Football free Sunday

Just curious...if anyone isn't watching England play on Sunday are you planning to do something else instead?

I couldn't give a flying flipadoodle about it so thinking film and a take away. DH will be out at the pub watching it so have the remote and Deliveroo app to myself.

Nah, I'll be taking full advantage of the fact that the local swimming pool and spa should be free from football supporters and have a lovely, quiet evening planned. Can't be doing with watching a group of over paid men dribble a ball around a piece of grass and cry more tears than a toddler when they get a boo boo.

Droolylabradors · 13/07/2024 10:47

DH likes watching TV, I generally get super bored. So I think I'll be in bed by 8pm with a good book like I am most nights.

Though I'm not bothered about football generally, I do think it will be a good boost for people to have a Labour govt and a winning men's football team in the same month.

A bit like TB winning in 97 and Katrina and the waves winning Eurovision.

SocksAndTheCity · 13/07/2024 10:51

I like watching football and I thoroughly enjoyed the Spain v France game as well as a few of the others, but the odd bits of England games I've caught have been dull and not worth putting myself out for.

I'll enjoy the cinema and then the peaceful journey home afterwards Smile

sashh · 13/07/2024 08:18

I'll probably do the same OP.

Although my local carvery doesn't have TV so will be empty.

I don't care about football but this is england so I'll watch it...

Why? I don't understand.

Not caring isn't the same as not enjoying. I've got no interest in tennis but if there was a Brit involved I would watch the final and probably enjoy it.

AuntieMarys · 13/07/2024 08:14

We will be watching House of the Dragon and be in bed by 9 😀

Ooh I thought hotd wasn't available until early hours of Monday morning! I'll join you then and watch that 👍

TwistedSisters · 13/07/2024 11:08

BogRollBOGOF · 13/07/2024 08:00

I'm aware that there's a big match.
Don't know what time.
My policy of not watching has served England well so far so do I attempt to witness history, watch it and jinx it, or quietly ignore to improve their odds Grin

I have a history of triggering devestating penalty shootouts when I show too much interest.

This made me 🤣.

Please do the nation a collective favour and ignore ignore!

Ghost2 · 13/07/2024 11:11

I'll be at work but hopefully they'll let us watch it, if not I'll figure out a way of watching it either on the work phone or I'll see if I can get it on the computer. Expecting half our staff to call in sick so it should be an interesting night.

WTAFisthisnonsense · 13/07/2024 11:16

I’ll be on a ✈️, so no problem avoiding it. 😁

Most of mumsnet I imagine going g by the number of I hate football threads there are .

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 13/07/2024 11:36

Imagine being one of the poor sods working for deliveroo etc. that evening
I hope they're getting quadruple pay!

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 13/07/2024 08:57

Why is it miserable?

I don't like football, so why would I watch? I don't begrudge anyone else their enjoyment though.

I'll watch the Wimbledon final because I do like tennis, then a film in the evening as DH is out watching the football.

Ah it was just said in jest! Can't believe that was taken seriously! Apologies @MayonnaiseOnMyChips , my dad says that all the time to raise a smile.

RedVanYellowVan · 13/07/2024 08:24

This is weird. It's a football match, nothing more, nothing less.

Surely you either watch it if you are interested or carry on as normal if you're not? There almost seems to be a sense of having to arrange something alternative on purpose going on here.

FWIW, we are meeting friends to do something outdoors and potentially very messy for most of the day. The evening will be cleaning ourselves, cleaning kit and eating. I'm not interested in football but might think to look at my phone at some point.

I know it's insane it's like me saying AIBU to not watch the queens funeral ? Do it don't do it really nobody gives a toss

Afternoonteavirgin · 13/07/2024 08:43

I have trauma related to football, although england playing isn't a huge trigger for me, I'd still like to avoid it, much as I appreciate the revenue it can bring for the country and realising england playing is a big deal. Also as an ex police despatcher I'm all too aware of what it does to the country in terms of crime, violence, child abuse and animal abuse. One to avoid for me.

I am endeavouring to take myself on a long run and maybe call in at one of the few pubs not showing it (a gay bar is a safe bet) to have a couple of glasses of wine later. With a book. Smile.

Yes because no gays ever watch football they only come out for Eurovision 🙄

I'm off up to the beach car park to watch the sunset with my flask of coffee, Kindle with wifi disabled and a big bag of sweets, I will await the call to say when it's safe to look! I will have Highlights set to record, whether I bother to watch it or not will depend on the outcome .

FrancisSeaton · 13/07/2024 11:49

AIBU to have a cricket free Saturday?
AIBU to have a sun free July?
AIBU to have a joy free Christmas?

Oh, you sound exactly like me, it's the reason I am banned from looking before I get 'the call' from my family! It applies to most sporting events, I recall Henman being 2 sets up and a break in the third, he lost. In '66 the manageress of the shop I worked at got so fed up with me that at 4.35, 5 minutes before the end in those days, she sent me to the TV shop next door, as I walked in Germany equalised! By the way, may I apologise to Scotland fans, they were drawing when I looked!

You might as well go onto a post asking ‘what are you growing in your garden this year?’ and accuse the OP of only posting because they want everyone to know they have a garden. It’s just a bizarre thing to do.

If you don’t want a football free Sunday that’s your choice, just as it’s other people’s choice to have one.

Given that most Sundays of the year, there's not football on, at 8pm, on only one channel, I don't understand the need to post about having a "football free Sunday". Bizarre.

Nourishinghandcream · 13/07/2024 12:03

Having checked I see it is in the evening so we will probably be having supper then taking Ddogs for their evening walk.
Just like me, OH has zero interest in football (or sport in general).
We anticipate a nice quiet wander across the fields with young Ddog going loopy chasing her ball.

MayonnaiseOnMyChips · 13/07/2024 12:26

This was more of a light hearted nosiness post as to see what we are all watching, eating, reading, doing instead of watching the football which seems to be dominating everything at the moment.
Some people have taken it a bit too seriously. 🙃

Because it’s everywhere and hard to avoid.

My friend just asked what we’re doing for the football, I told her I’m going to the cinema, she responded like I’m some sort of weirdo - and that’s not an uncommon response.

Surely it’s not hard to understand why if you don’t like it, in those circumstances it’s nice to chat with other people who feel the same way?

ChedderGorgeous · 13/07/2024 12:34

I hate bake off and that smug heavy gorilla Hollywood, so whenever this is on I take myself away and watch replays of Premier league football. Can't beat it.

Deliveroo is going to be slammed.

Why do people need takeaways just cause football is on?

PassingStranger · 13/07/2024 12:42

I think it's more likely that they want takeaways rather than 'need' them; I can't think of a situation where anybody would 'need' a takeaway.

Maybe because they're likely to be in front of the TV and not wanting to cook? They could have friends or family coming round and want to relax without a load of food preparation and clearing up to do - if I was watching it then I'd be happy to throw some money at Deliveroo to save myself some faff.

Princesssuperstar · 13/07/2024 13:08

I've been working all week (inc today) so gonna have a nice bubble bath then I'll pour myself a glass of wine and catch up on the soaps (proper hard-core haha)
