To do my make up on the train?

Does it bother you when you see people doing this? If so, why?

OP posts:
Flocke · 16/07/2024 08:42

It doesn't particularly bother me. But I don't like it when, as others have said, it involves spraying things or even blusher/bronzer when the person starts using a huge brush to flick it on their cheeks and the powder is raining down on me as well.
And yes I've also seen people flossing, cutting and painting nails and toenails, plucking eyebrows and chin hairs, eating last night's curry in a tupperware box etc. All gross. The joys of getting the tube in London.

Cinocino · 16/07/2024 08:42

It doesn’t bother me. Some of these comments are crazy, you assume the person is lazy? For doing makeup on the train?

I assume they’ve probably got a long commute and want to maximise their time and productivity.

Emotss · 16/07/2024 08:43

Don't be that person. It is unclassy.

I once watched someone spend most of a two hour train journey doing their hair and makeup. Mesmerising.

My full make up takes 10 minutes, would much rather do it at home but each to their own.

Me too, it was fascinating, couldn’t take my eyes off her! The train was practically empty but I really admired her chutzpah, it looked like she was getting ready for a hospitality job in London.

PooledEstimate · 16/07/2024 08:45

I’ve always thought it was weird tbh. For me it’s quite a private process; I can’t imagine doing it in public.

Ethylred · 16/07/2024 08:47

It's not as bad as breaking up with your boyfriend over the phone in floods of tears and snot but it's still forcing strangers to witness something private.

Thatsfrenchforstopahorse · 16/07/2024 08:47

Oh all the annoying things people do on trains that irritate me - this is not one of them.

phoenixrosehere · 16/07/2024 08:47

ZenNudist · 16/07/2024 08:28

I dont know why it looks odd. I've never thought about it but I am slightly judging. Why not do it in a toilet? I guess I just assume a person is lazy disorganised and vain if you see them doing it in the morning. If I see them doing it in the evening I assume they are going to something where they need to look nice coming from somewhere where make up not needed. So then I assume they are busy and have a life! It still looks a bit lacking in class.

The lighting in my bathroom when I was getting up was horrendous and little natural light because the bathroom faced the neighbours house.

I was walking to the train station as the sun was rising most of the year. By time I got on the train, I had a better view of what I would look like for the day and would apply a bit of make-up.

But why?

I once sat in front of someone clipping their toe nails !

What's "private" about make up? I don't understand.

Oh no. Heaven forbid a stranger makes a sweeping judgement about how classy someone is based on incredibly limited information.

Says more about you to be honest!

Needmorelego · 16/07/2024 08:50

As long as there's no nail polish (the smell can be a bit strong) I either wouldn't notice (too busy looking out the window) or would be absolutely fascinated.

Ratisshortforratthew · 16/07/2024 08:51

redfacebigdisgrace · 16/07/2024 08:16

I don’t like it. It’s too intimate.

Intimate?! It’s hardly someone sat plucking their nipple hairs. I really don’t get the issue, I’m with you OP.

TooTiredOfThisShit · 16/07/2024 08:51

I find it weirdly intimate, and I would never do it myself. But it doesn't bother me what other people do (assuming they're not spraying anything, or painting nails, or something actively antisocial)

Ps I don't know why, but I find the cringiest thing to see is people plucking their eyebrows in public 😕

YouveGotAFastCar · 16/07/2024 08:53

I think it's a bit odd - It feels like a strange thing to do in public - but it wouldn't bother me. You seem very conscious of it, though, so I'd suggest that means you either don't like doing it in public, or you can feel people looking/watching/reacting on your particular route and it's getting to you.

I once saw someone file her feet on a train. Left a big horrific pile of filed skin on the seat next to her. Grim 🤢

liverburd1 · 16/07/2024 08:11

Unhygenic??? 😂😂😂😂

Have you been on the underground? It's full of dust and shit.
Blow your nose after a journey and see the dirt

ricecrispiecakes · 16/07/2024 08:53

I really don't understand why people get so worked about this 😂

ricecrispiecakes · 16/07/2024 08:54

@Gingerdancedbackwards but what does that have to do with make-up and why does it make putting mascara on unhygienic? Confused

Gingerdancedbackwards · 16/07/2024 08:54

northchesterforest · 16/07/2024 08:15

I can't see how my particular routine is unhygienic at all (no spritz or spray!) and I think life is already busy and stressful to have to worry about keeping up appearances...
God forbid someone sees the before and after transformation in public?

The hate all feels very 1950s to me. Not sure it's any difference to eating a sandwich on the train? ('Oh god forbid, eat your food in private!)

It's sluttish
Do your ablutions at home.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 16/07/2024 08:55

Unhygienic = a train is fairly dirty environment. Which means that your hands are also fairly dirty. But that’s your choice… so why not?

I personally frequently re-apply sunscreen on the train, which is just as unhygienic….

Why are you asking for people's views if your immediate response is to mock them?

You've obviously already made up your mind so have at it.

HeidiWhole · 16/07/2024 08:55

I'm in awe of anyone who can apply make-up on the move.
I'm not keen on seeing it but don't really know why and certainly wouldn't say anything. I'd just assume it saves them time.
I would rather be next to someone doing their mascara than someone eating a full-on dinner though Confused

Luio · 16/07/2024 08:56

People regularly put their feet up on the train seats, scroll through loud annoying stuff on their phones, get drunk, eat smelly food, talk loudly on their phones. With all this going on I don’t see how anyone could find someone putting on make up annoying.
