to think this isn't art?

In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery, and starved him to death. For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died.

But this is not all... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the 'installation' was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008.

PLEASE HELP STOP HIM.

It's free of charge, there is no need to register, and it will only take 1 minute to save the life of an innocent creature.

that's sick - if you do that to a pet, you're arrested with the RSPCA and everyone on your back... why is it different for him? Bastard

PersephoneSnape · 12/04/2008 20:31

i saw that on myspace - thats absolutely bloody hideous. I try to make the occasional £ from painting ( obviously far more traditional) and whilst I can appreciate the irony of modern or situational art there is no excuse for what happened to that poor creature or for the art establishment metaphorically wanking all over it in appreciation.

part of the deal in being human is that you are gracious towards animals that do not have the good old opposable thumbs. If you feel teh need to eat them, then you treat them as well as possible - if you have pets you don't mistreat them and if you profess to be an artist you don't tie them up and let them starve to death in some pretentious 'look at me, aren't i symbolic' piece of ego stroking.

Wiki seems unsure whether these claims are true. Here's what the Guardian has to say. It's obviously not clear quite what happened.

"Juanita Bermúdez, directora de Galería Códice, afirma que como persona seria no permitiría el maltrato al animal. La directora afirmó que el perro comió en reiteradas ocasiones y que no murió, si no que se fugó durante la madrugada."

VictorianSqualor · 12/04/2008 20:53

In English Cod?

VictorianSqualor · 12/04/2008 20:54

(I can kind of gather it says no harm came to the dog)

winebeforepearls · 12/04/2008 20:56

'[the dog] had not died ... but had escaped from the gallery during the night' - yeah right.

winebeforepearls · 12/04/2008 20:59

Either the artist's a really sick puppy or he's manufactured this controversy as part of his 'art'

TheCoderator · 12/04/2008 20:59

oh tis a dog
get a life

Twiglett · 12/04/2008 21:04

the director said that nobody is allowed to harm animals in the gallery. the dog ate and didn't die.

ib · 12/04/2008 21:04

"Juanita Bermudez, director of Codice gallery, affirms that as a serious person she would not allow the animal to be mistreated. The director affirmed that the dog ate on several occasions and did not die, it ran away during the early morning."
