To find the Ambani wedding distasteful

I know everyone can do what they like , it's their money . But such an extravagant event in a place where a large proportion of the population live in slum conditions is rather unsettling.? Plus the bride is stunning but the groom unfortunately does not come across as an individual with a lot

of intelligence . Before I get flamed , he and his family are encouraging the public to view them and I guess are expecting admiration.

I am no Tory supporter, but the Sunak- Murty wedding was very simple by Indian billionaire standards!

I think it's being deliberately obtuse to not see the difference between the usual weddings of wealthy and powerful people and this one. It happening in India is neither here nor there, and comparisons to royal or other celebrity weddings are just trying too hard.

We expect expensive garments, abundant food, the odd celebrity performer, massive guest lists and multi-stage celebrations. These types of weddings happen all the time.

This wedding is deliberately seeking out to be noticed by the whole world for it's spending and obscene display of wealth. A bit like an informal guiness world record of wedding spending attempt. It's completely different and deliberately seeking to shock.

But there are often multiple parts to a wedding in India (or at least Hindu & Sihk) People like to compare the wealth against the poverty in India but completely ignore the same comparison in other countries like the USA. What have the Ambanis done for the poor is like saying what have the Kardashians done for Skid Row.

I don’t love the crazy displays of wealth but I also don’t like double standards.

Oh dear. Comments like these are so stupid.

Oh yes? Why is that. Please do explain your logic. Because when you havexa discussion, or challenge in a conversation as an adult, the equivalent of 'so there' jusy doesn't wash

Some serious cultural appropriation going on amongst the foreign guests but presumably they're all too stinking rich to care what anyone thinks about it.

I imagine that there was a dress code. Anyone wearing western clothing would stand out like a sore thumb and ruin the photos.

And there are very lavish, multi stage weddings in India regularly. These don't shock.
I have been to Indian weddings and honestly, this is a red herring.

It's not double standards: this couple are very deliberately trying to spend as outrageously as possible.

Boris and Carrie Johnson there too.

She looked like she was trying to out-bride the bride with her outfit…🙄

Drfosters · 15/07/2024 07:34

Just remember though that that money it cost didn’t disappear into thin air- the money they spend paid suppliers. I’m all for rich people spending their money rather than hoarding it!

but yes it was just a crazy wedding- hope they never split up!

No chance of that! Her’s was prob £1-£2k max, some of the brides outfits were priceless.

There's plenty of child poverty in this country yet every day, every Saturday, people have tacky, expensive weddings
The hypocrisy on this thread is breathtaking, as is the barely-disguised racism

The scale of poverty in India is orders of magnitude greater than here. This wedding almost unimaginable in its spending.

You simply can't make an equivalence to your average British wedding and its relationship to poverty here.

The principle remains the same no matter the figures involved.

Exactly.

However poverty is a relative concept and dc in the UK who are in poverty is at 4.7 million when measured against the society they participate in.
That’s a lot for our small country.

Marchitectmummy · 15/07/2024 07:38

They should do what they want with their own money and life. All who are disliking it aeem to have been soaking up the coverage of it....

Maybe not doing that would be the most obvious way to show its not accepted.

Tony and Cherie Blair looked a bit weird, like aliens.

I know exactly what you mean!
And Johnson looked like Worzel Gummidge.

TorroFerney · 15/07/2024 07:46

The oddest thing (not really of course) was the groom and a couple of other blokes wearing trainers.

MikeRafone · 15/07/2024 07:52

Pieceofpurplesky · 14/07/2024 21:13

They paid guests to be there according to twitter so Boris Johnson was paid to turn up like a scruffy twat

Is the joke on Alexander Johnson or the Ambani family..?

Is it like paying for the court jester in modern day times

Viviennemary · 15/07/2024 07:55

Never even heard of these people or their wedding. Which reading this is a good thing.

I am of Indian origin. Can only speak for myself, but I don't think being horrified at this excessively vulgar display of wealth is racist. I am. Many Indians are. Even in a country where it is custom to invite everyone you have ever met to your wedding.

Many Indians are also appalled by inequality- we aren't completely callous as people think we are- but it's a huge problem to solve, beyond the power of any one person. Some progress has been made- millions have been lifted out of poverty- but nowhere nearly enough because of the scale of the issue.

I also don't think it's cultural appropriation for people to dress in Indian clothes, though Kim K looked beyond tacky and inappropriate. ( but that's her brand).

Other points that people have raised: the space programme, the caste system, and so on are fairly complex and need a whole new thread!

Exactly. I am not Indian but my parents are from the Indian subcontinent and are appalled.

Yes we have poverty here in the UK. But the scale of it in the Indian subcontinent is vomit-inducing. I have seen beggars sitting out in the midday sun, with no limbs and eyes gouged out, waiting for pennies. Very little children helping their mums break piles of rocks for money in the searing heat. Three year olds sleeping alone on the road at night. That’s just a few examples I have witnessed myself. And people in charge do not seem to bat an eyelid.

Because of this, the contrast with this excess is more horrific.

And of course a corrupt government in charge. In my parents’ country, which is poorer than India, the leaders pocket donations to furnish their own mansions whilst the poor just get poorer.

It alll makes me sick. I don’t think it’s helpful to say the situation in India is exactly the same as the UK. It is not racist to point out the huge disparity.

Though of course any ostentation is tacky to me, whether that’s in Chelsea, LA or Mumbai. This family is of course free to spend as they wish. And we are free to criticise.

It's in the press, to make an opinion you'd surely have to read an article about it in the first place otherwise how would you know?

Spending one and a half million £ on a wedding is extreme and will of course make news headlines as it is so extreme especially in a country where the difference between rich and poor is so vast

Marchitectmummy · 15/07/2024 07:57

Gingerdancedbackwards · 15/07/2024 06:14

Look, people in this country get themselves into thousands of pounds of debt to have their 'fairytale' wedding. You have engagement parties, hen/stag events, bridal showers, etc.
Then you invite people unwanted, but are family so you have to, or their are friends of the parents.
You have flowers, favours, meals etc.
People even forgo property deposits to spend £10000000s on a wedding.
So what if its 20k or 2650 mill? None of anyone's fucking business. At least she looked stunning and not like a meringue

This thread is just to have a pop at another culture, isn't it?

Edited

Think it's more about having a pop at the wealthy and expecting them to share their wealth out like sweets....its very on trend to want to criticise anyone with more than the next person.

This wedding cost £600 million. Which is apparently 0.5% of the father's wealth.

Damn right I'm criticising him for not doing more. One hospital and one school is next to nothing. The wedding and the charity work still leaves him with 99% of his wealth.

When you have that level of wealth and spend it so ostentatiously in such an incredibly poor country, you're going to get criticism for it.

I bet the Ambanis would love to be described as “anyone.” 🤣🤣🤣 Nothing to see here - they are just trying to get on quietly with their wealth and not attract too much attention. 🤣
