Royal Children - Time for State school?

microplastic · 17/07/2024 15:45

Should the Royal Family children be educated in state schools? Why do they get to attend private schools on taxpayers money? Is this something the Labour government could push for?

Lol the civil list hasn't been a thing for over a decade, since 2011.

Apologies, sovereign grant. Basically the same thing. Either way, taxpayers don’t pay for royal kids’ schooling.

How did they acquire the land?

About a thousand years ago.

By inheritance or conquest. Battle. Bloodshed - others or their own.

Never read any history?🙄

Grannychick · 18/07/2024 19:09

Look what USA has for a democratically electedHead of State! No thanks. The Prime Minister id good enough.

BMW6 · 18/07/2024 19:09

Last English king to die in battle was Richard III in 1485.

His crown (and everything that went with it) was taken by Henry Tudor (Henry VII) who had a very tenuous claim, but, to the Victor goes the Spoils.

Obviously. And that’s my point. They have it because of being royal. It stinks.

Again for those not listening. You can’t choose your King/Queen. If the politician you dislike were to be born eldest child of a monarch you’ld be stuck with them. If they are elected you can get rid. Remember that we only don’t have Andrew by chance.

We don't have the same system as the US. We'd have a similar system to Ireland whose head of state is Michael Higgins. He seems decent enough.

Thank goodness eh?

Thankfully chance made William pop out first too.

How lucky are we?

How do you know this. We voted in Boris Johnson - who's to say what sort of clown we'd vote in as HOS. Probably a Love Island winner.

Will of t(e people…still better than imposition. And we can vote them out again.

Getonwitit · 18/07/2024 19:22

Hopefully Keir Starmer's children are not a target but we know many terrorists would love the glory of hitting such a target.

I'd rather we all had a vote on our president and were able to vote them out or follow due process to get rid off them.

There would be no need to dump parliamentary democracy and introduce a presidential system.

An elected head of state in a parliamentary democracy would have a role more like that of the President of Ireland.

I.e. no particular purpose most of the time. The system we have works, it costs the taxpayer about £1.50 a year per head (security) and is self-perpetuating and subject to the rule of Parliament. The sovereign is above politics but intimately entwined in the parliamentary system and our legal system. Wrenching the sovereign out would be very difficult and not worth the trouble (as T Blair found when he wanted to abolish the role of Lord Chancellor - mind he made it more subject to political influence by making the LC be an MP and subject to the PM).

And they're fun. They add to the joy of life and provide a pageantry few other countries can boast.

PoliteCritic · 18/07/2024 19:37

It costs far more than £1.50 a year. That £1.50 does not include the cost of security. Republic's own research shows the true annual cost of the monarchy is at least £345m annually.

But we have a Prime Minister who we vote in (or out) and they wield all the power just as a President would, the reigning Monarch doesn't have any power and is just a figurehead..

First the monarch comes to their position through accident of birth, they are above the law and can also disprove laws that may affect their personal wealth. It's anachronistic and their life is a soap opera. We're also paying for their lavish lifestyle in palaces and multiple homes alongside their family.

The President would get a wage, be voted in and do a job. They would hold the position for a few years, in the case of Ireland, seven. They would be subject to the same laws as everyone else and could lose their position if they flouted it.

Precipice · 17/07/2024 15:47

There shouldn't be "royal" children at all. The UK should become a democracy.

😄

Bless. Some people really don't get it.

Buffs · 18/07/2024 19:47

Why stop at schools? Why should taxpayers be paying any part of their extravagant lifestyles? Prince Andrew living in his grace and favour royal 30 bedroom mansion, driving Bentleys and land rovers, his own personal security detail and riding everyday at his royal stables. That should be addressed for starters.
I’d like to vote for a republic please.

Republic have a vested interest in negging the rf as much as possible. They use weasel words like 'likely' an awful lot.

A huge portion of their money also came from the dissolution of the Monasteries, then after that from colonialism, and then from squirreling money away in tax havens and negotiating favourable treatment on inheritance tax.

PoliteCritic · 18/07/2024 19:56

They use words like likely because so much of the information is not available. So they try and estimate the security cost, but the actual cost is hidden.
So Republic are being very honest in the use of their words. Unlike the Royal Family who pretend their cost is £1.50 per head. That is simply untrue as it leaves out many costs.
