To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

Not ideal, but once in that situation not sure what people are meant to do. On balance I'd rather they broke a rule about dogs in the toilets, than risk a dog getting loose on a campsite whilst unattended in a tent, or being left to over-heat in a car.

Would you feel the same way if you were the parent dealing with a phobic child, though? Probably not.

Ultimately, dog owners can't just do whatever they like and sod the consequences. If they have a dog who can't be left, then they shouldn't be camping alone with said dog.

Would the parent of the phobic child rather pass a barking dog tied to a fence near the toilets, or come across a loose panicked dog thats escaped a tent? Or a dog in a toilet cubicle with its owner, on a short lead and under control?

You really can't cater for every single eventuality, and at least if the dog is with its owner, you can say 'my child is phobic please give us space'.

Sometimes you have to make the decision that is safest for those you're responsible for, and it might not be the perfect choice for everyone in existance.

Or maybe people shouldn't take their dogs away on holiday if they don't have the means to care for them appropriately?

I have a dog, I love dogs - but I'm not so entitled as to think that I have the right to take my dog wherever I like, regardless of any rules or restrictions in place. Dogs aren't people - they will always come second (and rightfully so).

If you can't holiday alone with your dog without taking them everywhere, then it's your responsibility to check in advance that your accommodation and plans etc. are suitable for your needs.

Male dog enjoying his trip to the ladies loo…

Obviously if the sign says 'No Dogs' then I wouldn't expect dogs to be in there. It's not exactly a pleasant environment as it is, let alone adding random dogs in the mix. I can't imagine many dogs would find it relaxing either.

I wouldn't take my dog into a loo unless unavoidable.
I'd happily tie it up outside (couldn't leave it in the tent as it would try and scratch its way out to me).

The problem with this is my dog is very cute looking and quite small/non-threatening looking, kids are drawn to them like moths to a flame - I don't like leaving my dog unsupervised if there are unsupervised children about just in case something happens.
So in that scenario I'm a bit stuffed and would possibly opt for a wild wee away from the crowds (I'm sure lots would find that even more gross!)

Why do you think the rules don't apply to you?

I don’t. But in this instance it’s a stupid ‘rule’ that you can’t take a dog into a camp site toilet with you on a clearly dog friendly camp site!

Why is it stupid?

Dog friendly isn't the same as "dogs can go everywhere".

Wow that's awful. Do you honestly feel that way about single people with dogs? I see some horrible things on here but this has to be one of the worst I've seen.

Beware of dog owners that are so entitled that they can’t see beyond their own needs.

They’re not potentially inclined to being cruel though and there’s your difference.

BlueGrackle · 13/07/2024 12:07

Lock them in car, or leave them with whoever you are camping with. It’s not fair to inflict a dog on other people who maybe frightened, or have allergies.
I have dogs, why can other dog owners not grasp this ?

You lock yours in THE CAR?!!! No you don’t! Surely.

So you only follow rules when you agree with them?

This is a new one 😄 dogs in toilets.

The amount of people on this thread who don't seem to understand how much f a problem dog theft is.

Best case scenario it's just stolen to be bred from. Worst case it is ripped to pieces in a dog fight for thugs entertainment and dies in agony, surrounded by a bunch of scumbags who are enjoying watching it bleed to death.

TBH this thread is a prime reminder to me of why I prefer dogs to people. Dogs aren't twats.

I totally understand it's a problem.

But it doesn't mean you can just take your dog wherever you like and sod everyone else.

In fairness, this is a campsite loo. Camping is generally the sort of place one might take a dog.

It’s not a hospital operating theatre or a fine dining establishment.

I don’t know why the campsite doesn’t have a separate dog owners loo.

Do you live some sort of perfect life where nothing EVER goes awry, everything trundles along according to the plan?

I'd love to know how.

A friend of mine ended up camping recently with no crates - someone rear ended her car in the carpark, trashing the dogs travel crates she'd planned to put in the tent. Her DP went off to get the car fixed, which in the end meant driving home, getting the van and coming back the following day whilst she camped alone.

What was she supposed to do? Soil herself?

I really don't think most people taking a dog into the loo with them on a campsite or at a services etc are doing so because they think they're 'entitled' to do as they please.

They're doing it because there is no other safe option - safe for their dogs (who they do have a legal and moral responsibility to) and safe for everyone else.

It's a toilet, the alternative is to piss yourself. They're not asking to take their dog to a spa or into a surgery room.

In the circumstances described by the op and the absence of no one to watch the dog for the whole 5/ 10 mins it takes me to go to the toilet, yes I would lock them in my car.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/07/2024 13:58

I'm really not going to be able to train this dog to bite a would be abductor Confused

And unfortunately some cunt would steal her to be ripped apart

ricecrispiecakes · 13/07/2024 13:58

@WiddlinDiddlin no, not at all - but I very much doubt that someone taking their dog with them while they shower on holiday is having any kind of crisis or emergency - do you, really?

And yes, I've been stuck needing a wee with my dog several times - and that's often meant I've had to do a wild wee at the side of the road or behind a tree.

I agree that hygiene wise it's not an issue, but it's the principle that there are a lot of dog owners out there who seem to think the rules don't apply to them or their dogs for some reason.

Very rarely there may be an emergency that means you have absolutely no choice, but let's be honest, the vast majority will be doing it because it's convenient or easier than any of the alternatives.

Dog ownership doesn’t mean someone is treating the animal with kindness either.

People that baby dogs and in turn create separation anxiety, are shit owners too.

LilBowWow · 13/07/2024 14:01

We’ve got to imagine every other person is either phobic or allergic but you won’t consider the person with the dog might be doing their very best with the options available to them.

I have children. I have friends. I have family. I have hobbies. I have two dogs. Neither are substitutes for anything. I love animals. All animals. They bring a lot to our lives. Don't judge me, making incorrect assumptions. Thank you.

LilBowWow · 13/07/2024 14:04

Impossible! No one has friends, family and dogs!
