To find the Ambani wedding distasteful

I know everyone can do what they like , it's their money . But such an extravagant event in a place where a large proportion of the population live in slum conditions is rather unsettling.? Plus the bride is stunning but the groom unfortunately does not come across as an individual with a lot

of intelligence . Before I get flamed , he and his family are encouraging the public to view them and I guess are expecting admiration.

I also find it gross when a celeb graces a homeless charity with their presence wearing a dress that costs thousands but apparently they are doing so much to support the cause

Walkaround · 15/07/2024 08:10

They are also sharing their wealth out like sweets if they are paying the likes of Boris Johnson to go out there. He can’t even afford to pay for his own wallpaper.

The oddest thing (not really of course) was the groom and a couple of other blokes wearing trainers.

I believe they were some bespoke designers jobbies! But yes why not wear shoes. Doesn’t mean they have class if they’re rich. But I find so many rich people don’t have class, they’re just tacky.

Apparently the groom has severe asthma and has lots of steroids hence the weight?

AutismHelp1980 · 15/07/2024 08:11

Also I wonder if anyone from the Sunak family was there? Interesting Rishi wasn’t!

Busybeemumm · 15/07/2024 08:21

There is a video of mother of the groom walking hand in hand with KK (who was dressed so inappropriately) I felt so cringe for her! Why did they invite all these western celebs. The Bollywood actors I can understand but not Hollywood! So tacky. The worst is all these people will come and enjoy the wedding and still laugh at them. Stunning bride though.

I read somewhere that Rishi's in-laws although very rich are also very humble and raised their kids in a simple way. All this would be tacky for them too I imagine.

Dweetfidilove · 15/07/2024 08:25

Sounds like a right Royal wedding / funeral / coronation then. Millions spent on vulgar displays of wealth and celebrity, all while food banks are keeping families from starving 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Whatabonkersworld · 15/07/2024 08:26

It's pretty obscene when you consider if they donated just a small amount of the wedding budget annually, the UK would no longer need to send aid to India.

They paid guests to be there according to twitter so Boris Johnson was paid to turn up like a scruffy twat

Ah, that figures. I wondered who was paying his fares and hotel costs, it makes sense that they are additionally paying him just to be there.

This thread is just people displaying typical Western European cultural superiority complex “

No it isn’t. I began my career working for an investment company that was heavily Indian based. I very quickly realised that class was all important. It is, frankly, despicable. People look down on others because of the caste they were born into. It’s reprehensible.

Ah yes, so different to here. Someone from a Wigan council estate would never be looked down on in this country…

howrudeforme · 15/07/2024 08:29

According to times of India Justin beiber paid $10 million to perform.

Letsgodancing · 15/07/2024 08:31

I don't get bringing in all these international guests when you don't even know them properly like the kardashians and pay for them to attend. I wouldn't be suprised if Tony and Boris have had actual dealings with Mr ambani, and even Rishi considering his links in India although no photos of him there have come out.
There was a clip of the groom and at one point he looked exhausted.
It was a display of extreme Wealth but they do seem to have given back in certain ways, they did a ceremony for under privilege couples to get married and gave money, white goods and things needed to start married life, even money so the women would have financial independence. At one of their pre wedding parties they paid for 510000 people to have a meal. This is probably small fry compared to what's been paid for the actual wedding though.

Not at all. Many people have made exactly the same comparison with the Royal weddings. Tacky doesn’t have cultural or geographic limitations.

Frankly I find Royal weddings every bit as vulgar. As was last year's Coronation on the back of a lavish Jubilee and funeral, during a cost of living crisis.

TallulahBetty · 15/07/2024 08:39

I actually don't even know who they are! Anyone else?

The father of the groom is the ninth richest man in the world and the richest in Asia. Hence why everyone is queuing up to kiss the ring.

Chucklesisters · 15/07/2024 08:44

I have Indian heritage so have been following the spectacle closely. You’ll be delighted to know there’s another raft of celebrations up here in London for FOUR days next week, with Adele and Taylor Swift rumoured to be performing and the same Bollywood celebs attending along with a rash of Hollywood celebs.

Delightfully tacky.

deeahgwitch · 15/07/2024 08:49

When I think of the poverty in the world I find the money spent on the wedding celebration obscene.
Utterly disgusting.

noworklifebalance · 15/07/2024 08:51

Meh, can’t get worked up about it. Whether you spend a £1000, £10 000 or millions on a wedding, there will always be someone or a charity that could have benefitted from that money.
A PP mentioned that the amount spent on the wedding was <1% of the family’s overall wealth. Who knows what they have donated to charitable causes - perhaps nothing, perhaps a little, perhaps a lot?

The Royal Family have spent a plenty of money on events, holidays, homes, castles, weddings etc and associated security over the years.

Chucklesisters · 15/07/2024 08:52

I do worry about the huge food waste though - I can’t imagine the Ambanis being thoughtful enough to distribute leftovers post each event to charity organisations that then feed the poor and homeless.

Nelliemellie · 15/07/2024 08:54

I hope the celebrities who got paid to attend gave large donations to Indian charities/ some got paid 5 million dollars/pounds? Probably not.

To be honest no self respecting Hollywood celebs turned up. The Kardashians are just clowns for hire. They’ll go anywhere for money.

PlanetJanette · 15/07/2024 08:56

If we focused less on whether we approve of how rich people spend their money and more on whether those rich people should be as rich as they are in the first place, we would be far better off.

I don't really care what a multibillionaire does with whatever of his money is left after he makes a fair contribution to society. What matters is whether he is making that fair contribution to society.

People obsessing about things which they have (and should have) no control over when it comes to the super rich is a very convenient way of keeping people from focusing on the things they do have control over - like the taxation that the super rich are subject to.

Commonsense22 · 15/07/2024 08:57

It is not the inequality that gets me. Billionaires spend everyday on yachts and crazy houses and cars and jewellery and artwork etc.

What I find offensive here is the deliberate attempt to make everyone aware of it. The press must have ignored these celebrations for months but it got to the point where they couldn't anymore, probably because of the high number of high profile celebrities involved. And the fact persons of public interest such as the blairs are thinking it's acceptable to appear at this event for a fee.

The reason they have invited all these people, in drips and drabs, is to ensure the continued focus of the media over a sustained period of time. It's quite calculating.
