We NEED air-conditioning

I'm wide awake and have partially stripped off. All the windows are open but there is no air.

I said to DH that we need AC! I don't care that we only get heat for about three days a year. This perimenopausal woman can't cope! Right now I'd be willing to remortgage our house to pay for it 😂

air conditioning just contributes massively to global warming, and perpetuates the cycle

This.

soupfiend · 20/07/2024 09:25

You need a thin peshtemel towel, make it wet, put it over you and put a fan blowing over you, you'll sleep fine

Zilla1 · 20/07/2024 09:30

FWIW, heat exchanging air conditioner units have much better energy efficiency.

Zanatdy · 20/07/2024 09:31

I have a portable one for my flat as the living room gets ridiculously hot as if gets a lot of sun. I’ve been on full time since yesterday morning and still 24 degrees inside

HÆLTHEPAIN · 20/07/2024 09:35

We got a fixed unit fitted in the living room. It’s absolutely amazing. The heat makes me really ill, partly due to peri and partly due to having ME/CFS. I’m considering getting another for upstairs.

At the minute I sleep downstairs when it’s too hot upstairs.

Just get one of those mobile units. We have one. Yes I am awake but I’m not hot 🤣
think it’s was about £150. You have to put the hose out the window but it’s lovely.

not so lovely for your neighbours that you are heating up the air outside you window on an already hot night, is it.

Not great for the human population as a whole that you are contributing to further global warming either

Mine costs the same as running my tv apparently so can’t use that much.

We have shutters, and keep them shut opening windows on the shady side and alternating. Opening all windows at night.

I'm in London it was warm last night but we all slept well.

Not being smug but I see so many people here down all the windows all day not understanding solar gain.

My neighbours, who live in Victorian houses with sash windows, don’t realise were designed to open top and bottom so the hot air leaves at the top and cooler air draws in through the bottom. Most people open them fully from the bottom. They are also not keeping the sun out during the day with blinds or curtains. Those top floor rooms must be very uncomfortable at night.

For those that have it installed, can I ask who you approach? Plumber, electrician, specialist company? Thanks.

We used a local plumbing and heating/boiler installation company.

Anyone know how much it costs to have proper AC fitted to a room or 2?

We have a mobile unit that is brilliant but a bit of a faff with the ventilation, I've not dug it out yet this year, because the heat has been infrequent and in short bursts fans have sufficed. Looks like it'll cool again now so won't get it out today!

Gwenhwyfar · 20/07/2024 10:21

OMGsamesame · 20/07/2024 04:35

What we need is proper external window shutters.

Everyone having a/c is just going to warm the micro-environment.

I have one on my Velux. The room gets extremely hot when the shutter is down.
Definitely not a solution.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/07/2024 10:22

You haven't said what you've already tried to keep cool.

Ours cost £1800. But I think the price was bumped up because we had to run the pipework from the outside through an upstairs bedroom. That was with Bosch units.

I also know someone who has a home cake business who had it put on an outside wall in the kitchen so the pipework was straight through and that cost £800. That was in a different part of the country and with a different brand of units.

susiedaisy1912 · 20/07/2024 10:27

I bought a proper mobile ac unit last winter ready for this summer. Used it yesterday and it was fabulous. Cost £180. They come in different watts/power levels so look for one that's suitable for your size room.

sashh · 20/07/2024 10:31

pinkhousesarebest · 20/07/2024 08:12

Could I just ask how the mobile unit works? If you have the tube out the window, surely the window needs to be open and the hot air tushes in from outside.. I ordered one and sent it back as I didn’t think this could possibly work ( for an attic room which becomes inhabitable in summer).

No it actively pushes the heat out of the window. A bit like if you blew a hairdryer out the window.

You close the window as much as possible, my first unit had foam to block the open window.

They do work, not as well as proper A/C.

@pinkhousesarebest

If you are ever back in the UK in a heatwave you need to get up early, open the windows and if you can the doors and use a fan to blow out the hot air.

Once there is cool air in the room close the windows and blinds.

I'm under my 12 tog duvet! Weird I know. And I'm in Surrey, hottest part of the country. It was 30 today, but slept fine. The only reason I am up is that I needed some water. Back to bed for another couple of hours snooze.

12 tog. I don't have that in middle of winter, or in our campervan in the middle of winter!

If you Google/youtube the instructions it will show you how to attach/fit the tubing to the window attachment so the window can be almost closed one fitted properly. It can be a bit if a faff but once it's set up it really does cool the room down.

Sosickfromholidywahh · 20/07/2024 10:33

@angeltattoo an air con engineer, they are a thing haha

combinationpadlock · 20/07/2024 10:33

Zilla1 · 20/07/2024 09:30

They are exchanging heat. thy are dumping the heat from your room outside. They are heating up the environment. And they are causing pollution, using fossil fuel and generating more heat while doing it

Sosickfromholidywahh · 20/07/2024 10:34

@piloqeula depends on where, what units you chose, but for a single unit you’d struggle to get under £1000, however, worth it in the long run! As cheaper than central heating by a mile

susiedaisy1912 · 20/07/2024 10:35

I have family members who work and one who owns an AC company and modern ac units are much more environmentally friendly than they used to be. AC isn't going to disappear if anything it's becoming more readily available and affordable.

Punkrockprincess · 20/07/2024 10:36

On very hot nights we put a clean towel each on a rinse and spin before bed and sleep under the damp towel. It really works.

That's a good idea
