To do my make up on the train?

Does it bother you when you see people doing this? If so, why?

The thing that puts me off is while it's not 'unhygienic' per se, if you use any powders at all you are creating dust and therefore dirt that will just end up ingrained in the seats etc. So it's a slightly selfish action really, to me.
But I do also find it fascinating - I find it hard to spend more than 5 minutes on make up myself even for a big occasion, and have no idea how people keep a steady hand on the train! How do people do it?

People are creating dust regardless though. One of the components of dust is dead skin cells.

Not getting up early enough to do your makeup is laziness.

Or a sensible use of half an hour where you're not doing anything anyway. I'm commuting by train tomorrow and the 25 min journey plus 20 mins on the tube is such an annoying waste of time that I could be putting to better use! I have to wake up earlier to just sit doing nothing. (My normal office is only a 5-10 min drive away).

I've never done my make up on the train - I only wear a little bit of concealer under my eyes, and some mascara so it takes me 30 seconds.

Sounds like you could do with a lie in occasionally. Have you thought about doing your mascara on the train?

I don’t use mascara or need it ;-)
I have a lie-in at weekends, thanks.

Biglovemarg · 16/07/2024 09:10

Doesn't bother me at all, in fact like some others have said I'm always slightly in awe at women who can apply eye make up with such precision on a moving train.

So much more annoying to sit next to someone manspreading or playing their music really loud.

I've only seen it once and it was quite entertaining seeing all the contorsions she was going through.

Or a bit like watching a 'Bake-off' cake being decorated from plain icing to an artistic triumph.

This made me laugh out loud. DH calls it drawing a face on a face.

I've never witnessed it but with all that jerking, I'm going to reword this to bustling about on uneven ground, I'd be worried about getting a mascara wand in my eye.

Have you considered more sleep might make you less prickly?

People are creating dust regardless though. One of the components of dust is dead skin cells.

If you wash your face properly there are no dead skin cells, they’re removed by your flannel or muslin cloth.

Bonjovispjs · 16/07/2024 09:12

I don't like it, but I'm not sure why I don't like it. Gurning mascara faces are quite entertaining though.

Mayhemmumma · 16/07/2024 09:12

I find it really unpleasant if it's beyond a quick bit of lippy etc. There's something very self absorbed about it. Every other person who wears make up manages to slap it on at home.
Oh god and don't film it while talking crap either.

BluebirdBoogie · 16/07/2024 08:40

If you're not worried about keeping up appearances then why wear make up in the first place?

I care about keeping up appearances at work but not bothered about what random strangers on a train think about me. So I'd rather apply on the train than not wear any make up.

I used to do make up on the train where I had to take a 4 hour train ride. My make up is pretty minimal. It wouldn't have lasted a 4 hour train in which I also slept.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 16/07/2024 09:14

It’s not a problem unless there are sprays involved because chances are it could leave residue on the seat or the people around get sprayed too. You said no sprays so you are fine.

SomewhatContraryMary · 16/07/2024 09:14

I am shocked that anyone has an issue with it. Honestly, as a mum of 3 under 10s commuting at 6am for over an hour, the time I have on the train is one of the few parts of the day that is just mine and if I want to do my makeup I could not give a flying fig what anyone else thinks about it as long as I'm not taking up another seat with my things or spraying perfumes!

i find far more annoying people who wear headphones that have the music on loud enough to hear for the people around them, or people who talk loudly on the phone.

neverbeenskiing · 16/07/2024 09:15

Not getting up early enough to do your makeup is laziness.

Or efficiency. They may not be spending the extra time at home lying in bed, they might be doing a workout, reading, putting a load of washing on, walking the dog, having breakfast with a loved one or any number of things. I think most people who do their make up on the train are making a conscious choice because it suits them rather than having to do it because they've failed to get up early enough.

CissOff · 16/07/2024 09:15

It annoys me but I can’t really put my finger on why…possibly because it feels a bit performative?

I can’t say I’ve really thought about it too much but I know I get a flash of irritation when people do 😂

We will have to agree to disagree.

I get that putting makeup on in the train fits the modern narrative of ‘it’s my right to do what I want, wherever and whenever that might be’. It’s not illegal so crack on! My opinion does not matter 🤷🏼‍♀️

Personally I applaud someone lying in bed with a coffee for an extra 15 minutes and then doing a bit of makeup on the train much more than the people waking up at 4:30am to martyr themselves! 👌

SnapdragonToadflax · 16/07/2024 09:18

I tend to do my base at home then do eyes on the train. Sometimes do it all though, if I'm running late.

I don't see how it's unhygienic - I try not to touch anything on trains, so when I sit down in my seat my hands are the same as when I left my house. It's more productive than scrolling Instagram for 40 minutes, and much less annoying than music played out loud or a long phonecall.

It's sluttish
Do your ablutions at home.

It's what?

neverbeenskiing · 16/07/2024 09:18

I find this pov interesting. Few people see the morning commute as a reciprocal, social experience. IME most people are reading or have headphones in. Others may he getting on with some work. But few people interact. So aren't most of us "self-absorbed" on the train?

rwalker · 16/07/2024 09:18

Make doesn’t smell do it’s a crack on from me

Longdueachange · 16/07/2024 09:19

I'm not offended by it, but I certainly wouldn't do it. Applying makeup in public would be what my mother would describe as common or poor etiquette.

Isn’t it the opposite of performative since they probably don’t give a shit what anyone around them thinks?

Diyextension · 16/07/2024 09:19

I like watching people do make up on trains , i think its a good use of dead time that train journeys are.

Chucklecheeks01 · 16/07/2024 09:20

Better than doing it whilst driving which I see on a daily basis. That bothers me!

Marchitectmummy · 16/07/2024 09:21

If nothing brushes, or spills onto me I don't care. But I've sat behind someone who blew their brushes clean after applying make up so it all was circulating in the air around me. I don't think that is on at all.

Nail varnish is an absolute no, why do I want to breathing that toxic junk.
