Went out for a lovely meal this evening with a friend.
It was about 9.30pm when we finally finished eating and asked for a decaf coffee each.
Clearly, it wasn’t decaf, given I’m wide awake and I never have a problem sleeping.
It’s so frustrating when this happens!!!
Pointless even trying to sleep for hours now…….

@b0rnSad I’m like you. I often take a mug of black coffee up to bed with me to drink in bed before going to sleep!

Someone with a caffeine allergy shouldn't be drinking decaf coffee.

That’s what this person would drink. Must’ve not have been a serious allergy, but can only go off what they told me.

While we're on the topic there's also alcohol in non alcohol beer etc. That's why you need to be 18 to buy it

Lidl sell a beer with 0.0% alcohol in it. It's lovely too 😊

I'm really not that sensitive to caffeine. I'm amazed people have such strong reactions to such small amounts.

I'm not a big coffee (or tea) drinker. But I have one coffee in the morning.

Sometimes caffeine, sometimes decaf. I can't tell the difference when I'm drinking it, or after.

I don't drink alcohol but will occasionally have a coke in the evenings. Never noticed the caffeine affecting my ability to sleep.

(Absolutely not the point) but after reading some comments I'm a bit worried about myself
I can fall asleep after any caffeine, sometimes I've even fallen asleep after drinking a redbull Grin I could have a coffee or tea or can of coke at 9.30 and be asleep within my usual falling asleep time, is there something wrong with me?

I'm the same, I've been so surprised reading comment after comment from people who are so affected by caffeine.

I have a coffee in the morning, sometimes decaf, sometimes not - makes no difference to me.

Sometimes have a cup of tea before bed - fine

Sometimes a can of coke - also fine

🤷‍♀️

feelingbattered · 16/07/2024 17:07

Apparently Pepsi Max has lots of caffeine

LavenderFlowers · 16/07/2024 17:16

I would let them know OP. Many people can't have caffeine and it may make them more aware of how important it is to serve decaf

I always order decaf and I think waiters find it annoying that I make sure it's decaf when it is handed to me

CheltenhamLady · 16/07/2024 17:50

I am extremely sensitive to caffeine. It makes me dizzy and sick. My heart races and it causes palpitations. When I order decaff I do the same as others have mentioned, and confirm when the server puts it down that it is actually decaff.

I was in Venice many years ago and ordered tea as usual, but they didn't have it and so I had a coffee. I only had a couple of sips and I was almost out of it. I travelled up the Grand Canal on a waterbus and I had no recollection of it at all. I have only just started to drink decaff after many years of not having coffee.

I’m the same. I drink coffee all the time, a cup every hour or even more often..and my final drink at bedtime is coffee. I have sometimes wished it would keep me awake. I never drink coke or any soft drinks other than fruit juice, just coffee. I’ve always heard people are affected by caffeine but I can drink shots of black coffee from the coffee machine all day. Costs a fortune in beans lol

mylefthand · 19/07/2024 14:13

Caffeine gives me horrible palpitations, I would have been annoyed by this too!

JillMW · 19/07/2024 14:14

I was working in a bar, one night we ran out of regular coffee beans. Two ladies ordered decaf and so no need for me to tell them we had no regular. Later they said they would sue the bar as they both were affected by “ the regular coffee they had been served”. The bar owner had a lot of fun as there were already comments on trip advisor saying it was a shame about lack of regular coffee and there was a note on every menu as well as on the bar board.

There have been instances of people with heart issues dying after being served regular coffee instead of decaf. While nothing serious has happened to you, I think you’re well within your rights to be frustrated and make a complaint.

After ONE coffee? 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

More likely that it was eating late etc than one coffee to be honest.

Nevermind - sounds like you had a good time and I'm sure you'll survive work 😂

All coke does.

noctilucentcloud · 19/07/2024 14:55

I'm very sensitive to caffeine because of dizziness issues. I wouldn't assume it wasn't decaf, from my experience some decaf coffees (especially nice ones!) can contain a fair bit of caffeine, enough to make me feel ill so presumably also enough to keep you up. I also think that decaf through coffee machines also sometimes has residual caffeine. Decaf tea has a much lower amount of caffeine as well as the naturally caffeine free ones like peppermint, roobosh etc.

This - I suffer from allergies, it's not acceptable.
People are sensitive to caffeine/can't drink it for various health reasons, you should be able to trust that you actually get what you asked for.

I mean I have googled instances of people dying from one cup of coffee and found a big fat zero!

It's not just about dying though, is it.
A lot of people can have say heart palpitations from consuming caffeine for example.

Yes, sorry, I was trying to quote person who said people die from it, not you. Of course it’s not nice to have heart palpitations but I dispute its going to kill you.

Bluebirdover · 19/07/2024 16:15

@BeachParty but you were agreeing with someone who said people died, it's not true!

People have absolutely died after drinking a beverage that they thought was caffeine-free. This young woman was the subject of a wrongful death lawsuit last year in the US. She drank one cup of lemonade of which the caffeine content was not properly advertised. Another man died after drinking the same beverage. These types of fatal incidents are certainly rare and usually linked to existing heart defects. But for those with milder caffeine sensitivity, symptoms like tachycardia, migraine and severe agitation are still extremely unpleasant, unacceptable and avoidable.

Panera Bread faces suit from family of student who died after drinking Charged Lemonade

Sarah Katz, 21, had a heart condition and wasn’t aware of the drink’s caffeine content, which exceeded that of cans of Red Bull and Monster energy drinks combined, according to a legal filing.

This isn’t coffee.

This isn’t coffee.

I was mistaken that it was coffee but it’s still caffeine so materially the same as if it had been coffee.

Also worth mentioning that tachycardia is not harmless – if your heart beats too fast for too long it can cause permanent damage which can lead to life-threatening issues later on, even if you don’t realise it at the time.

Bluebirdover · 21/07/2024 14:04

@mutationseagull this is about coffee containing caffeine, your post is irrelevant.
