I don't like going on holiday. Anyone else?

We are on day 4/5 of a UK break (Airbnb). Husband said do you want to just go home today and I could not have said yes faster 🤣

I just don't like going away. Strange bed, poor sleep, food I'm not sure about (I've got bowel endo and I have to be careful what I eat). Worries about finding a toilet in unfamiliar places when endo flares up, which it always does. It's definitely a hangover from awful childhood holidays with a bullying father and I'm having therapy at the moment to help with anxiety, but don't think I've ever been on holiday and not been tense and wanting to go home from day 1.

Anyone else just not get the fuss about holidays?

I love airports! I must be weird. My holiday starts in Spoons with a glass of fizz (or three) and a brekkie or lunch.

Blackcats7 · 18/07/2024 15:11

I hate holidays. Would far rather spend the money on my home to make every day nicer not just a week or two.
Hate travelling. Hate leaving my pets. Hate the unknown.

I would rather be at home too. I always look forward to going home far more than I do going away.

SaveMeASeatOnTheBusToHell · 18/07/2024 15:45

Our last 3 holidays we’ve left early.
Too small beds, little sleep, feeling out of sorts. I find it all too exhausting these days tbh.
I used to love holidays, I spent several months backpacking around the Southern hemisphere sleeping in hostels and living out of a ruck sack, a month at a time touring around places in America etc etc. you couldn’t pay me to go abroad these days, I might consider a weekend away somewhere in the U.K., but I like my home comforts too much.

veritusvarity · 18/07/2024 16:44

I love a holiday or mini break, but dh really hates them weirdo so now I just go away with dc. Works well, I come back to a super tidy house, and well rested happy DH, and dh has enjoyed a peaceful weekend/ week/ 10 days etc!

Freysimo · 18/07/2024 16:54

When I first started going on holidays abroad back in the 70s, it was a joy to travel, even the airports. It's hell now and I'll only go on a cruise.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 18/07/2024 16:59

I also had really stressful holidays as a child - parents fighting/sulking etc. My parents also used to spend loads of time in the hotel room, any my DM tends to stick to the same restaurants over and over again, which drives me nuts as a child an an adult. Lots of staying in grotty hotels which were less nice than our house as well.

I love holidays as an adult as I use them to "undo" all the shit holidays I had before. We're canny with credit cards and loyalty programs to stay in gorgeous hotels so it's always a joy. We also always get a suite or adjoining rooms for anything longer than a night or two, so we don't all have to cram into one tiny room.

I find daytrips a massive faff though and don't know why Mumsnet loves them so much. I've got a daytrip coming up on Saturday and I'm dreading the hassle, worrying about DS being carsick, trying to sort dog care wtc.

@TheChosenTwo

plus I’m just packing for myself

That'll be why it doesn't take you long.

Yup, I suspected as much!
Also I think if you’re going on something like a camping holiday you’d have more to take.
But still, I do really know people that are fannying about packing for days - just for a 5 day beach holiday. They spend more time packing than they do on the beach!

Me and DH absolutely LOVE going away. We love the Caribbean, All Inclusive, no stress and everything is catered for. All you have to do is bob around in the pool, drink cocktails and go for dinner/dancing. Love the hot weather. Love the fact we are not at work. In a few months we are going to Singapore, and then to Australia. Will be away for 3 weeks. Can't wait!

I can stress easily with preparing for holidays, so the best thing is to be prepared ahead of time!! I will be packed at least a week before we go.

Ditto with getting to the airport, with bags of time to spare. If the flight is stupidly early from our local airport, then we stay at an airport hotel the night before, even though we only live 15 mins away. It means no nasty surprises in the morning if there's an accident or such like. Anyway, it means you start your holiday one night early, with dinner at the airport hotel. If we are flying from an airport that's not local, we go down the night before. We never book horrible flight times either.

If we are doing a touring holiday, we do lots of research and make an itinerary beforehand. Happy to deviate from it of course, but at least you have a plan!

Research and preparation make it stress free, I find.

Same! Absolutely love airports, all the buzz, everyone going somewhere, seeing the big planes on the runway, having a nice meal and a bottle (or 2) of wine. Love flying too, Love plane food. Sometimes we push the boat out and get a room the night before with a runway view. Love sitting with some wine watching all the planes taking off and landing. Feeling the hotel room rumble with the jet noise. Aagh, lovely! Radison Blu at Manchester, Bloc at Gatwick, and the Hilton at Heathrow are great for this.

Overtired345 · 18/07/2024 17:16

I think your endo and bowel issues are a legitimate barrier, that would stress me out too.

TomatoSandwiches · 18/07/2024 17:17

I love holidays.... I hate the travel more though, I'm awful to travel with, not sure how to fix that tbh so I go solo or not at all.

zebranotzeebra · 18/07/2024 17:18

I love being abroad but I find travelling very anxiety provoking. I'm very claustrophobic and planes aren't the most relaxing places. For the last few years we've just stayed in the UK and rented holiday cottages and packed up the car and I found it so much more relaxing! If it weren't for the UK weather, I'd just do that I think. But I do crave sun and I love being away once I'm there. Off abroad next week and trying to remind myself just now that it will all be worth it when I land (even with a toddler to cramp the relaxation!)

WildFlowerBees · 18/07/2024 17:18

I don't like going away, I travel a lot though so when I'm home I really enjoy it.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2024 17:25

I admit I'm not keen and find it stressful
I know people think this is weird , but even the packing is a faff.

FlexibleFi · 18/07/2024 17:44

I don't really understand all this anxiety around packing. Maybe 45 years ago, when I first started going abroad, there were places where you couldn't get stuff you needed if you forgot to take it. These days even in quite out of the way places you can buy whatever you need to get by. And you have Google translate on your phone to communicate. I have memories of trying to mime that I needed to buy a corkscrew on a tiny Greek island in 1982. These days there's a supermarket stocking everything required and many of the younger locals speak English.

Borborygmus · 18/07/2024 17:52

I don't like holidays either, consequently I never bother.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 18/07/2024 17:53

Completely indifferent about them and generally feel they are a waste of money.
I have never once thought 'I need a holiday' and most years have too much annual leave left by November.
I do live in a beautiful part of the world but generally would only consider ever getting on a plane if I was going back to the UK to see family.

suburburban · 18/07/2024 17:54

I hate packing so I'd rather take what I need

It's hard to buy nice stuff on holiday ime unless you have plenty of time to shop

I love airport too, find them exciting. We use the Sofitel at T5 when flying from there. Just a short stroll and a lift from check in/bag drop.

suburburban · 18/07/2024 17:56

However I did enjoy our recent holiday abroad but was tired when we got back

RookieMa · 18/07/2024 17:57

I think the older I am the more I feel irritated by the getting there and back

Once I'm on holiday I love it especially a beach holiday abroad

I hate hate any type of self catering holiday

To me that is no sort of holiday at all and I'd rather stay at home

I like a resort holiday or nice hotel, someone to clean my room and people to cook for me

I like to explore the countries I'm visiting

I love a city holiday too eating out every day and night in a different restaurant. Also getting my room cleaned

suburburban · 18/07/2024 17:57

I'm always glad to come home

BeaRF75 · 18/07/2024 17:59

No. I love holidays - I'd go every week / month, if I could! I don't understand what's not to like.

TaylorSwish · 18/07/2024 17:59

Can you find somewhere you do like and go back each year? I know someone who does this. Her family book the same hotel room in Spain every August.
You might not feel so anxious and you would know where the loos are and what local shops to go to etc.
