Kid's being allowed to go to school late in the morning

Local schools to me are allowing children to go in at 10am tomorrow.

What do we all think about this? I'm on the fence, schools are shouting about absence/lateness/taking them out for holidays but on the other hand the kids may not see this again for a long time. My sisters kids are upset because both parents can't start work late so they have to go to school at usual time, it's unfair to put parents on the spot with this as well.

YABU - It's fine for schools to do this.
YANBU - I don't agree with it.

@Bluebirdover I'm not saying that. That's what @Greenlittecat is implying.

I agree @Munter it's giving parents a free pass to get drunk in that case. If they had to be in school normal time. It would then highlight who is late in or off and keep an eye on these children's livining situation.

By giving them a late start it masks who might need help, encourages the undesirable behaviour and who's looking after the children between this time because the parents are hung over. Which is what you are saying. Better they are in school. Or ar least its the highlighted who needs help because they didn't make it in.... @Greenlittecat

Edited

Parents don't need a free pass to get drunk or take drugs or argue or beat eachother. It just statistically happens more when football, especially big matches where emotions run high, is playing.

Schools have to safegaurd children who have witnessed the above, they also have to cater for children who might be tired because they've had a nice day watching the match with friends and family and who normally go to bed at 8.

It's a balancing act.

It's also not compulsory and you don't need to send your kids in later if you don't agree with it.

No, it wasn't at all.

Adviceneeeeded · 14/07/2024 22:02

@Greenlittecat fair enough. Our school is open and no one is allowed in late anyway.

Just all baffling to me. I have 4 and they go in regardless.

I have 4 too! Mine are staying home until 10 😂

I'm just hoping my toddlers get the memo and have a lie in...

frightenedmum1 · 14/07/2024 22:06

Not our school! Terrible message to send,.if they can't get up they shouldn't stay up late, Not that I think a one off bedtime of 10 oclock in summer, is anything that unusual for most school-aged children

Newrumpus · 14/07/2024 21:56

Reminding them that they supported parents who needed a little extra time to get their children into school after a late night for a key event involving their national sport.

Give over. If your kids can't handle a late night and get up in the morning then they shouldn't have a late night. It's football.

Adviceneeeeded · 14/07/2024 22:07

@Greenlittecat hope you get your lie in!!

Allthingsbrightandbeautifulx · 14/07/2024 22:14

We had an email saying our children MUST be in on time!!
The children were also told at assembly on Friday that they were not allowed to be off or late if they stayed up to watch the football.

Mokel · 14/07/2024 22:16

Go to bed kids

I hate football

Schools can do what they like.
But next time my kids late and they send me a shitty text, I'll be popping in for a chat.

That’s different. When one child is late they miss the teacher telling the class what they need to do plus they disrupt the whole class by arriving midway through a lesson

When they set up for children to be allowed to come in an hour late then the ones who arrive on time will just be doing fun things rather than lessons, so no one is impacted

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 14/07/2024 22:18

They didn’t give me a late start when I was little and stayed up to watch Shuttle launches. Why is football so special ?

AnneElliott · 14/07/2024 22:24

I don't agree with schools doing this. And DS primary didn't. The head rightly used to say if she did this, the next time she tried to enforce attendance it would be thrown back at her!

Petulant. I'm not especially into football but a lot of people are. Its a once in 4 year event and not the same as you being too disorganised to get out the door.

petulant - adjective
UK /ˈpetʃ.ə.lənt/

"easily annoyed and complaining in a rude way like a child"

I would imagine there's a great many people complaining in a rude way like.kids right now.

2 - 1

And yet again the over paid kids have proven how ridiculous paying them so much money really is... Imagine if Cancer Research / domestic abuse support / rape shelters had 1/2 the funding of a meaningless sport..

@Julyshouldbesunny

Women won 2 years ago, can't see why this is being made a bigger deal! Also why on earth is the game on so late, started at 9pm in Germany! If they had started at 6pm certain ( 5pm bst) it would have been better for all including the people whose buses stop at 9.30pm , here!

Iirr it didn't affect a school day when the Lionesses won.

Newrumpus · 14/07/2024 22:26

SummerDays2020 · 14/07/2024 20:42

Did they get time off school then?

Yes. My school was shut for weeks.

I'm a nurse. My colleagues have to be here at 7am regardless!

The children aren't going to work.
They are having their last week of school for the academic year, for majority anyway.

The teachers will be in as normal - schools are, in the main, open as normal with some allowing pupils to come in a little later than normal without getting a late mark.

There are some workplaces allowing staff to come in later with no penalty to.

Dh's work did exactly the same for the women's football too.

Wishitsnows · 14/07/2024 22:32

I can’t believe children go to bed so early that they can’t cope with staying up until 10!

That's about 2 hours past normal primary kids bedtime. If I went to bed at midnight I would really feel it the next day!

Longma · 14/07/2024 22:34

Piggiesinblankets

Iirr the lionesses game was in school holidays.
It wasn't on a Sunday night in term time.
So that's what school wasn't affected by a later start.

Boeing?

Idk if you saw a thread recently about things you hate on MN but someone posted that they read HTH as Hark The Herald.

This is the first time I've seen it in the wild and it's now stuck in my head 😂
