To have grudging respect for how Trump styled it out

I mean someone tried to murder him, he came very close to having died. He went through a terrifying experience and came out saying fight and raising his fist in defiance. I think he’s an odious man but despite that, I have to concede a nod to that.

Let’s face it, if this had happened to Obama and he’d responded in the same way we’d all be like ‘woah, he the man!’

Note. This is not a genuine AIBU. I’m confident in my position on this but know so many people have so polarized themselves that they would rather eat their own eyeballs than find any small compliment or recognition for someone they hate.

Of course Trump is an odious man, but I find it really hypocritical to slag him off when we Brits have our own bunch of complete dickheads running the country, plus ones that have come and gone.

If Trump gets in, loads of Americans will have voted for him, and see themselves as being better off. Why do you know better?

I’ve just spent a month in America. From what I saw, there are less idiots there, than here.

The true measure of his courage will be if he goes back to doing these kind of rallies or not.

It would appear that cheapskate protection by DHS (who are still denying protection to RFK Jr) allowed the course of events.
More professional security (the counter-sniper was from the local police department rather than FBI/SS, there was no lockdown of the buildings that overlooked the site, flags were flying close to the dais to enable a sniper to correct for wind speed ...) will make future events safer.
However single-minded/pig-headed he is, I would not be surprised if the full impact of events take two or three weeks to take effect.

Why are the MAGA lot on here?

Yawn. Yes we are all MAGA. We are just saying ‘ I think Trump is odious but..’ to try to put you off the scent. Damn! It’s not worked!

It's a bit like on the Royal family threads, there are always people suggesting they've stumbled on there by accident and they don't care at all, but also by the way here is a 10000 word essay on why Harry and Meghan should be King and Queen of the universe. Same vibes here.

It did look pretty staged to be honest. And Trump looked almost like he was expecting it. He is not 'brave,' and he didn't 'style anything out.' 🙄 He got lucky (that's if it WAS real!) If it was staged it would be a bit wild though, as someone got killed!

Anyone who supports this man needs to take a really long hard look in the mirror. I see his supporters on TV, and feel terrified that these people exist. I also feel grateful that I have no-one like that in my life! (AND I feel grateful that I don't live in America.)

I do wonder if the Trump-worship is some kind of Stockholm Syndrome. I just literally don't know of one single normal person in real life who supports Trump. Clearly many do in America, but I don't know anyone outside of America who would even think of supporting him! That is why I feel there is some kind of Stockholm Syndrome at play here. Or even a kind of Religious Scrupulosity.

The man is hideous! 😖 In SO MANY WAYS!

He has literally millions of supporters in America. Maybe as you don’t live in America, you don’t see what the country has been reduced to. The cities are dire - resembling something from a third world country. People are desperate. So I think unless you live amongst them, you shouldn’t judge the voters there. And of course you know no-one in real life who supports him - why would you if you don’t live there? Most people in other countries don’t really have an opinion about another country’s politics, especially in the UK where we have been battling with our own election over the last few months.

Boris and his ilk were dicks but they weren't wannabe dictators. They wanted to rule the establishment not get rid of it. Trump is an entirely different class.

Look, I was explicitly clear in my later post about exactly what I respected. It’s a narrow and precise definition that does not cover what you accused me off. I am sorry, but don’t lay your comprehension difficulties at my door.

My grudging respect is for his ability, despite a very nearly successful murder attempt, to hold his focus on his goals and turn the situation
These are your words. That’s self promotion. That’s what I said you admired. You seem to not understand your own words, never mind anyone else’s.

summeroccupation · 14/07/2024 18:27

There's absolutely nothing about him to admire. He is an odious man who is stirring up a civil war.

Actually it was Obama who caused so much divide in my country.

That's made me laugh because it's so true!🤣

Oh dear me.

TickTickTockItsaQuartertoTwo · 14/07/2024 20:08

I do not like him or anything he stands for, but the way he reacted and that photo against the flag will be the campaign photo to end all photos. He’ll win now. The Bible Belt are going crazy, he was saved/touched by god etc

Getonwitit · 14/07/2024 20:09

DanielGault · 14/07/2024 18:22

He was too thick to process what was happening. As usual. How anyone can have an iota of admiration for him I do not know.

Oh dear, that comment says so much about the author.

Dymaxion · 14/07/2024 20:10

@Infor I asked on another thread about Hawkeye as the security were asking about them on the podium after Trump went down, was the security for Trump private and the Hawkeye contingent were on the periphery ? Who were the people who turned up in full combat gear ? local's or national or SS ?

ThePoetsWife · 14/07/2024 20:10

Felt sorry for the security staff - trump was putting their lives at risk by resisting their efforts to keep him safe

Sleepybear1234 · 14/07/2024 20:11

Completely agree @Ladyslip post is spot on x

JudyJudeplusOne · 14/07/2024 20:11

@Munter A better leader of the free world you could not find.

Really? Are you in the US?

Livelovebehappy · 14/07/2024 20:11

People on here saying Trump has staged it are crazy. You honestly think Trump would have hired a 20 year old, to go on a building a few hundred yards away, to aim a gun at him but just make sure it grazes his ear? An inch to the right would have blown his brains out. And the people on here saying this are ridiculing his supporters as thick? The irony….

bonzaitree · 14/07/2024 20:12

Loads of people will vote for him now because of what he did.

@Momtotwokids how did he do that ? that's a genuine question by the way, I am interested to why you think that.

Whilst I am glad he wasn't killed...

He was hit by flying glass, not a bullet (I am sure he is and will always claim he was hit by a bullet, but the wound which is shown pretty close up in the photos he managed to pose for quite remarkably, does not show the burns a bullet graze like that would produce, and look absolutely like what flying glass shards would do...)...

And manages to stand up and punch the air, before it is clear that the active shooter situation is over.

Brave? Or stupid?

I dunno.

MrsClatterbuck · 14/07/2024 20:17

Bakersdozens · 14/07/2024 18:32

He was running on adrenaline, and did everything wrong, showed no self control or training at all. He was sticking his head out without knowing how many snipers there were, or where they were! His guards were desperately trying to reign him in, but he was out of control. No sense, no self control, no response to training

No, I don't admire him. If there had been two shooters, he would have been killed. He is an idiot. Most people know it

Edited

This. He wasn't for doing what was expected of him in this situation making the ss agents job harder. As you say if there had been a second shooter he would have been toast.

Yes but even more will now because of how he acted.
