We NEED air-conditioning

I'm wide awake and have partially stripped off. All the windows are open but there is no air.

I said to DH that we need AC! I don't care that we only get heat for about three days a year. This perimenopausal woman can't cope! Right now I'd be willing to remortgage our house to pay for it 😂

Anyone know how much it costs to have proper AC fitted to a room or 2?

We have a mobile unit that is brilliant but a bit of a faff with the ventilation, I've not dug it out yet this year, because the heat has been infrequent and in short bursts fans have sufficed. Looks like it'll cool again now so won't get it out today!

ours was around 8k. Four large rooms, two outside units which are somewhat overpowered so we can add more indoor units if we want, medium complexity for the ducting and wiring.

I found quotes per room varied from around 1k for a midrange unit with simple back to back installation (indoor unit on same external wall as outside unit), up to about 3k for very complex systems with all the bells and whistles and new electric board ect.

not so lovely for your neighbours that you are heating up the air outside you window on an already hot night, is it.

This really makes me laugh. Given the volume of my bedroom vs the outside, even if everyone had AC you’d possibly heat up the outdoors by about 0.00001 degrees!

Lifeinlists · 20/07/2024 16:50

@JenniferBooth
We have black cladding BLACK cladding Soaks up the heat.

Yes, my son's block is the same. Who designs these apartment blocks with so little thought for the people who actually live there? And what are planning committees doing approving them? I have my own theories about the latter.

So air con it will have to be.

Packetofcrispsplease · 20/07/2024 16:58

It definitely helps if you can stop the sun reaching the windows !
external shades are the best !
we have one at the back of our house and pull it across on sunny warm days .

YY @Lifeinlists When ive visited friends on other estates and they have same or similar cladding its white.

Lorrymum · 20/07/2024 17:03

Apparently roofs should now be painted white. They reflect over 80% of sunlight and reduces indoor temperatures.

JustBeenSleeping · 20/07/2024 17:08

Thank you everyone for your good advice. AC would definitely be a last resort for us as we can't justify the cost for the few hot days and nights that we get in the year. True to form the weather has also cooled down considerably today so I expect tonight will be better. We can always rely on the great British weather to turn on us!

It's good to know about the different options though and to be honest I'm quite surprised that a fair few MNers do have AC at home. I didn't think it was really a thing in the UK.

We have AC and it’s game changing. On for at least 5 months a year to cool and we sometimes use it for heating rooms quickly in the winter.
The cost of 1 wall mounted unit was less than most people spend on a decent sofa.

Interestingly the AIBU is exactly 50/50 right now!

Agreed. They're excellent security as well.

But so many councils won't even begin to consider planning permission for them.

Then whats needed is removable ones that you just use in summer ? Keeping the sun out of the house is the key to keeping it cool. Ive often thought of making one to try it out. You see it a lot in other countries……..

TheBirdintheCave · 20/07/2024 17:16

MigGirl · 20/07/2024 04:32

We have ceiling fans, have had for years. While not AC they make a huge difference, the difference between being able to sleep and not sleep when it's hot in the summer.

Yep! I practically worship ours.

Diyextension · 20/07/2024 17:17

we just use fans…… my air con in the car ran out of gas 7 years ago and ive never bothered getting it done ……….i just put the windows down

lollydu · 20/07/2024 17:34

A good nights sleep is priceless. We have one of the AC tower units, it was about £300 and well worth the money. I don't care if it's only 2 or 3 nights use a year, they last many years and some summers we use it a lot and like this one last night was the first night it came out and will probably be the last!

Toastghost · 20/07/2024 17:43

We’ve got it in the bedrooms. No regrets, I love it. Will enjoy the summers a lot more now I know I can get a comfortable nights sleep.

