To have grudging respect for how Trump styled it out

I mean someone tried to murder him, he came very close to having died. He went through a terrifying experience and came out saying fight and raising his fist in defiance. I think he’s an odious man but despite that, I have to concede a nod to that.

Let’s face it, if this had happened to Obama and he’d responded in the same way we’d all be like ‘woah, he the man!’

Note. This is not a genuine AIBU. I’m confident in my position on this but know so many people have so polarized themselves that they would rather eat their own eyeballs than find any small compliment or recognition for someone they hate.

I frankly couldn't give a fig about Trump's trauma.
I have a certain amount of sympathy for the misguided person who was suckered into being in his crowd, and died for it. But Trump? Nah. He is a vile person and is reaping what he sowed. He showed NO sympathy for Nancy Pelosi's husband suffering much worse trauma than an ear boo-boo

Nancy's husband was worked over by his mentally/drug challenged rent boy. A strange comparison.

BruFord · 15/07/2024 15:18

@justasking111 I have a feeling that untreated MH issues will be at the root of this shooting, which is very sad.

I always raise this issue when discussing gun control with my more sceptical relatives. Anyone can have a MH crisis at any time in their lives, and if they’ve got access to a weapon, it can result in something like this, or far worse.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 15/07/2024 15:23

I think the escalation of political violence in the US is the biggest threat to democracy.

The attempted assassinations of Trump, Steve Scalise and Brett Kavanaugh.

The antifa riots and deaths during summer 2020, cyncially taking advantage of the peaceful BLM protests. Then Jan 6, cynically taking advantage of pro trump demos..

I'm glad that both Biden and Trump in the past 24 hours have notably changed their rhetoric and urged unity. Hopefully this will be the turning point.

To give the devil his due I'm inclined to agree with the OP.

Amusing to see posters strainng to dismiss his sturdy reaction to nearly getting his brains blown out. Especially as so many Mumsnetters go into full panic mode merely because someone's knocked at the door or a workman wants to use their lavatory.

Yeah, it was pretty badass. Laughing at these people who are twisting themselves into pretzels in their mental gymnastics to dismiss the idea that Trump might have one single solitary moment of admirability.

(It’s okay, you guys. You don’t have to keep pretending that Trump is less complex than a villain from a children’s cartoon show. You’re allowed to despise the guy and still think he did one awesome thing. Even Ted Bundy saved a little kid from drowning once.)

It's not a strange comparison at all. Paul Pelosi was attacked with a hammer resulting in a fractured skull - I'm pretty sure he thought he was going to die just as much as Trump did.
And Trump mocked him for it.

Agreed. We had someone jump off our local bridge onto the dual carriageway this weekend. The other one who threatened to jump was talked down a few hours earlier.

We get train jumpers too
The bridge jumpers tend to walk out of our hospital onto the bridge a short walk away.

We've lost friends to the sea because we're coastal. Two jumped off a cliff into the sea,, one went out in his boat and jumped in. Another parked his car and entered the water his body found weeks later.

All the deaths were more traumatic for the family because there was hope for days and weeks . Every day their pictures were shared far and wide.

VolvoFan · 15/07/2024 15:31

The opposition have wanted to get rid of him for a long time. They always say "we don't mean kill". They went after him for his tax returns, they tried to make out that he's a rapist for a throwaway statement he made in the 1990s, they tried to get him on charges relating to Stormy Daniels, they convicted him, and then some scrawny little 20 year old with a history of political violence tried to murder him.

He needs new security detail, though. The response was pathetic, even after members of the public spotted the shooter and tried to get the police to react. Nothing sticks to him, which is why he's so deeply hated.

Anyone commiserating (there are many on Twitter) over the fact that Trump turned his head enough to avoid a kill shot is just a total psychopath.

I genuinely don't agree. I think he's not capable of that sort of depth of thought. All he wanted was attention from his adoring public. A normal person wouldn't have been dicking about waving/ fist pumping having just been shot. They'd get the fuck into the car out of further danger. I think he has some sort of mental issue/ condition.

If trump had died I dread to think of the rioting that would have ensued

I don't think there would have been any. Him dying makes him a martyr. Regardless, he's going to be the 47th POTUS in January 2025, the election is merely a formality now.

I was thinking about that. It could have been catastrophic.

And now the case about his trove of highly-classified documents he was accused of stashing in Mar-a-lago has been tossed out by a judge.

Well, I suppose if Biden can keep documents in his garage for years, Trump can do the same.

Ffs, what a pair they are, can we please have some better candidates in 2028?! 😂

If Trump wins in November, there might not be an election in 2028

It's going to be very interesting few years I think 🤔

It's possible to disagree with his views but also consider his response brave.

It was much more stupid than brave. He needed to get the fuck into that car as fast as possible and forget about his ego for a few minutes. But he's not even capable of that.

Poppysmom22 · 15/07/2024 16:46

He’s a flipping barm pot and his political views are just madness however he just nearly got shot in the head so I will give him a nod for keeping his head ( no pun intended)!

Poppysmom22 · 15/07/2024 16:47

I do think that might have swung the section for him though which is not quite the outcome the shooter was hoping for I am sure.

Yes but Biden's case wasn't thrown out as such. They couldn't take it forward because he was deemed not compos mentis enough to be a credible witness.

Oh Trump’s trauma. Forget it. He is resilient and a fighter. Wishing people bad things says more about the person really. Are you really much better than Trump?

@BruceAndNosh Nah, I don’t think that Trump intends to seize power and become a dictator. He wants a second term to prove that he can do it and then he’ll bow out.

He’d have started his political career decades ago if that was his goal.

Wishing people bad things is Trump's way.
And yes I am a better person than Trump. Frankly it's not difficult, the bar is pretty low

It might be said that Trump is a great one for showmanship and courts publicity in whatever way might bring him the most into the limelight.
