To have grudging respect for how Trump styled it out

I mean someone tried to murder him, he came very close to having died. He went through a terrifying experience and came out saying fight and raising his fist in defiance. I think he’s an odious man but despite that, I have to concede a nod to that.

Let’s face it, if this had happened to Obama and he’d responded in the same way we’d all be like ‘woah, he the man!’

Note. This is not a genuine AIBU. I’m confident in my position on this but know so many people have so polarized themselves that they would rather eat their own eyeballs than find any small compliment or recognition for someone they hate.

It might be said that Trump is a great one for showmanship and courts publicity in whatever way might bring him the most into the limelight.

Well obviously. None of that is particularly necessary or useful (and could be quite dangerous) for the job of potus.

If Trump wins in November, there might not be an election in 2028

Can any Americans answer whether this is remotely possible? When I studied politics A million years ago we learnt that the US constitution is so powerful that the POTUS has less power than the British PM. I know lots of things have happened that were previously thought could not happen and the Supreme Court is stuffed with his cronies, but even Mike Pence, after excusing him for so long didn't put Trump before the Constitition in the end.

Wishing people bad things is Trump's way.
And yes I am a better person than Trump. Frankly it's not difficult, the bar is pretty low

Well you are not coming across as a very good person. Also, speculating about stuff if he gets in. I get it you are a Democrat. Take it with them to get a viable candidate and problem solved.

HRTQueen · 15/07/2024 18:19

Trump is known to be excellent at instinctively reading the room and he even managed to when just being shot at

This will absolutely increase his appeal, I can's say I admire him but his resilience can't be ignored

the last 6-12 months i've believed i was going to abstain from voting in the upcoming election because the options are equally terrible

but watching Trump survive an assassination attempt and act like a total fucking savage just shifted me into some strange, patriotic gear that my fancy-feminism-white-men-bad infected brain never showed me

like, the dude took a bullet and stood up with blood dripping down his face, and rallied a fucking crowd while fist pumping, yelling "FIGHT!"

sorry, but i'm voting for that.

and saying it out loud feels so freeing

(2012 stepfanie would be so pissed but that's okay because 2012 stepfanie didn't know shit)”

Putin grapples with bears and rides a horse with his shirt off. She'd vote for him - not that she'd have much choice.

She does go into a lot more detail here about her political journey, and it’s a lot more than admiring ageing raw machismo!:

If trump had died I dread to think of the rioting that would have ensued

The matyring. One of two reasons I have always against his assassination

I can't open Twitter! Such a shame as I'd love to read it.

wateringcanface · 15/07/2024 20:15

Styling it out to me would be immediately checking the welfare of those who potentially died while coming out to support him, rather than posing for a photo shouting fight while people drape themselves over you as human sheilds

BeachParty · 15/07/2024 20:19

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 14/07/2024 18:33

He shouted "fight" last time he uttered such words, the capitol was stormed by his mindless zombie fans.

Obama would have styled it out with grace and decorum. Not attempting to incite further violence by telling his fans to "fight".

Edited

Exactly this.
Shouting "fight" just incites people.
The Capitol got stormed last time he was like that.
He's a danger.

@Ladyslip I honestly thought a man whose lived such a life of luxury and privilege would have become a cowering wreck when faced with such a terrifying momemt. But he didn’t. He absolutely kept in (his) character and played it. I’ve seen successful and confident people completely lose their composure and be lost and bewildered in much less stressful but unexpected events. He didn’t do that. Credit where it’s due.

His reaction was instinctive. It's not a sign of bravery. No credit is due.

People react unpredictably in a crisis/shock situation. Some people freeze, some react. It's not possible to control how you react except perhaps with intense training / routine experience of extreme situations e.g. a fireman. Read 'Deep Survival' by Laurence Gonzales, who describes the phenomenon.

It's why airlines repeat emergency procedure again and again. In an attempt for it to sink in sufficiently to spark a reaction - and not freezing - in an emergency situation.

Trump didn't freeze, but the air-punch was a sort of knee-jerk reaction, because that's all he knows - he's forever punching the air. He'll do it when he's in a wheelchair with dementia.

I also think that he actually looked pathetic and lost, in spite of the air-punch.

Plus, I now read that he repeatedly said, "Let me get my shoes, let me get my shoes". This is a freeze-shock reaction as I described.

It's not about being Democrat or Republican.
It's about basic human decency.
It's about not supporting someone who has kicked Women's Rights back a century.
It's about not supporting someone who has taken the stance that the only valid election is one that he wins.

You’re not wrong OP. The rabid mouth frothers are out in force. Curling and melting like salted slugs because a politician they don’t like showed more defiance after being shot than they do behind a computer screen. Most sane people can admit that without even being Trump supporters.

These people have truly lost the plot.

Whom do you think would’ve staged it? I mean, there’s no way the shooter would get out of that situation alive so someone would have had to persuade a 20-year-old to throw away their life. Perhaps the shooter will turn out to be a member of a terrorist organization?

I think it’s more likely that he was mentally unwell.

See…this bit would beth3 bit that made me NOT vote for him even if I’d been go8ng to. How can you say he’s a ‘fucking savage’ but want him in a post requiring nuance, statesmanship and diplomacy?

Who would phrase it 'woah, he the man' out of interest?! Can't think of many posters on Mumsnet saying that.

He's a psycho so no, no grudging respect for me for his getting shot in the ear.

There's a lot of radicalised MAGAs and the guy was a registered republican. I have no idea what happened, but any things possible in Americas political scene these days isn't it?