I had a portable one (a Meaco) and it was so noisy even on the quietest setting, it was useless to me. I’d have a terrible nights sleep if it was in the room.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11089999/Heatwave-woe-housing-association-tells-families-garden-furniture-fire-risk.html

The restrictions are being applied by the Apna Ghar housing association to residents of properties equipped for the disabled, and will make coping with heat even harder.
An agent sent to visit householders wanted to take photographs of a paddling pool one family had in their back garden for their disabled son, as well as a parasol – and claimed they would need permission, as they could be flammable.

Among those affected is the family of NHS manager Brian Leveson, 54, who lives with his civil servant wife Suzanne in a three-bed maisonette with Zack, 17, and daughter Dottie, 18, in Tottenham, north London.
Mr Leveson said: ‘An agent from the housing association last week told us that our garden parasol was flammable - and said he needed a picture of our paddling pool to check if that’s allowed.
‘Our house was getting to temperatures of above 30C, and our son has heat-related seizures. I got heat stroke as well and had to get in the bath to cool down. That’s why we bought the paddling pool.
But they’re telling us we can’t take simple measures in the garden without their approval. Even our two fabric deck chairs aren’t allowed either.’
Mr Leveson added: ‘Our son Zack has brain damage and is particularly at risk of seizures in the heat.
‘Apna Ghar housing association is specifically for people with disabilities, but now they’re sending threatening letters.
'These garden rules, supposedly for fire safety, are putting lives at risk.
'But if they think a paddling pool full of water could be flammable, does that mean my wife’s knickers on the washing line are flammable?’
The housing association letter reads: ‘It is your responsibility to have your back garden clear of all items which may cause fire safety risks.
‘This includes storage units, sheds, AstroTurf, basketball nets, BBQ units, bamboo screens, flammable garden seating and furniture etc.’
Apna Ghar manages 300 properties adapted for the disabled. It did not respond to a request for comment.

Like i said upthread no common sense whatsoever. I also sense obfuscation too.

JenniferBooth · 20/07/2024 18:08

From the comments

Housing Associations need dealing with as for many its like living in a Russian Gulag with all their stupid rules. I have an elderly and disabled friend living in a block of flats that gets so hot because of insulation, hot water pipes and restrictors fitted to windows, he has to go outside to find shade in hot weather or at worst, rely on the air con in his car. Despite having been given information on how to deal with the situation which has caused heat related deaths, the H.A. still won't do anything and have no regard for the Disabilities Act which clearly states that if a condition or disability has existed for longer than 12 months, reasonable adjustments must be made

We have the window restrictors too

SerendipityJane · 20/07/2024 18:08

I am guessing they think it makes the area look "common".

Fun fact: "Apna Ghar" means "Our house" in Hindi.

piloqeula · 20/07/2024 18:18

I’d have a terrible nights sleep if it was in the room.

I've always found turning it on an hour before going to bed got the room cool enough for the majority of the enight. It's warmer by the early hours of course but not insufferably so, no way I'd try to sleep with the sound of the unit 😂

piloqeula · 20/07/2024 18:21

to be honest I'm quite surprised that a fair few MNers do have AC at home. I didn't think it was really a thing in the UK.

I think it'll be an increasing phenomenon here. I just wish there was a more attractive way of doing it, the units look so unsightly clinging to the side of homes! I will only put it in our bedroom because the external wall is sheltered and not visible from the front 😂

QuarterYellow · 20/07/2024 18:25

Do it, we have a large mobile unit. Life. Changing. We use it far more than you would think. All the people saying go and sit in Starbucks when it’s hot for an hour, mine is cheaper to run for the day.

InterIgnis · 20/07/2024 18:25

We installed air conditioning units and consider it to have been a great investment. My husband and I are both from countries where air con is standard, and really felt it’s absence living in the UK.

wizzywig · 20/07/2024 18:26

I wouldn't buy a car without ac and my house has it too. Love it

EnglishBluebell · 20/07/2024 18:37

We live in a new build and if we had a ceiling fan, we'd all be decapitated by now

JenniferBooth · 20/07/2024 19:32

Made a sandwich...........sweated my guts out
went to the loo sweated my guts out
