I don't like going on holiday. Anyone else?

We are on day 4/5 of a UK break (Airbnb). Husband said do you want to just go home today and I could not have said yes faster 🤣

I just don't like going away. Strange bed, poor sleep, food I'm not sure about (I've got bowel endo and I have to be careful what I eat). Worries about finding a toilet in unfamiliar places when endo flares up, which it always does. It's definitely a hangover from awful childhood holidays with a bullying father and I'm having therapy at the moment to help with anxiety, but don't think I've ever been on holiday and not been tense and wanting to go home from day 1.

Anyone else just not get the fuss about holidays?

I've found that taking my own pillowcase and my own duvet cover (no duvet, just the cover) or a blanket I often use makes the world of difference for unfamiliar beds.

DancingLions · 18/07/2024 10:48

I have never, and will never, take a lounging in the sun holiday. I hate the heat and would be bored after an hour. If I'm going to lie around reading a book I'd rather do it in my garden or, if the weathers bad, lying on my bed, for free! For that reason, every holiday I take involves a lot of walking.

I am finding now that I am reaching a point where it does feel like a huge amount of effort. If I'm flying then the travel either side of it exhausts me. Lugging suitcases around, walking miles in massive airports, squashed into tiny seats on the plane, passport control queues (especially now we've left the EU). Then the energy required for being up, out and doing stuff every day. I'm starting to see why cruises are so popular with retirees, although that doesn't really appeal either.

I've done the odd overnight/weekend trip over the last couple of years and I do have a big trip planned early next year. But holidays are definitely losing their shine for me. Luckily I have been to the places I desperately wanted to go, so anything else would be a bonus. I can't see me doing "big" holidays for much longer.

AdviceNeeded2024 · 18/07/2024 10:55

I like going away and having a change of scenery, short breaks, longer holidays, in the UK and abroad. The only thing I detest is packing, unpacking (more so when a longer holiday) and airports - cannot stand the faffing and waiting about at airports I also don’t really like flying that much, when it’s long haul.

I do need variety though so I couldn’t do two weeks in a resort that I didn’t of couldn’t leave, or round the pool, I would get bored quite quickly. I like to travel about if it’s more than a few days!

Bluevelvetsofa · 18/07/2024 10:58

I don’t want to pay good money to stay somewhere that’s less comfortable than my home. Unfortunately, most hotels, apartments and cottages are just that.

We went to a supposedly upmarket hotel for a long weekend to celebrate a big anniversary. The food was fine, but everything was an extra, the room was shabby and the lounge area was too.

A ‘luxury’ five star apartment had mould round the shower, which was broken at the bottom. The pillows had a musty smell and if the bedding had been changed, it certainly hadn’t been ironed. There were so many things wrong with it and we eventually had a partial refund and it was removed from the listings.

I’d rather go for days out and sleep in my own bed.

Love holidays but not UK ones - hate spending a fortune to be down the road, in rubbish weather!

How odd 😂 This attitude would certainly be a dealbreaker for me in a partner.

💯

Redhairandhottubs · 18/07/2024 11:03

I'm on holiday now and while I'm enjoying it and not where you are, I'm 4 days in and ready to go home now! Where I'm staying is beautiful but it's hot and I'm struggling to sleep. I've got numerous intolerances/ plus vegetarian and struggling to find things to eat. I'm also struggling being with DP all day. We don't live together and being together 24/7 feels a lot! I'm quite looking forward to being back in the UK where it's cool and I can be in my own space.

GingerPirate · 18/07/2024 11:03

I get you, especially re your health.
It's just me and my husband, and the older
I get, the more it's "What's the actual point?" 😂

You can stay in the UK but still feel like you are abroad - Scottish islands for example.

quockerwodger · 18/07/2024 11:06

I've never slept well in a hotel bed, BnB bed, Airbnb bed, guest house bed, caravan, tent etc

I barely sleep great in my own bed.

If I could take my bed to new places, I might enjoy being away.

Rightsraptor · 18/07/2024 11:10

I'm not at all interested holidays. I've travelled widely in the past, although travelling and going on holiday aren't the same thing, but now I just can't be arsed. I used to find it all exhausting when the DC were small as every damn thing was left to me to sort out.

The thought of airports and planes makes my heart sink, ditto packing. I now content myself with a few days here and there in the UK and prefer spending money on my garden. But I'm single, so nobody else to think about now.

