Royal Children - Time for State school?

Should the Royal Family children be educated in state schools? Why do they get to attend private schools on taxpayers money? Is this something the Labour government could push for?

Again, though, this conversation is mad. The kids don't belong to the state. It could be done, sure. But it's not our decision and it's definitely not Kier Starmer's decision.

But it is Labour’s right to price as many commoners out of PE as possible.

😏

Apparently the Marquess of Milford Haven is the last surviving Anglo-Saxon peer.

I thought that title was held by the Mountbattens (Battenberg) which was a cadet/morganatic line of a German royal family. Hessian possibly? The Battenberg were all descendants of Julia, the morganatic wife. German, anyway.

Earl Mountbatten, I think.

I mean, I don't agree with the policy. But at least it is the government's right to set taxes on things in general, for everyone. By that logic we might as well set the tax to zero so even more people can afford it. Or abolish altogether. What you can't do is say these types of schools are fine and then forbid three particular kids from going to them.

What - like Trump 🤣

There would be no need to dump parliamentary democracy and introduce a presidential system.

An elected head of state in a parliamentary democracy would have a role more like that of the President of Ireland.

Plus many teachers are quite left wing so I likely to treat any royalty fairly. They’d probably spend most of their time trying to bring the kids down.

Oh fuck off. Many teachers are left wing because they see the actual effects of right wing policies. We are still professionals though. I hope you home school if you don’t think we can be trusted. And you wonder why teachers are leaving in droves.

With a president like Trump?

You know if someone like Trump were born eldest child of the monarch we’d be stuck with him, yes? It’s 8n,y chance we don’t have Andrew.

Paul McCartneys children went to state school when he was even more famous than now.
And given the low educational attainment of most members of the Royal family, it makes me laugh the argument that they need to be better educated than the average state school can provide.

Terrorists didn't want to kill his children.

Symposium123 · 18/07/2024 18:25

YABU. It’s none of your business what they choose to spend their money on.

moaningmyrtle4 · 18/07/2024 18:25

The sovereign grant only pays for official duties. NOT the kids’ schooling. They make money off land and other investments etc so no skin of my back or any other taxpayer.

The point is, he was elected. People make strange choices.

How did they acquire the land?

It wasn't them...it was the people living centuries ago.

TeatimeForTheSoul · 18/07/2024 18:39

Time for VAT in private healthcare too, or just make everyone use the NHS.

Both NHS and state education being crushed by defunding, but if we’re going with ideology rather than pragmatism should shove all adults and children into state provision.

Pragmatism would suggest re-funding both NHS and education before pushing extra loads their way.

Hahaha ha what a ridiculous suggestion.

Sethera · 18/07/2024 18:42

I don't think we should have a Royal Family, but since we do, I think the only option is to educate the children privately, or at an extremely selective type of state school. They'd be fish out of water in the average state school; their lives are so far removed from the typical schoolchild, they'd struggle to make friends and probably be badly bullied.

Gorgonemilezola · 18/07/2024 18:45

Our elected politicians send their kids to public school - Sunak, Johnson, Cameron, Blair so being elected makes no difference.

Sandflea9900 · 18/07/2024 18:48

Their schooling is not paid for by the taxpayer. The Prince of Wales’ personal expenses are covered by his net income after tax from the Duchy of Cornwall. Only his working and office costs are paid for by the taxpayer, via the Civil List.

Lol the civil list hasn't been a thing for over a decade, since 2011.
