more: "Charles darling, how did your day treat you?" And expects a response like "yes, it was fine dad, thank you. I am extremely tired now though and might considering going upstairs for a little rest."

Kills me Sad my husband still shakes hands with his parents. Different upbringing, I'm a feral rat compared to them.

@snowballsintheoven how on earth did you get as far as married & children?

Theothername · 20/07/2024 13:42

I don’t particularly mind accents - they are what they are - but I have to concentrate quite hard not to mimic them unconsciously. I’m not even a good mimic, so it sounds like a pisstake.

Turophilic · 20/07/2024 13:45

How about Samuel West? Is that sufficiently posh? I think his voice is lovely. Also Alan Rickman, Matthew Macfadyen, Hugh Laurie, Henry Cavil, Damien Lewis...

Dahlietta · 20/07/2024 13:45

Surely @snowballsintheoven was taking the piss?

GoldfishSoup · 20/07/2024 13:50

Threeweeksold · 20/07/2024 13:05

They don’t sound any better on women.

What an unpleasant thing to say. It’s a perfectly fine accent on men and women.

Dahlietta · 20/07/2024 13:45

I really hope so. Her poor husband if not.

Mu ine who got away was a Sheffield lad- thise flat vowels make me go weak- get in !

Croufer · 20/07/2024 13:53

People take the piss out of Essex accents all the time.

Just relax. You can have slightly spicy opinions without being a terrible person.

Not everything needs to Uber politically correct.

Just a light hearted musing.
