To find the Ambani wedding distasteful

I know everyone can do what they like , it's their money . But such an extravagant event in a place where a large proportion of the population live in slum conditions is rather unsettling.? Plus the bride is stunning but the groom unfortunately does not come across as an individual with a lot

of intelligence . Before I get flamed , he and his family are encouraging the public to view them and I guess are expecting admiration.

@Walkaround

Look at a map of Mumbai.

The wedding took place in the posh part of the posh suburb of Bandra.
Those roads being closed would not have had a major impact.

But you and your western press know better than me.

Walkaround · 21/07/2024 21:13

@marcopront - since when is The Hindustan Times my Western press?

Walkaround · 21/07/2024 21:18

Also, @marcopront, as you have specified that words matter, what do you think about the use of the words “public event” to describe the Ambani wedding? And why have you repeatedly used the word “caused” as though you believe it to be a synonym of “worsened”?

Walkaround · 21/07/2024 21:26

A map of Mumbai shows the road closures as being in the City’s central business district.

Walkaround · 21/07/2024 21:31

Personally, I would see roads in the central business district as being important roads, the closure of which would most definitely have an impact. It would be an odd central business district if it were in a posh suburb where few people would be impacted.

Walkaround · 21/07/2024 21:40

Quote from the Hindustan Times - not a western newspaper, and read by 8.6 million people across India: “Several roads leading to the Jio World Convention Centre will have restricted access between 1 pm and midnight during those three days. The traffic curbs have sparked outrage online.” The Jio World Convention Centre definitely believes itself to be in the Central business district, not a posh suburb.

marcopront · 22/07/2024 07:17

@Walkaround

Jio World convention centre believes itself to be in Bandra Kurla Complex which is in the posh suburb of Bandra.
It is not in central Mumbai.

It is in a place where ex pats and rich Indians live.

According to this link

There are at least 3 CBDs in Mumbai.

Well I don't think the gap between rich and poor should be flouted so disgustingly

Particularly in India

Grotesque 🤷‍♀️

It has always been like that. Why are you surprised?

Walkaround · 22/07/2024 10:41

@marcopront - thank you for the link, that’s interesting. BKC is clearly a wealthy financial area, with banks, insurance companies, consulates, hotels, concert venues and posh restaurants. The access roads that were closed to non-event traffic for this “public event” were also clearly extremely important for getting into, around and out of the Complex, so I can see why there was an entirely negative public backlash against the closures from those affected by what was in reality a private event. It’s not as if the people most negatively affected would be shy of expressing their opinions, or lacking in the technology to make the world aware of them.

Oh joy! It's coming to the UK!

https://www.indiatimes.com/entertainment/celebs/anant-ambani-radhika-merchant-likely-to-host-post-wedding-festivities-in-london-fans-react-638136.html

This is starting to look like those couples who want to prolong their honeymoon BC they are starting to realise they probably can't stand each other.

At some point real life will have to start. Then what?

Do they think people are interested? Are people interested? My interest is in a kind of fascination with the grotesque, but maybe some people see it as similar to following Taylor Swift in the news?

Walkaround · 22/07/2024 15:53

They don’t care if the little people are interested - they are not doing this to entertain, they are just showcasing their wealth, but more specifically their power and influence. They can cause excessive noise disturbance in Italy and France and block off an entire bay while on a party cruise with impunity. They can effectively block off Mumbai’s financial business district with impunity. They can have a local airport redesignated as an international airport for their convenience. They can buy up a luxury hotel in the UK and block access to it. They can buy the attendance of all sorts of internationally known figures at their parties. They don’t have to be considerate - they are the Ambanis.

Oh no no no this isn't about public interest. This is absolutely about power

I must admit I hadn't heard of them :-). I looked up the Ambani wedding and saw photographs, with text, on 'Hello' magazine. They did look splendid!

The thing is with billionaires and the like, they are very philanthropic and help a lot of people. There is no reason why they should not also splash out on themselves. Weddings are a huge thing for Indian people and everyone stretches themselves for the occasion which is very much enjoyed by all.

There are plenty of rich people in India and they do a lot of good as well as enjoying their wealth. The poor people aspire to that, they work towards being well off and having a better life, it is that sort of society and India is the world's fastest growing major economy.

Don't be too quick to judge.
