To find the Ambani wedding distasteful

I know everyone can do what they like , it's their money . But such an extravagant event in a place where a large proportion of the population live in slum conditions is rather unsettling.? Plus the bride is stunning but the groom unfortunately does not come across as an individual with a lot

of intelligence . Before I get flamed , he and his family are encouraging the public to view them and I guess are expecting admiration.

I seriously hope donations to charities were made instead of unnecessary gifts to people who obviously want for nothing.

Neveranynamesleft · 14/07/2024 21:27

I wonder what sort of gifts they received...

A lot of gilded and tacky stuff. Lots of tasteless bling.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 14/07/2024 21:34

I agree with the distaste. These are private people, no matter how wealthy. So different to any of the Royal or celebrity weddings which seem relatively quite cheap in comparison.

Obscene . To see such extravagance . O for the days when the Mega rich paid for hospitals schools and libraries !

The Ambanis have a school, a hospital, a cultural centre and various other charitable iniatives. Though I expect they are for CSR purposes. Nevertheless, they exist.

Santasjingleballs · 14/07/2024 21:38

The wedding is expensive yet looks so cheap. It was obviously an arranged marriage to keep the wealth between them as i can guarantee that the bride would not marry such an unattractive groom. Quite sad that they have to pay celebs to attend. They’re probably quiet p1ssed off at the Donald trump event as they wanted to be the hot topic in every media outlet.

As soon as the Kardashian’s turned up - I knew it was going to be tacky. Why does Kim always have to upstage the bride

Because she is absolutely desperate to remain relevant, and it’s getting harder and harder for her to do so.

Peoneve · 14/07/2024 21:45

But so much about affluence in Mumbai/India is a bit distasteful

Go into space but millions without a toilet
Individuals spend £1000s in the Taj everyday whilst there is so much poverty directly outside (and unlike tourists wealthy locals seem just to accept it all) .

The street vendors with large stalls (news, boot clean, juice) sleep on the streets outside the Taj with their families.

I saw from the photos that the Kardashians were in the Taj- my 2nd favourite hotel in the world (but if they were outside their room they were not in the best suite. I wonder who got that?)

thenightsky · 14/07/2024 21:50

I've never heard of ambani so had a quick Google. Groom has a look of a hybrid Demis Roussos and Russell Brand.

Narcissisticflipflop · 14/07/2024 21:52

No need for personal insults imo.

Drop in the ocean compared to their wealth. My friends parents have set up a school, hospital and an orphanage in their home country . They’re not obscenely rich, but well off. (£1 mill house and assets totalling about 3 or 4 million)

tara66 · 14/07/2024 21:54

You don't say?!
It's what they do!
You do you and they will do themselves.

justasmalltownmum · 14/07/2024 21:56

They paid the stars to perform.

They didn't pay people to attend. They called highly influential people as connections were being made. Trade with India etc

ileftmypotatointheovenallnight · 14/07/2024 21:57

How is it that different to any other celebrity wedding? Other than there were some public photos circulated by the media. These kinds of weddings happen all the time.

Peterbeardwy · 14/07/2024 21:59

Why was John Cena there ???!!!!

India must have the most unequal society worldwide . Unbelievable that there can be so much decadence and such absolute poverty side by side and that none of those people in attendance appears to have a conscience .Shame on them all.

We really are not in a position to point fingers. “The UK has very high inequality of income compared to other developed countries; the 9th most unequal incomes of 38 OECD countries (OECD, 2022).
The UK’s wealth inequality is much more severe than income inequality, with the top fifth taking 36% of the country’s income and 63% of the country’s wealth, while the bottom fifth have only 8% of the income and only 0.5% of the wealthaccording to the Office for National Statistics.
Inequality of wealth and income fell during the 20th century, but began rising again in the 1980s.” https://equalitytrust.org.uk/scale-economic-inequality-uk/

How Has Inequality Changed? - Equality Trust

Levels of inequality changed dramatically over the course of the 20th century. Overall income inequality fell from a high point in the 1930s, remained fairly static until 1979, and then increased dramatically from 1979 to 1991. Since 1991, the trend ha...

I agree it's distasteful but not so unlike the pageantry of our own royal weddings. It is said to be a show of strength and the reason so many powerful people are getting involved is to show their allegiance to what is a very powerful family in terms of business.

I agree it's a drop, or maybe even a molecule!

Martymcfly24 · 14/07/2024 22:05

I read they had a mass wedding for 50 poor couples and gifted them gold jewellery and groceries etc.

Drop in the ocean with the 8000 dollar cost of the invites. (Which looked ridiculous)

CookingApron · 14/07/2024 22:06

I agree, it's grotesque, but it's kind of fascinating too. I can't look away. The groom gave the bride a 24c gold sari that cost millions. And the jewels! Was reading about the different brooches he has worn. And the watches he wears....

I was astonished that they apparently paid for 50 local weddings as part of the celebrations. Only 50???!! Jeeeez. Tight as.

Don't agree with comments about the groom's looks though. No need. He was a handsome young man and has apparently been unwell. He and the bride have known each other since they were kids and have always been friends.

I wondered why KK wore red. A bit like wearing a long white dress to a western wedding. Didn't know she had been paid to go though.

ChefsKisser · 14/07/2024 22:08

Absolutely gross. I know it’s a cultural thing but those obscene displays of wealth are just so cringe. Hated Dubai for this reason as well! Bleugh

I think he gained a huge amount of weight due to steroids for asthma and lost most of it.

I mean. Rich and powerful people having an extravagant wedding in an unequal society isn't a new thing, is it?

Haha - I had the same thought

And at least the Ambanis have paid for their own security costs and did the 50 underprivileged couple wedding gifts

I think the conspicuous consumption is a bit extreme but it's definitely not something we haven't seen in the UK too

Actually their wedding was one day, Kate "only" had two dresses, the public were involved and there was no outrageous display of opulence.

Honestly you picked an example of a couple who did "rich and powerful" just right. Any less and "the public" would have been disappointed.

I don't think the two can be compared at all.

StaunchMomma · 14/07/2024 22:31

100% agree.

The level of child poverty and homelessness in India is huge.

Being so indulgent and wasteful in the face of that is both shocking and depressing.
