What family meals do you make in a week?

I need inspiration and also just interested to know what everyone does...

OP posts:
willWillSmithsmith · 16/07/2024 20:57

@BlindBat I think it's like a fray bentos (used to eat them a lot as a kid!)

Hollowvoice · 16/07/2024 20:59

There are very few meals that everyone in this house will eat!
Between that and timings of various things I usually make 2 meals. This week:

Monday: DC1 made chilli in Food Tech so ate that. Curry for me, DH, DC2 and 2 friends
Tuesday: Leftover chilli for DC1, pizza for DC2 (they would both have had pizza if not for the leftovers, that's a normal Tuesday) and lamb and feta meatballs with flatbread, yoghurt sauce and chips for me and DH
Wednesday: pasta bake for DCs and either squash risotto or Mexican rice bake for us
Thursday: "chips and" - we're all back late from an event at DC1's school so I'll chuck assorted beige food in the oven!
Friday: not sure yet for DCs, possibly spag bol. Spicy chicken and cous cous with veggies and feta for me, DH and 2 friends
Saturday: probably fajita type things for DCs. DH and I are going out!
Sunday: BBQ at our friends' house

The only things I make that everyone will eat are lasagne, enchiladas, chilli, spag bol and "chips and" (and that's cos the "and" is flexible!).

heinzseight · 16/07/2024 21:01

Inextremis · 16/07/2024 19:57

I cook everything from scratch (I'm retired, I have the time and I enjoy it)

Yesterday: chicken chow mein
Today: chicken Kyiv, creamed mushrooms, new potatoes, lettuce
Tomorrow: fish, chips and mushy peas (thanks for this thread, just reminded me to soak the peas!)
Thursday: spagbol, side salad
Friday: store-bought lasagne (DH - I don't like it, it's his pub night so it can just get shoved in the oven when he gets home), home made curry for me, from the freezer, previously batch-cooked, pilau rice
Saturday: friends coming round for a cheese fondue night
Sunday: roast lamb, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli

Please can you tell me how to do the peas 🙏🏻 my nan used to do them this way and there's nothing quite like them, I never got the recipe when she was alive. Thank you

Great question !!

Veggie chilli & quinoa with guacamole, sour cream and tortilla chips with cheddar….

Mashed potatoes & sausage with Indian daal…

Chicken tarragon & rice with broccoli…

Turkey escalope with sweet potatoes & Parmesan-crusted, baked cauliflower

Thai, red chicken curry with veggies & basmati rice

Pasta with cherry tomatoes, Parmesan & fresh basil

BBQ mixed grill, jacket potatoes with garlic butter served with mixed salad, avocado & tomatoes

All home-made, my kids love my cooking, can’t even go to restaurants now as they prefer my cooking 😂😂😂

I am reading through all these deciding whose house I’d rather live at, this is the winner so far!!

We eat a lot of stir fries but these dishes we have quite often:
Homemade sushi with miso soup and seaweed salad (the whole family is involved in the making so it’s usually a Friday meal)
Frijoles charros (vegetarian)
Chickpea and beans curry
Salade niçoise (kids’ favourite)
Steak tartare with various side vegetables
Fish/tofu/seafood stir fry with rice or soba
Goya chanpuru (without pork)
Vegetarian tacos
Soba soup with shrimp and vegetables (usually spring onions, soybeans, shredded cabbage)
Okonomiyaki
Various one pot fish and lentil stews

Howmanysleepsnow · 16/07/2024 21:26

So, dd is veggie but eats out a lot.
DS1 wants protein.
I’m trying to lose weight.
DH is cutting down on red meat
DS2 & DS3 are easy, though will change likes/ dislikes day to day.

current variations are Greek salad +/- halloumi/ lamb/ potatoes
Morroccan chicken or halloumi with lentil salad and tzatziki.
traybake potatoes/ chicken thigh/ spinach in curry spices with mango chutney, red onion in lemon juice and yoghurt stirred through
spaghetti arrabiata +/- prawns and salad
puff pastry tart with mascarpone/ capers/ fried onions/ spinach on top (smoked salmon on non veggie half, feta on veggie half) with new potatoes and salad
Veggie curry with roast cauliflower and roast sweet potatoes, spinach, lentils and coconut milk.
Jacket potatoes with beans/ cheese/ tuna/ salad
Harissa and halloumi couscous (gousto recipe. Or maybe hello fresh)
lasagne- either mince beef or spinach and tomato.
mussels and part baked bread
Pearl barley cooked in stock with peas, mange tout and a honey/ mustard/ olive oil dressing, +/- hot smoked salmon.
pancetta, asparagus and Pearl barley risotto with goats cheese.
lentil Dahl with naan.
tortellini with pesto and salad.

Bonus is around £180 for a fortnight for 6 people for dinner, plus leftovers, though 2 days a week don’t have veggie options. Works for us as we have those days when DD is out!
lunches are leftovers/ wraps (often with leftovers/ quiche/ toasties/ salad
Breakfast is cereal/ porridge/ egg on toast/ peanut butter toast.

Neodymium · 16/07/2024 21:35

So many having fajitas! Do you have them with chicken or mince? Would love an easy recipe.

this week:
Sunday we had Texas chilli with rice (but no chilli powder 😆)
Monday pan fried salmon, mash and greens
Tuesday butter chicken rice and naan
Wed prob have frozen pizza as there is a football game here we are watching
Thurs usually have leftovers
Fri takeaway
Sat I’m planning to make a big pot of pea and ham soup and homemade bread rolls.

I add the veggies into the meals, we rarely have them on the side because it’s just easier.

Lordofmyflies · 16/07/2024 21:36

This week;

Sunday - Usually a Roast. This week was Chicken. I also prep Monday's Dinner

In no specific order. We have a fairly small rotation with fussy ish eaters.

Chipolatas, beans and baguette
Cheese toasties and salad
Chicken Teriyaki
Beef stroganoff
Potato gratin, ham, salad and baguette
Roast on a Sunday
Pizza (of course!)
Burgers once in a while
Seabass in butter and lemon with rice and green beans ( they're fussy eaters but they eat that, feeling very lucky!)
Salmon in parcels ( with cherry toms and celery)
