Went out for a lovely meal this evening with a friend.
It was about 9.30pm when we finally finished eating and asked for a decaf coffee each.
Clearly, it wasn’t decaf, given I’m wide awake and I never have a problem sleeping.
It’s so frustrating when this happens!!!
Pointless even trying to sleep for hours now…….

That's so annoying for you.

Hope you get some sleep soon.

Heelworkhero · 16/07/2024 01:08

Thanks. It’s not the first time and I just end up kicking myself for assuming I’ll be given what I’ve actually ordered.
I can’t tell the difference while I’m drinking it.
It was coffee with cream, rather than milk and so delicious………. So totally not worth it though…….
I’ve got 5 hours of hard physical work tomorrow……… 🙄

There have been instances of people with heart issues dying after being served regular coffee instead of decaf. While nothing serious has happened to you, I think you’re well within your rights to be frustrated and make a complaint.

Whilst I think the restaurant was lax, I find it difficult to believe that people with such serious heart conditions that death occurs after a single cup actually drink coffee not made by themselves (or someone close to them).

But do link the data.

An extremely rare one off, but not people.

Heelworkhero · 16/07/2024 04:25

I’m still awake!! Up in a few hours……
I’ve read, opened the window, done relaxing and meditation………

One of the downsides of being caffeine free is how hyper sensitive to it you are, if you ever have any accidentally.

Eat a banana if you have any, I often get too high on red bull and find the potassium helps bring it down

SillyQuail · 16/07/2024 06:00

This happens to me all the time (caffeine free since first pregnancy) and I now get horrible symptoms from even one shot of espresso - insomnia, stomach upset, palpitations, anxiety, nausea, the list is endless. Hope you managed to get some sleep!

Yes completely agree. I don't drink caffeinated coffee or tea so seem to react more strongly to it if I have it now.

AzureAnt · 16/07/2024 06:35

Isn't it more likely that finishing a meal at 930pm is the reason you can't sleep,?

roundspongecake · 16/07/2024 06:55

Are you sure it's the coffee and not the excitement coupled with a big meal?
If it is the caffeine drink loads of water.

Next time I wouldn't risk it. No one needs coffee of any kind that late at night and even decaffeinated has caffeine in

Has there? Any evidence for this.

ricecrispiecakes · 16/07/2024 07:06

Are you 100% sure it's the coffee keeping you awake?

ZenNudist · 16/07/2024 07:11

I always check "is it decaf"? As they put it down. Often I'd know half way through the cup as it hits me.

I usually write an email of complaint. Often I get offered a free coffee though funnily enough I don't tend to go back!

ZenNudist · 16/07/2024 07:14

I don't know about dying but I once had a caffeine / alcohol combo thst made my heart race and I had to go home ruining a night out.

CatMumSlave · 16/07/2024 07:19

@roundspongecake

even decaffeinated has caffeine in

What??

@roundspongecake

even decaffeinated has caffeine in

What??

Yep, because it’s removed not added, depending on the brand there will be around 2-15mg of caffeine in a decaf coffee (about the same as a glass of cola)

CatMumSlave · 16/07/2024 07:19

@roundspongecake

even decaffeinated has caffeine in

What??

It absolutely does

A cup of decaf is about 2mg of caffeine compared to 95mg in a cup of normal coffee

CatMumSlave · 16/07/2024 07:19

@roundspongecake

even decaffeinated has caffeine in

What??

It does, you can't remove 100% of the caffeine from coffee.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 16/07/2024 07:28

Is it not widely known that there's still a small amount of caffeine in decaf coffee??

Apparently not!

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 16/07/2024 07:38

Yes there is still caffeine in decaf.

I also get the same symptoms OP describes if I have too much sugar - did you have a big dessert, OP? Or some fizzy wines - might that be another possibility?

I would definitely complain I have had similar and do have a heart issue where caffeine will put my heart in to atrial fibrillation for many hours, it’s horrible!

I always confirm it’s decaf when it’s brought to me and sometimes have mentioned it’s not just a preference it’s a real biggy health wise if it’s not decaf , always feel a bit 😱saying it but it’s true.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 16/07/2024 07:28

Is it not widely known that there's still a small amount of caffeine in decaf coffee??

I knew that but it’s not enough to trip my heart in to atrial fibrillation so must be a very negligible amount

And you can prove they served caffinated coffee how?
Any number of reasons could be causing insomnia
Caffine vs no caffine is barely there, so psychological

Gosh @Gingerdancedbackwards it's amazing that you know the Op's body better than she does
