To ask which dog breed you think is most represented in the media?

Can't work out if my mind is playing tricks on me or if my puppy is the most used dog type in advertising/branding/television shows etc.

I'm aware of Baader-Meinhoff phenomenon so I'm wondering if it's that (or confirmation bias??).

So I'm trying for objectivity here 😂.

Which breed do you think you see most often? And useful to know if it's your breed or one that's close to your heart?

Puppy tax will be paid later so not to sway your responses.

Sausages!
Pic of Neville Longbottom just because.

A decade ago I’d have said Labrador but these days I think it’s Dachshunds, they seem to be everywhere in advertising.

wetotter · 17/07/2024 15:29

News: whatever the current demon dog is (currently XL bully types)

Advertising: dachshunds

General: labradors

Also sheepdogs (when they want a dog doing something clever), hairy little terriers (nostalgia) and I'm sure I saw the Dulux dog again recently.

Pugs and French bulldogs on merch and social media

Catnipcupcakes · 17/07/2024 15:29

You’re definitely imagining it, OP, I’ve never even heard of the Patterdale breed.

Its Labradors, by a country mile.

Vates · 17/07/2024 15:30

It should be whippets (my favourite!) but is normally labs or sausage dogs. But I love all dogs really.

OP doesn't have a Patterdale, I do. And there's a very good reason they're not more used in the media - they are evil personified. Well, mine is anyway.

Congratulations - you're Patterdale is normal Grin

I sometimes worry that people will get one thinking "looks like a smaller lab, and terriers can't be that bad really"

Though it could be worse - I met a Patterdale x Lakeland the other day

If you like dogs and wholesome voice overs I'd recommend this channel whenever you need a little cheery pick me up 😃

It's fine - if anyone is even thinking about getting a Patterdale and asks me what they are like, I just say 'here, hold this for a minute...' and run away. They always change their minds within thirty seconds and go and get a sensible breed.

Changea · 17/07/2024 15:54

I’d say pugs at the moment.

To be fair I dont really know how they get all the dachshunds in ads. I'm yet to meet one that listens and isn't as stubborn as a mule.

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/07/2024 16:02

Dachshunds seem popular in advertising at the min.

Pugs and Frenchies still are despite various efforts and guidelines to stop this promotion of brachycephalic breeds.

Labradors and to a slightly lesser extent, Golden Retrievers, still very popular.

Attractive (generally light coloured or with lots of white particularly white blazes down the face) scruffy mongrels are quite popular.

I've seen a few Deerhounds in recent ads for things which is nice as they're a rare breed really - many will assume they're a mongrel or a lurcher perhaps if they don't know the breed.

Another rare breed I occasionally spot playing a mongrel is the Berger Picard/Picardy Sheepdog.

Hiya, my pup isn't a patterdale, that's a PP that's mentioned one.

My gut response was something of the labrador type/style.

I don't feel like I see many dogs on TV though...

Confirmation bias is a very real thing though! Like when you start looking to buy a particular car, you start seeing them everywhere!

TrixieFatell · 17/07/2024 16:18

I'd say frenchies, smooth haired dachshunds and labs. XL bullies in the news.

I never really see my dogs breed much, he's a sausage but the wire haired type (the best type)

eosmum · 17/07/2024 16:19

I keep seeing Beagles, but I have one so BM may apply.

Wahine24 · 17/07/2024 16:20

Dachshunds?
I love a good twatterdale 🐕🤣
( I've had several love the little buggers)

FastFood · 17/07/2024 16:22

I'd say Golden retrievers, JRT, dachshunds, corgi and frenchies

longdistanceclaraclara · 17/07/2024 16:24

ShillingForLabour · 17/07/2024 14:47

Not a dog owner, but Labrador, then border terriers (or similar like Cairn terriers), then probably alsatians.

Apart from Toto I don't think over seen a cairn!

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2024 16:27

My golden retriever is literally the generic dog pic used by dog food brands, vets, insurance, everyone. Grin

mitogoshi · 17/07/2024 16:29

Depends on what media you access, if it's countryfile and outdoorsy YouTube feeds then collies are ubiquitous. I would say cockerpoos are pretty common along with Labradors

PuppyMonkey · 17/07/2024 16:29

In fact, Google “generic dog pic” and that’s him in most of them on Shutterstock etc.

My deepest sympathies.

I adore mine, absolutely love every hair on her little whiskery face. But my God is she hard work!

Caerulea · 17/07/2024 16:30

Labs for sure. I'd say classic black & white collie too, especially for advertising.

@Demonhunter I LOVE that guy, he's just so talented. Really impressive