FrenchandSaunders · 18/07/2024 11:14

Why do so many people say packing is a chore? Genuine question.

Bestyearever2024 · 18/07/2024 11:15

Anyone else just not get the fuss about holidays?

The thing I don't get is people who live their lives to be on holiday. They're desperate to get away. Desperate to get away from home, work, everyday life

Their everyday lives must be awful if they constantly need to dream/plan/live for being somewhere else

I'm not bothered about going away. I will and I do, but I'm not bothered

That might be because I love my life exactly as it is, day to day

Or it might be for some other reason?

No. Not awful. But I don't have Greek ruins or the Louvre or Angkor Wat in my backyard. Or cathedrals and castles.

I do think staying at home is more climate friendly, which is why this summer have only done UK breaks.

Notthatcatagain · 18/07/2024 11:21

I too have a bowel condition and dread being away from home. Even a day out can be difficult. The stress of packing all the extra stuff that I need and the worry about possible accidents. One year I ran out of pads and had to buy an unfamiliar brand and ended up with a pressure sore on my backside. Never travel with less than 3 pairs of pj's and masses of undies. Unfamiliar food can be a disaster of course and the constant stress of finding a public toilet, a lot of which are ghastly. It all just completely takes the shine off. I try to mitigate the food worry a bit by self catering and taking several meals that I've cooked and frozen in advance, I try to choose things that are a bit more special to meet family halfway with eating out. We also like a ploughman's night, lots of crusty bread, cheese, pate and salad type stuff, then I can choose safe foods. I still always end up thinking that it just wasn't worth it and am glad to be home.

Legendofthelostkeys · 18/07/2024 11:27

I hate leaving my cats! We have a neighbour who's brilliant and comes and feeds them and plays with them etc but I still worry. I enjoy holidays with friends or my sister when my DH is at home as I know the cats are in safe hands 😂

ImthatBoleyngirl · 18/07/2024 11:28

I love holidays abroad, but can't get excited about holidays in the UK. I live in Devon so lots of nice beaches, touristy places etc so that might be something to do with it, but it just doesn't feel like a holiday if I don't get on a plane and end up in a different country.

Ilovemyshed · 18/07/2024 11:28

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 18/07/2024 10:24

I agree OP. A lot of fuss about nothing. I enjoy going away for a few days to do something specific, but the idea of going somewhere for 2 weeks just to lie on a sun lounger and do sod all, strikes me as hell on earth.

Closely followed by 1500 people in close quarters with bad entertainment on a cruise ship.

circular2478 · 18/07/2024 11:29

I love going on holiday, but by the last day I usually can't wait to get home, but perhaps that's the travel I don't like.

Ilovemyshed · 18/07/2024 11:30

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/07/2024 10:24

When people say on threads like this that they miss their “home comforts”… what do you mean? I mean I get it if you’re camping or staying in a hostel or something but if you’re staying in a nice hotel surely they have the same or similar things you have at home?

no judgement, just genuinely curious!

Not necessarily. I've worked incredibly hard to afford a high end mattress and bedding. My home bedroom and bathroom is better than any hotel I've stayed in and generally quieter and more restful.

Home is my sanctuary.

Sweet lord thats not what any cruise i have been on is like. yes you have loads of people ( can do smaller ships) but the ships are so vast it never feels busy or crowded. You could say the same for large hotel complexes. The entertainment has been top notch , last one i was on we saw a version of Cirque De Sole which was unreal and Priscilla queen of the dessert, the singers were top note
There are so many different types of holidays to suit what ever people want

I agree with OP to a certain extent - hate the rushing before it, making sure my work is covered, pets sorted packing etc . Then the catch up when back. But the benefits of having a bit of sun and a change of scenery far out weighs that. I need some sort of heat. And we just dont get that here. Plus we have seen some amazing places but if you dont like going away thats ok too. Do what suits you

I’ve been to several of the Scottish islands but it just doesn’t compare to a foreign holiday for me personally. Any UK trips are totally weather dependent and if you’re unlucky it’s pretty miserable - just hate spending money to be stuck in the rain as I might as well be at home!

For me I am indecisive about what to take so end up taking loads of stuff I don’t use or wear and usually forget something 😂 this is even with lists and outfit planning!
I also and not very good at suitcase Tetris, I can never seem to repack when it’s time to come home and fit everything in without great difficulty!
