We NEED air-conditioning

JustBeenSleeping · 20/07/2024 03:36

I'm wide awake and have partially stripped off. All the windows are open but there is no air.

I said to DH that we need AC! I don't care that we only get heat for about three days a year. This perimenopausal woman can't cope! Right now I'd be willing to remortgage our house to pay for it 😂

Just get one of those mobile units. We have one. Yes I am awake but I’m not hot 🤣
think it’s was about £150. You have to put the hose out the window but it’s lovely.

JustBeenSleeping · 20/07/2024 04:01

Ooh I didn't even think of that! Think I'll Google myself to sleep now

I have one of the Dyson cool tower fans in the bedroom it has helped a lot filter need changing depending on how much you use it. I have the bedroom door open and humidifier in the hall the noise does not bother me now. A friend has one of the ac units they are supposed to be very good.

MigGirl · 20/07/2024 04:32

We have ceiling fans, have had for years. While not AC they make a huge difference, the difference between being able to sleep and not sleep when it's hot in the summer.

WonderingWanda · 20/07/2024 04:33

I've just had a middle of the night shower after waking up stuck to the sheets...so grim. Not sure I can justify air con for one or two nights a year though. Last week I was sleeping under a blanket and wearing socks to bed.

combinationpadlock · 20/07/2024 04:34

air conditioning just contributes massively to global warming, and perpetuates the cycle

OMGsamesame · 20/07/2024 04:35

What we need is proper external window shutters.

Everyone having a/c is just going to warm the micro-environment.

KnittedCardi · 20/07/2024 04:36

I'm under my 12 tog duvet! Weird I know. And I'm in Surrey, hottest part of the country. It was 30 today, but slept fine. The only reason I am up is that I needed some water. Back to bed for another couple of hours snooze.

k1233 · 20/07/2024 04:54

You'll find ceiling fans very effective up to about 30-32. We get way hotter than that, but I only use the ceiling fans at night. I get too cold with air conditioning at night.

MixedCouple2 · 20/07/2024 04:58

My owrents got a small portable one. And during the summer they put the hose attached to the vent going outside. It fits perfectly.

Also sleep downstairs as it will be cooler and sleep newr the floor. That was always my go to.

Aussieland · 20/07/2024 05:04

Ceiling fans! I am in Australia but barely turn on my air con over summer because of them. Way cheaper and use a lot less electricity

MigGirl · 20/07/2024 05:27

We have these, you reverse them in winter also to help circulation of warm air around the room.
There are extremely quite, DH can't stand noise in the bedroom.

Dyson Humidifier - cool damp air, extremely quiet

DancingLions · 20/07/2024 06:26

I have portable air con in my room. I’m going through menopause and for me it’s not just 1 or 2 nights, I’ve been using it almost every night for months now as I get so hot. All through winter I had my bedroom windows wide open every night.

I usually put it on for a couple of hours (it has a timer) when I go up to bed. Sometimes I’ll wake having a hot flush in the night so I lean over and stick it on for another hour. It’s noisy but it’s white noise and I can easily sleep through it. I wouldn’t be without it. It’s something I would replace immediately if it broke.

TheSandgroper · 20/07/2024 06:41

I was going to suggest a dehumidifier, if you have one. Causes a draft which is cooling and encourages your sweat to evaporate which is also cooling. Warm and sticky environments are always worse than warm, dry climates.

If you are upstairs, move downstairs. ‘Cos, you know, heat rises.

Any sort of a fan is a good move. Do you have a blow heater? It might have a fan only selection.

Lots of Australians move all their mattresses to the lounge room if that’s their only fan or airconditioner.

I don’t have a downstairs but do prefer to move to the largest room rather than stay in my own bedroom or go to the spare room. Just the extra air in the bigger space helps me.

This. It’s really not hot here.

sashh · 20/07/2024 06:58

Two portable air cons and a fan here. The best money I have ever spent. They are noisy but I can sleep with one on. The cat likes to sit by the pipe that goes out the window.

@combinationpadlock and @Peonies12 I only had the heating on 4 times last winter. Most people pay more for their electricity in the winter I don't.

isthismylifenow · 20/07/2024 06:59

Ceiling fan. Not the greatest look but functional.

I have the bog standard ugly one but the dc have those that the blades retract in and it has a Bluetooth speaker built in to it.

They do make a big difference.

In a SH country so it's hot more than not.

manysausages · 20/07/2024 07:09

We had air con fitted in the bedroom a couple of years ago. Game changer. Also as a perimenopausal woman, it is on regularly. I use the fan setting all year round to cope with my tinnitus. Properly fitted ones are much better for the environment than the portable ones. There has been virtually no change to my electricity bill. I sleep much better, although I’ll always be a bit of an insomniac.

It has changed my life. I’d recommend to anyone who gets night sweats.

pilo7 · 20/07/2024 07:09

Thin wool duvet and mattress cover. Way less sweaty than regular bedding. Wear loose linen during the day.

Know I'm going to sound mean here but it's just a bit of discomfort a few nights a year. People in this country seem to want to live in 100% comfort all of the time. I'm not even an eco-warrior but it seems a bit spoiled to want to use even more resources just to avoid a bit of mild discomfort.

Yousaidwhatagain · 20/07/2024 07:11

We have a mobile one and it is brilliant!! Last night I was freezing

BingoMarieHeeler · 20/07/2024 07:11

Remortgage not necessary. AC Unit in hottest upstairs room which becomes fridge like, and all of upstairs nice and cool. Haven’t actually got it down from the loft yet this year as been so wet (I don’t recommend lofting them, they’re soooo heavy!)

Kids are sleeping on cooling dog mats 😄 (we don’t have a dog, bought them for the kids ha they work so well!)

BobnLen · 20/07/2024 07:13

We bought a mobile one, that is probably all you need as it is usually only a few days it is very hot.

I do agree with that TBH. Summer is over in a flash.

Our friend has a ceiling fan, a stylish one! Am tempted to get one installed tbh, I kind of love it in a retro way. I think they just swish around the normal air rather than conditioning it. The AC is absolutely epic but absolutely not green at all! 🌍
