Football free Sunday

Just curious...if anyone isn't watching England play on Sunday are you planning to do something else instead?

I couldn't give a flying flipadoodle about it so thinking film and a take away. DH will be out at the pub watching it so have the remote and Deliveroo app to myself.

OP posts:
DappledThings · 13/07/2024 08:24

I'll be doing the ironing in front of the TV but listening to a podcast on headphones

CreepyDibillo · 13/07/2024 08:30

Get your Deliveroo order in early @MayonnaiseOnMyChips ! All the delivery apps will be super busy on Sunday, I'd imagine from about 6pm.

sashh · 13/07/2024 08:18

I'll probably do the same OP.

Although my local carvery doesn't have TV so will be empty.

I don't care about football but this is england so I'll watch it...

Why? I don't understand.

Because it would be great if we won? I never watch any kind of sport but I'd still like England to win.

Afternoonteavirgin · 13/07/2024 08:43

I have trauma related to football, although england playing isn't a huge trigger for me, I'd still like to avoid it, much as I appreciate the revenue it can bring for the country and realising england playing is a big deal. Also as an ex police despatcher I'm all too aware of what it does to the country in terms of crime, violence, child abuse and animal abuse. One to avoid for me.

I am endeavouring to take myself on a long run and maybe call in at one of the few pubs not showing it (a gay bar is a safe bet) to have a couple of glasses of wine later. With a book. Smile.

JackGrealishsCalves · 13/07/2024 08:46

Surely if you are at home you just do whatever you want? No need for making a big deal of it, its not like the players are playing in your garden and you have to make alternative plans 🙄

FunIsland · 13/07/2024 08:47

@Afternoonteavirgin I’m nothing to do with the police but this is a big part of it for me Also as an ex police despatcher I'm all too aware of what it does to the country in terms of crime, violence, child abuse and animal abuse. One to avoid for me.

Husband is watching it and people will be talking about it all over social media. I actively avoid it in the same way that I’d actively avoid an evening with Nigel Farage.

Funkyslippers · 13/07/2024 08:50

I'll be doing what I usually do as it doesn't start till 8pm. Then I'll probably just have it on in the background

Strange comment about the gay bar

Why is it miserable?

I don't like football, so why would I watch? I don't begrudge anyone else their enjoyment though.

I'll watch the Wimbledon final because I do like tennis, then a film in the evening as DH is out watching the football.

Tortiemiaw · 13/07/2024 09:00

I wish it was on in the afternoon so I could go for a completely person free walk !!
Apparently I'm a miserable sod but I really can't be doing with it!!Grin

SocksAndTheCity · 13/07/2024 09:05

I'm going to the cinema 6.30ish, then home for dinner and get everything ready for Monday morning as usual.

It didn't even register when I booked the cinema ticket, although I expect the tube home will be nice and peaceful Smile

What is strange about it?
If I weren't clear, the gay bars near me don't tend to show football.. so if I go into one with a book by myself, I'm likely to find more peace, than if I went to my local pub.
I am gay myself, if that helps.

Ridingthegravytrain · 13/07/2024 09:09

We don't have live tv so won't be watching. But I'm sure I'll get an idea of the score from my neighbour roaring through the wall!!

Fairyliz · 13/07/2024 09:12

RedVanYellowVan · 13/07/2024 08:24

This is weird. It's a football match, nothing more, nothing less.

Surely you either watch it if you are interested or carry on as normal if you're not? There almost seems to be a sense of having to arrange something alternative on purpose going on here.

FWIW, we are meeting friends to do something outdoors and potentially very messy for most of the day. The evening will be cleaning ourselves, cleaning kit and eating. I'm not interested in football but might think to look at my phone at some point.

But perhaps you can’t ’carry on as normal’?
Venues are shutting or will show the match at full blast or friends that you would normally see have bought into the collective madness.

Yep.

BarbedButterfly · 13/07/2024 09:17

We will probably watch a movie as neither of us cares about football

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 13/07/2024 09:19

Buy a nice supermarket pizza or hummus and such so you don't have to deal with the deliveroo wait, and The Bear season 3.

Flumpie59 · 13/07/2024 09:28

I agree! There's business staff and school kids going home early to watch footie!

Absolutely EVERYTHING about it bores me into a coma!

If I had staff and they said they want to go home early to watch footie then I'd say that's absolutely fine .... but I'll delete a portion of their wages for the time they're off! HA!

It's the Olympics in a couple of weeks. Loads of people will watch sporting events they normally wouldn't dream of doing so if there's the possibility of their country winning the gold medal

Sethera · 13/07/2024 09:35

DH and I not interested so I expect we'll watch a film, as we normally do on a Sunday evening.

But - and I can’t stress this strongly enough - it’s only a game. It’s only ‘important’ or ‘history’ because of the hysteria attached to it. Other than perhaps some people getting more famous, the only impact on normal people is that they will (hopefully) feel temporarily excited or sadly some people will be victims of crime or violence as a direct result.

MrsStottlemeyer · 13/07/2024 09:47

I'll be about an hour into a four hour journey home with DH and two DC They are huge football fans but are not England fans so will be willing England to lose.
I will hopefully find a good book to listen to because football on the car radio unlocks an intense rage in me.

LadyPenelope68 · 13/07/2024 09:48

I’ll be in bed with a glass of wine and a book, not interested whatsoever. Husband and 2 teenage sons not interested either, so a football free zone.

think it’s ridiculous and way over the top that things are shutting early Sunday, or opening later on Monday. It’s just a football match, they didn’t do that for the Lionesses or the Olympics, or rugby etc, etc.
