Royal Children - Time for State school?

microplastic · 17/07/2024 15:45

Should the Royal Family children be educated in state schools? Why do they get to attend private schools on taxpayers money? Is this something the Labour government could push for?

I maybe wrong but I don't think the public fund their schooling just the security so the country wouldn't be financially better off. The Royal have income streams and money outside of their public funding. Plus Diana's estate left several million to each of her children.

Waystation · 17/07/2024 16:10

OP - you are just being daft now!

Surely their security alone costs millions.

There shouldn't be "royal" children at all. The UK should become a democracy.

I think we are a democracy?

Prince Charles should be the last king who is head of state and they should make plans for a President and elected 2nd chamber.

It's absolutely ridiculous that we have head of state determined by birth. We have been a couple of accidents away from Prince Andrew and Prince Harry becoming head of state... No fan of Blair or Johnson but at least we could vote them out.

AgentJohnson · 17/07/2024 16:12

Surely security measures can be put in, More cost effective than the full cost of their private education.

I don’t think you understand how much good security would cost and how it would impact everyone who worked, attended and lived in the immediate vicinity of the school. Sending the royal children to ‘state’ school would be purely performative.

x2boys · 17/07/2024 16:12

I'm not a royalist and would get rid ofcthe royal family tomorrow if i could
But as others say say security would be massive
And what about the affect on all the other kids having to deal with crowds of people wanting a glimpse of the royal children ?

What a stupid post. You do know that the royal family have their own money don't you? They can afford to send their children to private school. Even Katherine's parents are multi millionaires in their own right.

But it costs lots at private school too surely?

Yes, it does but they would need security at state school so the public purse will pay either way. The move wouldn't save the public anything, more likely cost more due to the increased difficulty in providing security at a state school

mitogoshi · 17/07/2024 16:15

Security is a major concern, private schools tend to be smaller especially secondary schools which helps. Also there's lots of disruption if you have high profile pupils, there are well known people who have sent their children to state school and is has been a headache for school staff.

As for foreign royals, many of them are educated in the U.K.!

OneBadKitty · 17/07/2024 16:15

School fees are a drop in the ocean compared to what the government spends on most things

No, imagine our future king being educated in a school like I attended. Just no.

I'm assuming your school sucked?

You didn't deserve that.

The issue raised by the OP should be looked at a different way - why can't all state schools be superb? All children deserve a great school.

spuddy4 · 17/07/2024 16:16

I wouldn't want them in my children's school. Think of the circus that surrounds them and how much upheaval it would cause for everyone else. Leave them where they are.

Superhansrantowindsor · 17/07/2024 16:18

The Royals are not known for academic brilliance despite their schooling. However, I am fairly certain their fees are paid from their own personal wealth.

microplastic · 17/07/2024 16:18

@mathanxiety Thank you. This is my point. I'm not from the UK, not a supporter of any of the political parties - and this is what I'm wondering. There are no private primary schools where I'm from. English isn't my first language but this is the point I'd like to make.

Respectisnotoptional · 17/07/2024 16:19

Don’t be so utterly ridiculous, would you like them to live in some grubby tower block too.
They aren’t state funded, Prince William has a large income from the Duchy Estate in Cornwall, no different to any other business owner.
This country would go to the dogs if people like you had their way, there has always been rich and poor, without the rich we’d all be poor.
Give your silly head a wobble!

Cestfoutu · 17/07/2024 16:19

The security is the nightmare, especially when they get to secondary school. At St Thomas's Battersea when George started they had to install security cameras everywhere. There was a policeman on the front door, a bodyguard in the classroom and a surveillance man watching the cameras at all times. The class teacher had to remove any of his work from the walls and his desk and lock it in a secure filing cabinet at the end of every day. Apart from the issues with the other children, I don't think many schools would want to deal with this.

usernother · 17/07/2024 16:19

No. Of course not.

The Belgian royal family and several other European royals send their children to regular schools. Low key, low fuss. Much better approach all round if you ask me. From what I can tell, most of them turn out well-rounded and personable.

Not what we can say about the current UK lot.

5 minutes on google says that is not the case. Across Europe the various royal families are sending their children to schools with fees ranging from 40,000 Euros to 100,000 Euros

The Belgians and others are fans of the United World Colleges in Wales or the Adriatic.

whoamI00 · 17/07/2024 16:20

They were born to be rich. Even without tax payers money, I imagine their parents can easily afford private education. It's their parents choice. Why should they attend state school when other rich kids attend private school?

The Middletons made their own. How much of the Royal family’s ’personal wealth’ came by way of anything other than them being royal? I don’t just mean the Civil List money. Everything and every house they own has come t9 them due to inheritance because they are royal (except Charles’ biscuits, I suppose…but even then…).
