To hope that this "new" way of queuing at pubs just becomes the norm

A fair way of lining up instead of everyone jostling stressfully and the hottest or tallest or most pals with the bartender getting first dibs?

Eh?

Izzabellasasperella · 14/07/2024 18:58

I wish there was a better way to be served at a bar. When it's really busy I hate trying to find a space then trying to catch the bar persons eye whilst also trying not to get annoyed when someone who was after you is served first😀

DPotter · 14/07/2024 18:58

I'm getting the feeling I've joined mid conversation....

LuckyOnes · 14/07/2024 18:59

What 'new way of queueing'? I've been in pubs several times over the last couple of weeks, and everyone was doing it the trad way, of trying to catch the bar staff's eye, and relying on their patience/observational skills.

RationalityIsHard · 14/07/2024 18:59

For a nation that supposedly loves queuing, we do have a particularly shit system for bars and pubs.

LuluBlakey1 · 14/07/2024 18:59

What 'new' way?

Peoneve · 14/07/2024 19:00

Love jostling at the bar- part of the pub experience
Maybe your are more of a restaurant person?

Hermittrismegistus · 14/07/2024 19:00

Don't most have table service now? You just order and pay though an app.

Greenlittecat · 14/07/2024 19:01

What's the new way?

When I worked in a really busy pub we were allocated a section of bar and told to work from left to right so it was fair as when one person came out someone would take their place but would need to wait till I’d finished trhe circuit before I got back to them.

This is best of all ofc but I've only seen it on wetherspoons and green king

I've seen a lot of moaning about queuing at bars lately, people moaning that it's not the done thing, decent bar staff know who's next, blah blah. It's left over from covid.

As someone who serves on a bar, I like proper queuing. I'm sick of old men getting arsey because they think someone has pushed in and they are so desperate for a Worthys that they can't wait two minutes.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 14/07/2024 19:03

The desperate attempt to catch the bar person's eye. Their desperate attempt not to make eye contact. The lip reading dance when you do finally make eye contact, while almost breathing into the face of the person sitting at the bar, literally blocking the serving point. Yep, it's ridiculous.

I never understand why they don't just get rid of bar stools or have a bar stool area and a bar area for ordering.

Izzabellasasperella · 14/07/2024 19:04

Don't all Weatherspoons have the app though? It's the one thing I like about spoons(also the prices😀)

TheLastTrainForTheCoast · 14/07/2024 19:04

Best way to get served at a bar has always been to squeeze your tits together. Not PC but true. Also, surprisingly,I've found early 40s tits work just as well .

MissFancyDay · 14/07/2024 19:06

Maybe I like the misery!!

Cheepcheepcheep · 14/07/2024 19:07

Totally depends on the pub - my parents local, through dint of the floorplan/layout, does this. I find it a bit annoying but fine. Not normal ime elsewhere.

It’s sort of like the queuing convention on the Jubilee line thanks to the door set up that doesn’t happen on any other line. Woe betide those who push in!

palomatoast · 14/07/2024 19:14

Noooo! Hate this! And yes I've worked in a pub (for many years). If you don't want to stand at a bar then don't go to a pub. A proper pub means checking out what's on tap while waiting to get served and maybe having a laugh and a chat with the bartender or the person stood next to you. Also who wants a long windy queue of people running past their table? Let's not ruin pubs please.

CedarFence · 14/07/2024 19:16

Queuing is the norm at my local ‘Spoons. If not an actual line of people a clear observance as to who is next.

Lurleene · 14/07/2024 19:16

I was in a pub relatively recently and it was quite empty. I went up to order some food, a long bar with no staff in sight and just one woman waiting at one end of it. I went and stood about halfway down the bar - she went absolutely apeshit at me. Screaming at me for trying to jump the queue. Obviously some unwritten rule that I was unaware of. Of course if the server had come along I would have let her go first but after that little episode I didn't fancy hanging about.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/07/2024 19:20

The staff need to be on the ball of who is next if it's busy. But the whole rigmarole of desperately craning your neck, politely waving etc, while staff literally refuse to look in your direction is utterly soul destroying.
I go to pubs so infrequently now, that if there was a queue to the level where it was unclear who was and wasn't before me I'd just leave. Too anxiety inducing already paying knocking on a tenner for a drink, never mind being jostled and blanked in the process of obtaining it.

Wouldn't have worked on me or any of the other women I worked with behind the bar I'm afraid. Most good bartenders know who's next and will serve them first. Best way to get served is to tip or be a regular.
