To have grudging respect for how Trump styled it out

I mean someone tried to murder him, he came very close to having died. He went through a terrifying experience and came out saying fight and raising his fist in defiance. I think he’s an odious man but despite that, I have to concede a nod to that.

Let’s face it, if this had happened to Obama and he’d responded in the same way we’d all be like ‘woah, he the man!’

Note. This is not a genuine AIBU. I’m confident in my position on this but know so many people have so polarized themselves that they would rather eat their own eyeballs than find any small compliment or recognition for someone they hate.

Are you sure? Not like he left gracefully last time.

He can't supersede the two term limit, so yes quite sure.

cardibach · 14/07/2024 19:32

Ladyslip · 14/07/2024 19:30

Well we can disagree on that then.

My grudging respect is for his ability, despite a very nearly successful murder attempt, to hold his focus on his goals and turn the situation. to his advantage. It’s not about whether his goal is admirable, nor how he’s achieving it. My grudging respect is Just fir his ability to maintain that presence of mind under a terrifying and high stress situation.

So you’re saying it’s admirable to focus on self promotion even if it puts other people's lives at risk?
I can’t agree with you there.

So what happened to Corey? Did he spontaneously combust?

Applesonthelawn · 14/07/2024 19:32

He was definitely remarkably composed. What that says about him is open to debate.

Did the innocent bystander fake his death then?

You trust he won’t change the law?

You are Queen of the eyeball eaters.

Not only are you unable to give any credit in any situation to someone you hate, but you tell yourself it’s impossible for anyone else to do so.

Remarkable level of inadequacy of character.

Who said I hate him? I wouldn’t expend that much emotion on him.

I’d say inadequacy of character is having a hard on for Trump.

Since people have blinkered respect for people like Trump. It’s impossible to tell now.

The President doesn't have that ability.

Brabugheaid · 14/07/2024 19:35

He thought he would look weak cowering under a pile of body guards, being ushered away looking terrified. He would rather risk his life than look cowardly. His instinct was to protect his image - raising his fist makes him look strong (just look at that amazing picture). I don’t like Donald Trump, but his reaction was pitch perfect in terms of helping him achieve his aim ie winning the election. “Fight!” was an unfortunate choice of word, because it is so inflammatory, but he didn’t have a lot of time to think it through, to be fair, and I guess it was the best word he could think of in the circumstances to convey his intended message (ie “I am strong and brave. I will not let anyone beat me.”) Whatever your political opinions he was incredibly brave, that cannot be denied. I guess he must really, really want to win that election!

Why you have a grudging admiration for an alleged multiple rapist who talks about 'grabbing them by the pussy' is beyond me. I believe he reacted the way he did because he's a psychopath who doesn't feel emotions normally and saw his assassination attempt as an opportunity to build his brand. But you carry on fist pumping him. USA!

slappedinthefacewithatortilla · 14/07/2024 19:37

MrsSchrute · 14/07/2024 18:18

Was it not just a stress reaction? The fight of fight or flight fame?
Don't see what makes it admirable.

🙄

turquoisebays · 14/07/2024 19:38

It's actually funny watching people just absolutely seethe over this man.
The pure, unadulterated hatred for him is just tangible. This would be understandable if there weren't other leaders and former leaders of free countries who were guilty of far, far worse than Trump, but because Trump is first and foremost guilty of the unforgiveable crime of being a right-wing, politically incorrect businessman, he is enemy number 1 for the Left. I'm not saying he isn't guilty of more, but compared to some other leaders from the last decade, he's almost benign.
In my view, Jacinda Arden's policies were outright, objectively evil and dangerous. I am genuinely shocked she's not in prison for some of the things she implemented. But she's an educated, left-wing woman, so there's no way she could be worse than someone like TRUMP.

Imagine the response if he actually had looked terrified ("oh he acts tough, but look what a coward he is"). You can't really win in a situation like this.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 14/07/2024 19:39

Trump is not 'thick'. I think this was genuine but part of me wonders if he set it up. I think it can't have been as he wouldn't have condoned anyone getting killed or injured.

He needs to step down, but I respected Biden's speech about it. No one should stoop to killing.

SandPoppit · 14/07/2024 19:40

Bakersdozens · 14/07/2024 18:32

He was running on adrenaline, and did everything wrong, showed no self control or training at all. He was sticking his head out without knowing how many snipers there were, or where they were! His guards were desperately trying to reign him in, but he was out of control. No sense, no self control, no response to training

No, I don't admire him. If there had been two shooters, he would have been killed. He is an idiot. Most people know it

Edited

Agree with this. Surely the thing to do is keep low, allow the security guards to bundle you off under cover as trained. Standing tall and making gestures of defiance invites more shots, putting security and audience members at greater risk.

justasking111 · 14/07/2024 19:40

What I did notice was his security detail were shorter than Trump. Not sure why but it was noticeable on the footage. He's a big fella.

I remember Reagan being shot, he was bundled into a car unceremoniously, not great for a wounded individual.

There's no training I guess for such an incident that compares to reality. They'd all have been running on adrenaline.

pleasehelpwi3 · 14/07/2024 19:40

I despise Trump. But yesterday he was incredibly brave. And I think he won himself the election too.

No I didn’t say that. Read my post again to see what I said.

To be honest I’m in awe that he’s continuing to go and speak in Wisconsin tomorrow. Not something I can see many doing without significant delay/recovery time.

To get that image out of it was really something
