To stop buying Fevertree tonic over their sponsorship of the US Republican Conference?

I don’t want the money I pay to Fevertree to go to the guys who are positioning the U.K. as an enemy by saying stuff like “the U.K. is the first Islamist state with nuclear weapons”

And the guys who want to roll back women’s rights.

I’ll cheerfully drink Schweppes bitter lemon with my gin if it comes to it.

Fevertree are dead to me now. Some of those NAT-C loons are frightening.

Just get Aldi or Lidl version - taste exactly the same and way cheaper

ZenNudist · 17/07/2024 20:05

Yes I will tell DH to avoid it from now on. Schweppes is fine for day to day and I was already planning on switching grapefruit soda for one by a nicer make I found

Isn’t it what the National Conservatives call themselves?

It's not a Nat Con (national conservatives) event. It's the Republican National Convention (RNC), the democrats will hold theirs (DNC) in August.

I've never heard anyone refer to national conservatives the way you have so I doubt you have either.

Cailleach1 · 17/07/2024 20:20

Interestingly, someone has added to Fevertree’s Wikipedia entry to state they have sponsored the (US) 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

It seems strange (or maybe seeking to make trouble if untrue), as Fevertree themselves have said they aren’t sponsors of the event. They certainly have a lot of awards, and are involved in a campaign to eradicate Malaria (the quinine connection, I suspect).

Teddleshon · 17/07/2024 20:22

@ZenNudist excellent idea, what with Schweppes in Europe being owned by Coca Cola, a company which tends to score worst on any measure related to carbon emissions and ethics. Oh and Coke is also Trump’s favourite drink.

Fever Tree tonic isn’t all that special any more. Here are some in my opinion more interesting alternatives:

buy direct or from Amazon.

Love the pomelo and pink pepper one. In Tesco, Waitrose, Amazon…

Some interesting flavours, quite strong…in supermarkets

Your do realise that the way American fiscal federalism works it's the blue democratic states subsidizing red states, right? Funny how the "workshy" are so much more productive.

Yes and when you actually educate yourself beyond reading an article in the Washington Post you will know that when you factor in demographics such as age and disability of the states residents the subsidy factors out to zero.

Starbucks are sponsoring as well

Aw shite, if that’s true then Fevertree are off the shopping list, forever.
Don’t like Starbucks anyway, but they are an American firm. What’s Fever tree’s excuse?? They’re U.K. based. Other than we want loads more cash thanks.

and for those saying boycotts
don’t work? Sometimes they are the ONLY things that work, hitting the £€$¥ is often the only way to get companies to pay attention.

Look what happened to Budweiser.

I can highly recommend Marlish Water tonic as an alternative.

I second this! Tried it at the weekend and was pleasantly surprised. Not cheap, but for special occasions it’s lovely

Ooh, thanks. On it! Thats the thing, there are ALWAYS plenty of alternatives.

Hippyhippybake · 17/07/2024 20:42

Oh for heavens sake, neither Starbucks nor Fever Tree are “sponsoring” this or any other political event.

Is this because you read something on Twitter? Please don't slander a British brand without providing valid evidence.

Can we slander a non-British brand without evidence?

The standard water they do is lovely too.

Do you know much about them? They're such a genuinely lovely company.

I don’t know anything; I’ll be honest I got it out of a craft gin club box and my DH made me a faux gin with it (pregnant) and I thought it was pretty special when I had it.

Will definitely look into them further though-especially if they’re a lovely company (makes it taste even nicer!) Thanks for the heads up

They are amazing, genuinely great people. And no, I don't work for them, was just lucky enough to meet them as part of a previous job.

what is the point of this post apart from showing how self satisfied you are
and your husband being the arbiter of tonic water tasting, it’s bizarre -

Fevertree has quinine as a main ingredient

Tesco Schweppes and others have Aspartame and Saccharin as main ingredients

apart from the delightful taste, this is why we buy appreciate and enjoy Fever Tree
(on offer of course)

Actually the main ingredients in all 3 are the same in the same order
Carbonated water
Sugar
Citric acid

Vance is right, isn’t he!

Just today Islamic extremists demonstrated in Marble Arch without the police intervening:

I will be buying more Fevertree than usual.

Starbucks are as liberal as they come. Even the wokest of the woke value cold hard cash over bat shit ideology.

Hilarious

How to spot a full on right winger.

Hilarious.

Isn’t it a bit disingenuous to say it’s not a Nat Con event it’s a Republican event when the guy whose comments I referred to (J.D Vance) is the Republican candidate for the Vice Presidency and he said the comments about our country at a National Conservativism event which probably wasn’t full of Democrats was it? 😀

They’re not sponsoring the event, their products are simply on sale there. How is it reasonable to suggest a boycott of a product simply on the basis that it is being sold at a particular event? Should commercial companies vet the political views of all their customers to check whether they’re “acceptable” before agreeing to supply them.

No doubt Donald Trump has an iPhone etc , on that basis should Apple be boycotted? Where on earth does it stop.

A voice of reason. This is utterly ridiculous, it's so ill informed. It's embarrassing.

Squareroot · 18/07/2024 05:39

Catnipcupcakes · 17/07/2024 17:29

I think boycotting big brands is pointless but you do what makes you feel better.

Fevertree elderflower tonic is and will continue to be my drink of choice.

Doesn’t mean I don’t think their stance is reprehensible.

Not true. When people boycotted McDonalds in the Middle East after its franchise owner started out dishing free food to Israeli soldiers going into Gaza it really affected their bottom line & they had to intervene. Boycotts can make a difference

Edited

Boycotts work when people actually inform themselves of companies which are actually sponsoring events. Not just that product was sold at an event. Good comparison with pp and iPhones.

DelectableMe · 18/07/2024 05:50

Also; the USA is a democracy, the people there can choose who they want. It's not like those poor Palestinians under Hamas, or Russians under Putin.

Teddleshon · 18/07/2024 07:58

@Squareroot what do you mean it made a difference? McDonald’s simply bought back the franchises to protect the individual owners from these attacks and boycotts. What difference did that actually make as far as the Palestinian cause is concerned?
