Am I good enough to be a model or would I get laughed at if I approached an agency?

I’ve always wanted to model but always felt not good enough. I’m now in my early 30s so not sure if I’d be too old for it. I’m a curvy slim build so not sure if I’d be smooth or skinny enough for them. I’m decently pretty but I would need Botox done to smooth out my wrinkles to make myself look even younger (I do look young for my age)

I know that’s vain but modelling can be a very vain and hard industry to get into but I would love to give it a go. Have any of yous done it?

You’re probably about twenty years too late.

Tunder · 14/07/2024 16:14

I think we need to see what you look like to be able to advise

EllenLRipley · 14/07/2024 16:14

Modelling is a very broad field. It has to do with a LOT more than having a good figure and a nice face. Models can be any size shape tbh but must be very photogenic and be able to work well with photographers. You are obviously too old to do high fashion unless they wanted 'character models' but models of all ages work, you need to do a LOT more research. It is mostly very badly paid.

I’ve always fancied myself as a astrophysicist. Do you think NASA will let me go on their next space mission?

I mean I guess they will if random strangers on the internet tell me I can do it.

LapinR0se · 14/07/2024 16:15

Some agencies will take anyone as long as you pay them a fee.
The more reputable agencies normally have certain criteria e.g. minimum height 5’8.
you could always start your own insta page with outfits etc. If it’s successful brands will pay you to model their clothes and you get commission too. A friend of mine does it and makes a really good living.

S0livagant · 14/07/2024 16:17

Depends on the type of modeling. Plenty of women in their thirties through to older women modelling for brands like Seasalt for example.

MoonlightFarrow · 14/07/2024 16:18

Odd thing to ask on a forum where most people won’t have a clue about the modelling industry. But nothing ventured, nothing gained, as long as you’re prepared not to take it badly if it’s all a total disappointment.

MonsteraMama · 14/07/2024 16:20

This depends entirely on the kind of modelling you want to do.

Runway modelling? No. You're too old and probably not skinny enough. The world has moved on a lot but the runway is still 99% size zero waifs and most of them start at 14/15/16

Hair, beauty, skincare, advertising stuff etc? Sure, but I'd avoid Botoxing yourself into oblivion, more and more in this side of the industry they're looking for more natural (ie human) looking people. Increasingly seeing pores, wrinkles, stretch marks etc. HOWEVER this would be the hardest area to get into because it's so, so flooded.

Glamour stuff? You could find a niche.

Realistically the market is absolutely flooded with the increase in popularity of insta models and influencers online and no longer really needing an agent to get anywhere. You'd have to be pretty bull headed to get anywhere or make a career out of it, especially starting late (relatively of course). It takes more than a pretty face and good body these days.

FuzzyStripes · 14/07/2024 16:21

What kind of modelling do you want to do?

StormingNorman · 14/07/2024 16:21

I’ve casted models for my job and they aren’t necessarily pretty or have a good figure.

They tend to be very long and narrow. If you are regular sized with a good figure you’re probably a plus size model. Faces IRL don’t always look as good as they photograph. Some models you’d pass on the street without thinking they are pretty.

But as none of us know your height or what you look like, you’re best to go to an agency.

Scarletttulips · 14/07/2024 16:22

No harm in trying is there?

Seems to be a look of ‘normal’ for most modals these days, you no longer need to be dead skinny and 6ft tall.

Give it a try! It’s luck more than anything.

Meadowwild · 14/07/2024 16:22

If you want to do it to feel pretty - meh. That world will be full of taller, thinner, better boned, younger people than you with immaculate skin, teeth, hair, eyes, lips. People so gorgeous you can't believe they are human. And it will make you feel.

If you want to do it because you think it might be fun, sign up for some agencies that accept ordinary people for fashion campaigns that show a range of ages, heights, body types . You still have to be more gorgeous than average, but not 6 foot, six stone and sixteen.

You could also look into being an extra for films, soaps and TV.

FoundObject · 14/07/2024 16:23

How on earth would we know? Look up some agencies that do catalogue or equivalent rather than catwalk/editorial/high fashion, and do whatever it is they suggest you do as an approach.

I agree

MotherofGorgons · 14/07/2024 16:30

Oh no its you again. Poster has posted repeatedly about lipo, filler, Botox and clearly has extreme issues. Also extremely odd views on rearing babies.

Testina · 14/07/2024 16:30

Bloody hell. Botox? There are plenty of models in their 30s (and older) chosen because they look those ages. Can you imagine the photo shoot? “Can you look xyz?”
“Sorry no, my face is frozen like this.”

Shiningout · 14/07/2024 16:33

How on earth can people advise without seeing you? And what kind of modelling?

TheSerenePinkOrca · 14/07/2024 16:38

You'll only know if you're any good if an agency will take you on WITHOUT any upfront payment e.g. photo shoot costs for your portfolio are only payable once you start earning money.

Any agency that asks for money up front are not worth it and won't get you any work.

Don't waste money on botox. You're never going to be able to compete with teenagers, and agencies will want someone who looks their age for older person modelling.

TulipCat · 14/07/2024 16:44

You could do catalogue modelling or for brands that market to a slightly older demographic.

Peoneve · 14/07/2024 16:49

Only fans seems popular?

Coconutter24 · 14/07/2024 16:49

No one can tell you yes or no based on the information given. You could be far more beautiful than your letting on or you could be far more ugly but not realise lol.

Well no one is going to want a model with crap injected or a frozen face.

Oh, is this the poster who was primarily concerned about how she was going to maintain her beauty regime with a newborn, and who was going to get liposuction so as not to 'become one of those frumpy middle-aged women'?

And now you want Botox and a modelling contract. Right.

TheSquareMile · 14/07/2024 16:54

@PlatinumBlondeBarbie

How tall are you and what size do you wear?
