We NEED air-conditioning

I'm wide awake and have partially stripped off. All the windows are open but there is no air.

I said to DH that we need AC! I don't care that we only get heat for about three days a year. This perimenopausal woman can't cope! Right now I'd be willing to remortgage our house to pay for it 😂

Forget all the fans, go straight for a mobile air con unit. We have a delonghi which was about £500 but it works brilliantly. Hose out of the window, on full and it’s amazing.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 21/07/2024 20:29

Dyson fan works fine for me.

CrazyCatMom · 21/07/2024 21:46

Portable AC unit! I’ve been talking about getting one for years, but this year we have our 4m DS (aka precious firstborn) and I decided our room was far too warm (28°C) for him in mini heatwave a few weeks ago and splashed out.

Best £150 I’ve ever spent! But will need to get another one for when he goes into his own room cos I’m not giving it up next year 😂❄️

Ive seen hoses hanging out of windows here so if its good enough for my neighbours its good enough for me!

@JenniferBooth honestly they are a godsend. We have had our moneys worth out of ours and even hubbie and little ones love it.

Thin wool duvet and mattress cover. Way less sweaty than regular bedding. Wear loose linen during the day.

Know I'm going to sound mean here but it's just a bit of discomfort a few nights a year. People in this country seem to want to live in 100% comfort all of the time. I'm not even an eco-warrior but it seems a bit spoiled to want to use even more resources just to avoid a bit of mild discomfort.

Errrr, we have a massive global warming problem on our planet. Sponge yourselves down, sleep on the floor, do something that doesn't inflict further grief on our fragile world for a few hot days a year!!!!

Ceiling fans! I am in Australia but barely turn on my air con over summer because of them. Way cheaper and use a lot less electricity

I'm in NZ and have discovered that unless it is very hot I can just use the air con unit on fan, rather than cool, and it does the trick. I've even slept in the chair under it a couple of times! I don't think I've ever seen a ceiling fan in a house here.

I wouldn't have thought air con was worth it for the few hot days the UK gets.

JenniferBooth · 21/07/2024 23:06

The contradiction on this thread is stark One minute we are told to expect more hot summers and milder winters
Until we suggest air conditioning then its only "a few hot days a year"
Which is it? It cant be both

There have been loads of bloody heatwaves but not much snow The most recent here was one week of snow in December 2022

If my 74 year old DH slept on the floor he wouldnt be able to get up again.

So how long and hot has your summer been this year then? I'm not in the UK, you definitely get far less hot/warm/sunny days than we do here.

<sigh>

certain organisations need to start using their common sense. Doing gas safety checks when its 30c so the bloody heating has to be switched on. When flats like mine are like a fucking sauna. Ours is due on Monday. Thank fuck we are capped. Our choice

There is only one entrance AND exit to this shithole and that leads out to the communal hallway which is concrete and a lot cooler and YES i have seriously considered sleeping out there. despite the ex offender downstairs The stairs then lead out to the main door which yet again is the only entrance and exit. Do you really need to be told about cavity wall insulation and how that has turned some homes into sweatboxes. My housing association has put loads of it into our walls. They get funding for it. ££££ Contractors get ££££ We have black cladding BLACK cladding Soaks up the heat. Other estates ive been to have white. The flats here are over insulated and over heated.
Im not staying a sweaty mess just to please others especially when im hated by many on here for being a social housing tenant.
My fridge freezer really struggles in the tiny galley kitchen in the summer. No problem with it in the winter. Because the kitchen is so small everything is so close together. oh and in 2020 they replaced the roof which is also black

And are your places built for it

JenniferBooth · 21/07/2024 23:32

It also takes days for this sweatbucket to cool down after a heatwave is over

Harmonypus · 21/07/2024 23:36

Post-menopausal, heat intolerant woman with MS here. I've got 3 portable AC units that sit on either side and at the bottom of my bed whenever the temperature hits 25⁰C.

I started out with one AC unit about 10 years ago and have added the other two in subsequent years.

I'm now looking at buying another couple for in the lounge because atm, if the weather warms up, I'm confined to my bed, so if I've got some AC in the lounge, I'll be able to spend time downstairs as well.

I couldnt go into my living room until 3pm this afternoon

The emissions from running aircon units will exasperate climate change, causing the need for more aircon units. Essentially they are self replicating

MouseofCommons · 21/07/2024 23:41

No we don't. Air con creates more global warming. It's rarely that hot in this country tbh. And I've been through menopause and still liked the hot weather.

Blackout blinds and curtains keep out a lot of heat.

Does that only apply to us Brits or other countries too.

Yep the menopause is deffo the same for every woman And curtains do nothing when you rent off an HA that turns the place into a sweatbucket so they can get funding and contractors get ££££

Everyone, which makes the global situation even more precarious

QuestionableMouse · 22/07/2024 00:05

I just use a big fan on the windowsil to suck in cooler air. Works well!

So Dubai and Saudi Arabia often get lectured told this?

No they don't, they control a huge amount of oil production which makes them immune to lectures and essentially untouchable on the global stage.

Harmonypus · 22/07/2024 00:16

I've got blackout blinds and curtains at every door and window, and I still struggle with any heat.
I'm regularly seen out walking my dog in jeans and a t-shirt in the snow, and so many people ask me every year "aren't you freezing dressed like that?", and my response is that I'm actually quite warm. I've also got an ice making machine running all year round.
Yes, being post-menopausal affects my internal temperature gauge, but my biggest problem is the heat intolerance caused by MS, and I've been struggling with that for 47 years, I only did menopause a few years ago.
I've learnt that I have to do whatever I can to keep my body from shutting down due to overheating.

Wonkywillba · 22/07/2024 04:17

I've been contemplating getting a portable air con unit as I'm now on 2 medications that mess with body temp regulation as a side effect and I'm so intolerant to heat.
It's already a stressful mission every time we have a hot spell, waking as early as possible to get as cool air to flow through with fans at the windows. Then it's shut the windows and block out the sun before it heats the place up again, then it may stay reasonable cool till late afternoon. Usually on the evening of the hottest night some arsehole nearby will decide to have a fire so you can't open the windows till late.

The problem is when it doesn't drop below 20c overnight and have a couple of hot days in a row the building holds the heat so would prefer a reliable way to help reduce inside temp, I don't think I'd need to run air con for long if continue with my usual measures. If you insulate the unit hose and the window gap to reduce warming air back in the room it shouldn't need to work as hard, apparently the dual hose are more efficient but these aren't easily available in UK at least. If I didn't rent i'd try ceiling fans and would prefer an outdoor unit that also offers heating in winter which works like a heat pumps so fairly efficient. Unfortunately I'm not on ground floor as I think it would help a lot to cover the outside of the windows at the rear with reflective sun shade fabric so the window pane doesn't heat up at all.
